I said it from the beginning. People saw the name "Omega" and "260 dollars" and their brains shut down.I was seeing people on KZbin who had reviewed hundreds of watches and and broken down every detail good and bad to let folks know whether it was worth parting with their hard earned cash and some were practically fawning over these things. I was beginning to wonder if the Swatch Group had spiked the water supply 🤣🤣

I like your content, you don’t suffer fools. At a very young age you are already aware of how stuff works you got it right about the marketing expectations of the Swatch group of having non watch enthusiasts going into their stores (getting traffic in) and having a percentage of these customers become clients again. You are not saying that that is bad per se, but probably they could have done it with a watch that was a tad better built.

Agree completely. I was in London so visited the Swatch shop (which was deserted, by the way). Asked if they had a Moonswatch. They didn’t. I left. I didn’t hang around and browse, buy another watch instead. Just creating pissed off customers and tainting both brands with the poor build quality and lack of supply. Even if you bought one, it’s not a gateway to buying a real speed master. It’s like those people who buy fake / homage watches. They aren’t in the market for a real Rolex, but by buying a homage Rolex it just makes everyone think that someone with a real Rolex must be wearing a fake. Imagine if you were wearing a real Speed master and someone came up to you and said, ‘oh wow, is that a moon swatch?’. You say, ‘no, it’s a real Omega.’ They would say, ‘oh well, never mind.’ 🙄🤣

People keep saying how the moonswatch is a shit watch and overpriced. But I have to wonder how many of those same people would go out and buy one if they became available online. I can tell you that the few that are become available in swatch stores get snatched up like crazy. Also the price that you pay is based off hype not the quality of the watch. Look at the submariner selling at 14k or the nautilus 5711 that was selling at 100k at one point. Those are great watches but vastly over valued because of the marketing and hype. We can have hundreds of people making video about why a certain product sucks, but money speaks louder.

While I do agree that the Moonswatch is a bit overpriced, I respectfully disagree with some of the points you made. I was fortunate enough to buy 4 moonswatches and I haven’t encountered any issues that a lot of people have. Allow me to elaborate; First of all, only one colorway is bleeding (the blue one) and they have been working on resolving that issue. Secondly, I don’t think that the release has cheapened the Omega Brand name. I do understand that many watch enthusiasts might say that but outside of our bubble, a ton of new people were introduced to the Speedmaster Design. Many people that I know said that they would like to get the real deal in the future. Omega and Swatch were all over the news where I live. In the end, people either like it or hate it. I happen to like the watch but I hate how the whole collaborations was released and advertised. Anyways, great content - keep up the good work 👍🏻

I completely agree with you. I think it also casts an unpleasing light on the whole conglomerate situation in the watch industry. The release of the moon swatch showed a broader public in an unfavorabble way that Omega is a brand owned by the Swatch group and that they obviously can do with the Omega brand whatever they like, for better or for worse. I think that confuses future Omega buyers and may even make them stay away from the brand as a whole...

Yes, I agree 100% with you. I don't live near a Swatch store so buying online was my only option to acquire a MoonSwatch (By the way, living near a Swatch store doesn't mean you will find one). Last week I was browsing Amazon and I found this Pagani Design 1701 watch. It has a Seiko VK63 movement which in my opinion is better, and it's made of steel instead of plastic (Bioceramic). For $260 I could buy two PD and still have some change for coffee. Just to be clear, I like the MoonSwatch, but I don't think it's worth for that price and for the hassle to find one.

You could not have said it any better, the Moonswatch has somehow degraded the initial brand image of Omega, obviously beneficial to Swatch, but most definitely not to Omega. The least they could have done is get the significant quality issues right. Regardless if we like Rolex or not, I just can't see them make such a venture.

Liz I live/love watches! I love hunting for them. I love women who love watches! I had a 1950s Omega Seamaster 300 at one time. I was young and didn't wear it much so I sold it for $750!!! Yes I kick myself everytime I think about it. I love your mind and knowledge about the industry and I've learned alot from you and I've been collecting watches for 40 years. I thought about getting one when they were announced. Lucky for me I noticed that with the different and higher positioned sub registers it looked more like suffering from a serious case of constipation rather then a Speedmaster clone. Therefore by the time Swatch announced that they will not honor their previous communications about offering it as an online purchase I was way past the stage where I wanted one and was considering more interesting options, such as starting up a broccoli farm or painting my living room with the cat.

