Josephus was a Jewish priest. He was requested to be a leader in the revolt, but declined, because he forsaw that the revolt wouldn't stand a chance. It hardly took a Nostradamus to predict that. In the end he was morally blackmailed to do it anyway and he did, out of sense of duty and solidarity. The revolt failed, and Josephus was captured by the Romans. He was enslaved but because he was an intellectual got access to Vespasian and befriended him. He wrote his book in order to justify his involvement in the revolt. Hardly the kind of person that would invent Christianity. Compared to this theory, the "Paul McCartney is dead" thing is a pinnacle of logic.

Or "The christian sources would be biased though" They dont stop to consider they're asking for a paradox. If a non-believer says "i saw Jesus rise from the dead!" They're not a non-believer anymore, are they? Lol the closest example to what they're asking for is the apostle Paul, who was a pharasee who converted after seeing Jesus, but an atheist would still consider that a christian source for the same reason. His records would become part of the Bible too to begin with. It's frankly frustrating tho how dishonest some atheists are about this point. It's like demanding "name an atheist who believes in God!"💀😅😂 Their replies also imply that if someone's biased, their sources are untrustworthy, which is a flawed claim, as it ignores all the bias an atheist would have too, from a bias for naturalist philosophy, to bias in favor of individualistic desire, etc, as if that bias doesnt impact they're conclusions. Everyone has some level of 'bias', so it's an odd assertion that a bias should invalidate a point completely

I used to stop celebrating Christmas because it was created to compete against a pagan holiday, because it became more secular than holy in the culture and also because of the fact that we don't know when Jesus was actually born. Last time I did, I was a little boy. I'm not willing to be one of those conspiracy theorists christians because most of them are kinda ignorant and arrogant. In fact, I stopped celebrating any other holiday too,.but the reason for that is that I don't think there's such thing like a 'special day'. The only thing that remained was the Pentecost day, but even for that, I just contend myself of partaking in the sunday worship. Two christian evangelists (I dont know his denomination, maybe catholic) tried to talk to me about some Christmas Church event but I was so distracted that I just said "I don't celebrate Christmas". And they said "Why?" while being stunned. And I didn't know what to say, so I basically just used the fact that I'm doing health studies as an excuse. I still wish them blessings as they were bold enough to stop me on the street to talk about Jesus in some sort of way. One of the friends I met, who did celebrate Christmas but only culturally because he was a non-believer in school was kinda shocked that I didn't celebrated Christmas at all while it being a christian holiday. For now, Christmas for me is just a yearly sale period with bunch of hypocrites pretending to do good the next year. But I admit it reunites family, which is honorable. The only time I do something significant on the 25th December is if my aunt actually calls me for a family dinner. I spend time with them because I'm not a religious jerk who thinks that partaking with family is wicked just because Christmas is 'pagan'. Should I celebrate Christmas again ?

It's crazy to me that some people work so hard to try to disprove God and/or Christianity. It is futile to attempt it. But what is their goal? No one needs to renounce that which has not been demonstrated to exist; i.e., a god or gods. Simply remaining unconvinced, as theism is not epistemically justified and is irrational, is the most honest position to hold. It's commonly referred to as having a good epistemology.

@@nonprogrediestregredi1711 You can hold that position without making documentaries trying to convince people that your view is the correct one. They have every right to make the documentaries and be unconvinced apologists for their cause. I just wonder what their goal is. For Trent's podcast, for example, I can see that his goal is to convince people that Christianity is true with the goal of drawing people closer closer to God and Heaven. Lastly, I would say it's only an opinion that God has not been demonstrated to exist. There have been countless miracles, apparitions, conversions, etc. over the history of Judaism and Christianity. You can choose to believe that in all cases, there are scientific explanations we don't know of yet, that people are lying, and that conversion is just a reprogramming of the brain rather and a reinvigoration of the soul. Lastly, the fact that anything exists violates the law of conservation of mass. And the universe clearly runs on mathematical rules that are highly unlikely to be random. Some people bring up the eternal universe theory when I talk about this; but that makes less sense than intelligent design when using logic.

