I very much used to think that!! However in hindsight, having met my mother inlaws in my youth and nearing 50 now and having a broader perspective, I lean towards - they labelled their mothers as domineering and controlling but they were just being good mothers and the toxic individuals took offense over stupid things, played the victim so I could become their next supply, didn't understand love or positive parenting and needed someone to blame instead of taking accountability. They just need someone to blame. Anyone.