Maybe if the MoonSwatch was $125 like their regular (non-Irony) chronos, people would feel better about it. Clearly the Swatch group has determined the Omega collaboration part is worth and extra $135. That's definitely up for debate. Mine hasn't broken like Adrian's, but I don't wear it every single day. It feels like a Swatch, and I treat it like a fun non-primary watch. When I was at Watches of Switzerland (trying on the real Moonwatch), the sales guy said they got a ton of calls from people asking if THEY had the MoonSwatch. 🙄The marketers win though, because per Bloomberg "The Speedmaster Moonwatch model, which retails for about $7,000 and is lionized for being the first watch worn on the moon, increased sales in Omega stores by more than 50% since the launch of the $250 MoonSwatch in March, Swatch Group AG CEO Nick Hayek said in an interview at the company’s headquarters in Biel, Switzerland." 50%!! I would not have even expected that much.

Speedmasters have gone up in value in the last year, but have also started declining with the rest of the high end watch market. The sapphire version is going for $1K less than retail. They were readily available (new) in the AD I went into recently.

Swatch is always a throw away watch though. To get a $5000 watch of any make serviced is $150 service fee. Completely dissasembled, parts washer, buff slight scratches, polished crystal, beat errors adressed to near new condition or better depending on the watch maker, you retain the value you paid for the quality watch you paid for. This abomination 'Moon Swatch' is not servicable. Much like most Swatches, when it's done and broken, you don't take a $100 Swatch in for $150 service. The Moon Swatch is sealed, plastic window is welded to the plastic case. I watched a video where the watchmaker cut the case open to reveal a movement with plates welded together, no screws and certainly bot manufactured....We've seen watch manufacturing like this in China where they roll out 1000 watches a day at $20 - $30 in any Mall Watch Kiosk. This was all hype a fake shortage when there is probably 20,000 of these bot manufactured plastic watches that fall apart in a wharehouse. They will be sold eventually on a reduced rack for maybe $79.99 or even on QVC for a low low price $29.

I didn't mind the original concept. In no way did I feel like it cheapened the value of my Omega - I figured it was just a fun cheeky crossover. But I HATE that it became in store only and that it was so unavailable that the grey market made a killing on it. I remember the queues of people outside Swatch desperate to get their hands on a plastic toy watch. Jumping through hoops and an absurd grey market mark-up are the exact reasons I can't stand Rolex. I'm sick in my own mouth every time I see one on someone's wrist (both the Moonswatch and a Rolex) - my thoughts are always "You either had to empty your wallet or burn your dignity? Which was it?"

I realise this is an older video but I can’t help thinking that most YT watch channels don’t place enough importance on the collectability aspect of this omega x swatch collab. The hunt for each type, the choice of various colours and styles, the space travel theme, the definitive number of each type in the collection, an omega collaboration etc are all factors that speak directly to their collectability. They’re incredibly fun, well priced for collectors, enthusiasts and people who just want “in” on the craze, and offer everyone some achievable challenge to collect. I think they’re great because of all these aspects. They’re not without fault obviously, but they’re super fun for what they are.

IMO, Swatch group making this watch is tantamount to an investor selling a valuable growth stock to have available cash; they mined their valuable property to take some profit. Mission accomplished, but now their portfolio is worth a little less. On the other hand, it did show that there's serious recognition for the Omega brand. You'd never see hype like that for a Swatch without an Ω on the dial. That said, it's a crap watch and I'd never consider owning one.

I recently bought a Tissot Memphis Heritage that can be purchased for the same price at the Moonswatch. Tissot is also part of the Swatch group and I like the look of Swatch but am always put off by a lack of sapphire crystal. Well, the Memphis looks like a Swatch - it is funky looking but is built much better Tissot quality but a Swatch look for under $225-$290 depending on where you buy and it comes with two straps. The Moonswatch is a gimmick (an expensive gimmick at that) that sullies the Omega brand. I went to an AD here in HK and looked at a Speedmaster and he even said - well you could go over to Swatch and get it for $250. But then I grew up when 4 cyl Mustangs were gutless wonders - they had the look of a muscle car but with no actual muscle. The sad thing is that for $100 less money - these folks could get something like the Orient Bambino which is hugely stylish for the money - an actual in-house Japanese-made automatic that people have owned for decades (revealing the movement is pretty good). Or this plastic pile of junk for $100 more?