The Cult of Dionysus is what you’re asking for - Dionysus, according to tradition, was the son of a God (Zeus) who was born of a human female, who’s first signature miracle was related to wine, who had a discipleship of a dozen humans (they were females instead of males but still disciples) who was persecuted by the governing authorities for his claim, who referred to himself as “the vine”, etc, etc. I would recommend The Immortality Key by Brian Muraresku, which goes over dozens of examples of Parallels between the two figures. It also touches on the Greek language and how the Gospel of John uses phrases verbatim that were found in The Bacchae, when describing Dionysus’ story.

Except it is done in a way to say this is the true God where the other is a counterfeit. For instance, the prophetic writings of Daniel describing a vision of the Mesiah coming as the Son of Man on the clouds (the cloud rider), referencing the second coming. Baal was known as the god who controlled the weather and this was done on purpose, but this isn’t meant as a copy. It’s saying you think Baal controls the weather? Think again, the Messiah ride in on them. Especially important to remember that Baal was morally evil compared to the Jewish God and a distinction needed to be made to the people at the time who worshiped multiple gods. I could see this being very similar comparison between Dionysus and Jesus who promoted almost a complete different lifestyle from each other. Also the idea of the God Man is actually very much hinted at in Jewish writings prior to the gospels. I need to read more in depth from the examples you gave, but my guess is those authors don’t go into the actual links to OT context but maybe I am wrong. Appreciate the post though, like to read more about how people interpret these things.

@@DanV65 The problem with your comment is the fact that 500 people in no way claimed to see him after he was crucified, instead a single person (Paul) claimed 500 people witnessed him (some 20 years after the fact as well). A single person who wasn't an eyewitness themselves mind you. "all of his disciples that were tortured and brutally murdered proclaiming it." We don't actually know that more than maybe one disciple actually died in any way as a result of not denouncing their faith. Also, just because somebody dies for their beliefs does it make those beliefs true?
@DanV656 күн бұрын
@ your argument doesn’t make very much sense. Considering you’re saying that a man making these claims 20 years after they happened is less believable to you than you saying they didn’t over 2000 years after they happened. A lie that’s lives on for 2000 years and believed by 2.4 billion people today doesn’t seem very likely. I can’t think of a lie in history to be that successful my friend. And hey in the end If I chose to follow this faith and live my life by it. I lived a life of love, selflessness, and hope for the future, never fearing death and living a good life. If that’s the consequences for being wrong, I’d be okay with that 👍.

The more you deal with the apologetic more you realize the evidence and well rounded defensive capability of the christian religious ideas that vastly outstrip any other religion you know on planet earth. If humans were capable of creating something like that they would not have been the abyssal failure of specious that repeats mistakes after mistakes be it be their rulers after rulers and civilizations after civilizations.

“Christianity worked within Roman rule to change Rome from within”. That is exceptional commentary. So why didn’t the Papacy remain within the Body of Christ and change it from within having this example from History? The Apostles did it among themselves when confronting first century controversy. St. Maximos endured mutilation by the Church to keep the Church from continuing in Heresy. The Popes excommunicated, unilaterally rebuked after the fact Councils it originally accepted fully and freely and finally Sacked Constantinople in 1204 the plunder of which decorates Rome and Venice to this very day.

We don't have the original of ~any~ text that old, aside from stone inscriptions and a few letters. That's an unreasonable expectation. The passage in John about the dead coming out of their tombs is rather ambiguous. I'm inclined to think of it as hyperbole, to which John seems more inclined than the other Gospel writers. If it did literally happen, it may be that they were only ghosts or apparitions, or that they ascended into heaven. For secular sources regarding the crucifixion of Christ, see Josephus and Tacitus. (Neither of them believed in His resurrection, of course - if they had, they'd have become Christian and I wouldn't be able to call them "secular sources.")

@swebilbo God's words have been entrusted to the church for preservation. The Bible is only a tool to that end. There are no historical accounts of Odin. All we have written of him was written by European Christians, trying to recall what it was their pagan great-grandparents believed. Can you tell me in what town or year Odin was born? Do you have any direct quotes from him? Any eyewitness accounts from people who knew him on Earth? Odin is no more substantial than a puff of wind.
