A part of dialogue i like to point out is when moomin and snufkin are talking about the hobgoblin in the cave: "Wow! He must really love that ruby." "He wishes to possess it. Theres a difference." And I think that is a very good way to point out how moomins original idea of love was more possesive.

I think Moominmamma recognized Moomin not because she doesn't see him as a grown up but because no matter how old or mature he becomes, she will always see him as her dear baby and that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

I'm so glad that they portrayed Moomintroll's "possessiveness" as an insecurity rather than a servere character flaw. Yes, his jealousy does get out of hand sometimes (making for some quality comedy), but he's such a genuinely good and understanding person that he deeply respects everyone around him and their needs. Moomintroll's always able to fix a problem by simply telling everyone to shut up, listen and show some empathy. He's not toxic or controlling, he's just afraid of letting go lest he be forgotten, kind of like his crush- I mean... best friend! :D

I don't know whether or not someone else has already figured this out (there probably is-), but, you know that scene where Snufkin looks into his campfire all thoughtful and stuff, and he says "Moomintroll...where are you?"? It parallels that one scene from The Spring Tune, where Moomintroll is looking out of his bedroom window, waiting for Snufkin to arrive, and says "...Where are you?".

I was waiting for the next Moomin analysis, and I am not disappointed. 😌 I feel like a good portion of the fandom seem to dislike this season immensely due to certain changes to the story or how characters are portrayed, which is fair, but I think this causes people to have a very narrow view of this adaptation. Moominvalley is different in a lot of ways from its previous adaptations and it's tackling the story of the Moomins in a slightly different way, which I personally love! I like seeing Moomintroll learn how to come into his own, how to love selflessly and become the person he wants to be. It's such a wonderful thing, especially because so many people struggle with the question of identity that it feels good to someone find themselves. (It's even better when you look at the queer undertones of the show, which again, is something people struggle with)

I get why some would be upset over the changes, but with every installment it becomes clear to me that the writers of this show actually love the moomins and want to do a good job! The way in which they create their own canon is very respectful and still remains true to the source material.

The creative team has demonstrated time and time again how much they love the Moomins and have so far been respectful of the original source material! And, I like that they've branched out from the original source and created their own things too! Also, I should clarify that people are free to dislike Moominvalley! It's perfectly understandable! However, the problem comes from expecting Moominvalley to be /exactly/ like its predecessors and being angry that it isn't! The show is its own thing and should be treated as such!

(This is something she once explicitly explained by the way!) You could argue the theme of "identity" and finding one's place in the world could be direct inferences to queer people finding their identities and their place in the world. I don't have time to explain further, but the show doesn't make it a secret. 😅

Honestly, i was very salty about season 2. I didn't like it at first because of the change in tone, mostly to Moomintroll. He is very different from the Moomin i had familiarize myself with. He came off as *too* angsty and it kinda irked me to say the least. But seeing it from your perspective gives me new light to his character and he is more than what meets the eye (at least for me) and I'm glad i can let go of that dislike i once had for the season. In fact, when I saw this season and especially the lighthouse episodes, I began to develop a theory of how the Seahorses represent the acceptance of a new environment as the Moomin tries to start a new life on the lighthouse island. As Moomin Troll develops an obsession with seahorses, he kind of tries to find a new love and a new starting point for a new life to which he has a hard time adjusting. While Groke is more representative of the Moomin Troll’s past and old life in the Moomin Valley, which returns to haunt him now as he tries to get over it. But when the Moomin finally decides to face Groke, he will finally leave the past behind and accept his new life. This is a bit of a loose theory, of course, but it’s still been spinning in my head for a while.

He reaches out for her, but this is when the groke appears. Ok but if Snufkin is like home to Moomin then why oh why didn’t he leave him a note explaining where he went, or at least a goodbye letter, or something? It’s like his longing stopped completely after the episode where Snufkin left. is it that he’s realized their friendship seems rather one sided so he decided not to think of him anymore? I mean, he did tell Moomin that “a year goes by so quickly” as if he wouldn’t miss him when Moomin’s always practically counting the minutes waiting for him to come back (not to mention that he left right after telling him that a scary evil wizard could be coming for him, which was a bit of a dick move tbh...)