The only thing I can see from this is the steam rising from a truck load of manure. This is a hyped plastic watch that will soon find its way to the back of a drawer. It is not an Omega, and I willing to bet Omega had nothing to do with this watch except disdain. Swatch completely bungle the marketing. I would not drive more than 10 miles and wait 10 minutes to purchase this peice. By the time Swatch realizes this hundreds of thousands of fakes will hid the market and squash the desirers of those who fall for this fiasco. ( They probably will be as good quality . LOL)

The Moonswatch stole the show at Watches and Wonder's and that to me is hilarious. No one anticipated its release and the attention it would get. Do I like the Moonswatch? no lol. I also think it's overpriced. I have a Omega Speedy racing, so probably biased. The general public are not aware of the quality difference between a real Omega and a Swatch with Omega branding on it. They may think all Omega watches are made this way, it's damaging to the brand with regards to quality. Don't waste your money folks.

I've owned omega's (including the Hesalite Moonwatch in the past) and numerous swatches, but do question the quality and high price tag compared to other swatches. Other swatches are better quality, I wouldn't buy one, but each to their own.

I own two Hamiltons. One Khaki Auto and another Khaki auto Xwind. I know that Swatch now owns hamilton and have sold both of those watches because of this Swatch debacle. Not only will I never look at a Swatch again, I will never by another "Swiss" watch ever again.

Thank you very much! Think so, too, the most obvious is also the most probable here. Never will I ever buy a moonswatch. Shady concept, crappy outcome, and I'm frightened what they'll bring next. But here we are, ntl we are going to be disappointed in the order that Swatch Group sets out ;) And if you really wanted a decent swatch chrono, I would recommend their very first line - still got that "Wall Street" Chrono from 1990, 22 jewels, still an accurate pleasure :)

Well I guess I'd like one as a piece of plastic history, a watch that caused a national news story when launched. Will I travel a long distance specifically to get one? No I won't, nor will I pay over premium on the grey market. I'm not that bothered really but if one popped up at a Swatch shop if I was in the area I 'might' get one but I doubt it would get much wrist time due to the fragile materials. Second thoughts I might just go for a 51 instead and put some gas in the car. Thanks for sharing.

It's not that bad. The quality is on par with swatch in general and the accuracy is way way better than Omega mechanical watches so I'd say is pretty good. It this was bad then Omegas would be much worse given the lack of accuracy and a much higher price point

Dont forget that Swatch really HAS Competition in Switzerland: Hanowa, Mondaine, Chrono AG, Victorinox (and more). They offer affordable and better watches than Swatch. For example, the "Drive 42" for ~160 Euro, a Quarz Chronograph with Stainless Steel Case, hardened mineral Crystal and 10ATM.

I fully believe this watch will be in their online store soon, why? Because their goal was to open more swatch stores worldwide but now the market is flattening and the writing is on the wall that a recession and a pretty awful one is right around the corner. They'd be stupid to keep only selling these in their stores only when you need money saved up to survive the next few years. I personally would never buy one, I'd rather have mechanical chronograph using a seagull movement and some food at that price but the hype is still alive for the happy meal toy and people still want it... I need to stop writing comments around dinner time.

Thanks El for your insights into this watch, Swatch Group and the greater Swiss watch biz. As a long time affordable Casio, Seiko and lately Garmin & Citizen collector, the Swiss manufacturers' value proposition is difficult for me to appreciate. I was excited to see an affordable Swiss quartz chrono with a updated classic design (love the new MoonSwatch sub-dial layout) and a aerospace theme. I was disappointed in the reported quality and unavailability of this watch, so it didn't tempt me to try it out maybe the next Swatch-O-Mega?

Hi Elizabeth! You and I chatted on Instagram yet yesterday. You bring up a lot of good points. I think the academic discussion of whether or not this was a good idea or concept is debatable, but there is no debating that the execution here went off the rails. I don’t necessarily blame them for underestimating demand because that’s a really hard thing to do. But it didn’t make sense to me to go back on the promise that they would be available online. Who knows… Maybe at some point they will be. and maybe some of the quality missteps will be improved as well. I hope so because even though I’m not really a moon watch guy, I’d probably pick up one of these to wear when we go to the pool at the club.

They've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory or where I come from They've " pissed on their chips"! My view was originally like yours in that They've diminished the lure of Omega. Then I listened to Adrian and few others and was won around because of the brilliant marketing. Great concept, but, dreadful execution in distribution and clearly quality of the actual product. Kudos to Adrian though for admitting its " junk" a rare quality to admit you're wrong these days.

Unfortunately there are those who've bought the MS who actually believe they have the real thing. I actually tangled with one who was adamant that his MS was every inch the real thing as my actual Speedmaster. There was no reasoning with the guy, who's only way of gaining the high ground was to accuse me of sour grapes. I know it's wrong to make generalisations in the context of an isolated experience, however I am convinced that there are a lot of owners of these things who think people like me are mugs for spending 1000's on a speedmaster when you can get the same watch for a tiny fraction of the price. You were saying, about damaging the image of the brand?

How would you even get in an argument with someone claiming a plasitc quartz watch is the same as a steel mechanical watch? Anyhow - Omega sells 20% more Moon watches now after the Moonswatch release, they are flying off the shelves at my AD. So - it did work. He said since the release of the Moonswatch the Speedmaster sells like crazy.

It's a SWATCH, co-branded, but still a SWATCH. I have a Sistem 51 I really like, but this new plastic fantastic bio-ceramic trash has really hurt the SWATCH brand. They have made great watches before. It's a shame they shot themselves in the foot with this co-branding debacle.

I still can’t believe the executives at Omega agreed to attach their name to a plastic swatch watch. I’m selling my omega Seamaster and my omega moon watch and I’m buying a Rolex.

The only argument that is relevant to me is that Swatch LIED to their customers when they said the MoonSwitch would not be a limited edition and would be available online. They are assholes and should be avoided at all costs. Case closed.

I respectfully disagree. You can still see people going very early to my near Swatch Store to get the Moonswatch and they are gone before noon. So that make me think that this has not damaged Swatch or Omega. It continues to be a magnet to the swatch store because for the people it is a collaboration Omega/Swatch and the hype is still there, not showing any sign of disappear in the near future. Why do people still go early in the morning looking for this particular watch? Perhaps because of the model it reminds? And before saying they do not have the same quality, what is the percentage of defective vs good products. it is really more, less or equal to the rest of the swatch production? We do not know. I bought once one swatch I liked and, after a week it stopped working. I brought it to the store; I received a new one and it worked like a charm. I do not know if they corrected the blue stain, but it seems that does not matter, since the watch continue to be successful and sold out, and I am sure that the Omega logo and the model it reproduces, have a lot to do with it. By the way, both my daughters have theirs and they work perfectly, but they prefer to wear them with Barton straps, and they look excellent. And that would be my critique: simple and comfortable silicone, with matching colours would have been better. Thanks for your great videos. the production and content are excellent. Cheers.

The moonswatch being a undeniably shitty watch is a problem. But it's initial proposition - a swatch dressed up as a speedy - did wonders for speedy value. I love my speedy, and in no way does a bungled MS-release cheapen anything for me. Obviously, I'm not gonna buy a MS now, but if they get it right quality wise, I'll get a couple for sure: If they follow up with a V2-release, there will be hype all over again, because letting people in to the speedy family for fun prices was a great idea to begin with. You're right - It's not the same as Tudor and Rolex, it's something else entirely. It's allowing streaming of Hamilton VS tickets for the Broadway production. It's saying: you don't have to be in the 1% to enjoy this story. The fact that it's currently the worst quality stream known to man is a pity, but an issue waiting to be resolved before it's going to become a long line of cool swatches with the iconic speedy shape. Powder coated metal parts, a harder crystal and shell and the same great branding equals a money making machine.

Amen, Elizabeth! It is a disposable, poorly made, overpriced piece of junk. It does look good, however. What bothers me the most (and a LOT bothers me about this toy watch) are the comments by Nick Hayek (Swatch Group CEO). He had the nerve to say "It's a carefully produced Swiss Made watch and not a commodity". I call major BS on the entire hype machine. This debacle has turned me off to both Omega and Swatch.

Anyone supporting the Moonswatch is doing so because it's better to fake happiness over the "joys of the community and kumbayah watch circle jerk" than to admit they were had by sneaky marketing hype and a horrible product. Just an opinion of course.

From the watch nerd camp, it totally destroyed my desire for the actual speedmaster pro. For a newcomer to watches, it surely destroys your faith in omega and swatch due to the poor quality. Also a fan of Adrian's but I'm with you on this one for sure. Waste of $260