In november in moominvalley, snufkin amd moomintrolls roles are almost reversed. Snufkin stays in moominvalley and waits for moomin to come back, and he misses him just as much as moomin misses snufkin in the winter. Snufkin experiences what its like to be in moomintrolls point of view, eventually learning that even when he leaves, it doesnt mean other peoples lives stop to wait for him. And moomin also learns what its like to be in snufkins point of view. Still missing snufkin, but off on his own adventure. I think moomintroll not leaving snufkin a note sort of symnolizes how snufkin learns that peoples lives wont go on hold for snufkin when he leaves.

@@DrawpinionDump I love the glittery texture! Also, I rewatched "Night of the Groke" today and noticed something very interesting. Moomintroll first encounters the Groke on the bridge. The bridge where he meets with Snufkin. When I was watching the scene I couldn't help but think of your analysis describing the Groke as a reflection of Moomintroll's own clingy nature and the visual of her coming across the bridge with her arms outstretched felt too similar to Moomintroll waiting for Snufkin to be coincidental. So uh, very clever animation parallels there I think.

I’m actually always afraid of losing my friends. Not because I don’t trust them. I’m 17, bad at communication and contact trough phone and all that, I stay in home doing work instead of going out with friends (even before quarantine). I have already lost two friendships due to this, they weren’t harsh break ups, we just, faded away from each other’s life. Even my mother is worried. But I cannot help but think they will find better friends, and live happier without me. Oh god. I’m gonna die alone 7 feet under my artworks. Oh yeah, the show. Maybe Snufkin is distant because of this, even though he is moomins best friend, he doesn’t see himself as an essential in his life, after all he is a wanderer, he is probably used to leaving friendships behind while following his passion, maybe even thinking it will be better for them.

I thought alot about why the groke may have stopped the hunt for the ruby when it shattered, like the groke did only start to appear when moomin found out it was in the suitcase and started to get scared because of the presence of the hobgoblin that also made snufkin leave earlier (tho this cant really explain why she had wanted the ruby in the first place, maybe moomin thought that if the groke had it, the hobgoblin would just follow her away from moominvalley forever). And as the ruby shattered there wasnt really a purpose for the want as the fear for the hobgoblin did vanish with the ruby not existing anymore. Maybe this is a really simple theory that may be loose on some edges, but i think there still is some truth in it

Awesome video as always! It's really great writing on the crews part to be able to reign in the more fantastical elements of the story. As much as some might complain about portrayals and arcs the characters take its important to note they're still here watching the show. It's good writing that is focused on characters and interactions to form a coherent arc, things are being set up for season three that should be interesting. Snufkin may need to break out if his own mind and really talk with Moomin on what they mean to each other, because he was hurting that whole last episode and he needs to address it with calm unlike with Tiki Woo. It's going to be interesting to see if Snufkin can grow into a more open and caring person, and if Moomin will forgo hibernation to travel with Snufkin to embrace adventure. Either way it'll be a treat to watch your videos as it all shake out, thank you for your hard work!

No dislikes so far, nice~ I was also waiting for this video and I'm satisfied with its lenght and with the topics you decided to discuss in it (no mention of seahorses, tho? I guess you saved them for another time, maybe? :) I found this thread a bit funny, though it's also an interesting part of this season. It also shows how Moomin tries to cope with new reality and find happiness in a place, he was in some way forced to live in. Also the fact, that he so quickly started to flirt with seahorses, even thought he broke up with Snorkmaiden not so far ago? He still has some strugles with distinguishing friendship from deeper feelings afterall... :)). I already watched this video yesterday, but I guess I'll watch it once more~ Also can't wait for next analisys, with Snufkin's point of view ^^

They're so on-point and comforting~♫ there's so much writing that I miss in the series in terms of parallels and story that I turn to this channel for so much better understanding!! ;u; (Although a lot of the original LGBTQ narratives have been lost this series, I'm kind of glad in a way that they're making it more broad in terms of personal identity / overcoming fear of not feeling loved; ............I just hope in S3 they introduce the narratives back, cuz otherwise what was all the pining in S1 for?????? ) Gnnnnn anyway I just love these vids thank you sm!!!!!

I'm glad I'm able to shine some light upon this wonderful series! I kinda wish the show would go more into the LGBTQ+ stuff too, but at the same I wonder if I'm not the one who's projecting too much into these characters... I mean, Tove's writing has undeniable LGBT undertones, but every time Snufkin leaves in the Moominvalley series my little gay heart breaks, so I guess they must be doing a good job!
