@Dreamcaster1112 жыл бұрын
I never knew there were two versions of everyone in ST. That's pretty neat.
@max-d81052 жыл бұрын
Yep. The reason they're called "old" versions is because they are based on their appearance in Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers, the predecessor to SSF2 Turbo (this game). That's why they don't have a super meter; original SSF2 doesn't have super moves. A lot of characters in "Super Turbo" got some new moves and reworks to their frame data to help them be more competitive. That's why a lot of the old characters are considered inferior to their "new" counterparts. However there are exceptions like O.Sagat, who was really good in vanilla SSF2 and got nerfed in ST. O.Sagat is considered the strongest legal character in the game (Akuma is not legal) so some tournaments will softban him, meaning he's allowed but discouraged to use.
@megavolt672 жыл бұрын
@@max-d8105 Isn't Claw/Vega the strongest legal character when played at the highest level (i.e. by Japanese players)? I guess they're one and two either way.
@max-d81052 жыл бұрын
@@megavolt67 technically yea since japan softbans O.Sagat. Claw is really strong but he needs that knockdown in order to start the vortex. He's like a better functioning grappler since Gief and Hawk have the same KD game plan but not quite as strong. The difference between Claw and O.Sagat is that Claw has more favorable matchups while O.Sagat has more advantageous ones.

It's a jank side effect of initial release. Prior to Super 2 Zangief had no whiff animation for his command grab so he could pretty much do the same thing with SPD, but Zangief is also super slow with a bad jump so he had to work much harder to get in because he had no moves that helped him approach. It wasn't until Super 2 Turbo that Zangief got the Banishing Flat (AKA, Green Hand,) that he got a move with good forward momentum to help his SPD setups. T.Hawk had all that right out of the box and with much better maneuverability.

I'm glad you mentioned that grabs cannot be jumped out of in your video as opposed to rooflemonger's. Your video covers thawk in ST a lot more in depth than his video. I'm glad you pointed out the differences with o hawk vs n hawk as well. Just a note, Zangief could always negative edge SPD up until Super Street Fighter 2 when Thawk came along. Gief's sako ticks were a lot more deadly in earlier SF2 as he had way more range and also a lot safer tick setups. And one final note, yes o hawk is infinitely better than n hawk, HOWEVER, I would argue any true hawk player plays n hawk because of 1 factor, the 720. There's no reason to play hawk unless it's to land that 720. That is pretty much the ONLY reason why someone would want to play thawk. It's not about the damage. It's about style. Nothing more satisfying that doing a walk up 720 with Thawk. Keep churning that butter my friends!

He does have Condor Dive (jump then press all punch buttons simultaneously). It can be very useful at times but can get you in trouble just as easily (can be countered or punished on block with most of the cast). It certainly has its uses though. He does have a super attack, but this is the ST version of the character and not the Super version that is seen in the video; every character has both versions, but it is only Hawk, Sagat, Ken, and Ryu that are really any good. You occasionally see someone play the old versions of Honda or Dhalsim as well. His super is doing a 720 command grab on the ST version of the character.

Heh... I was getting a lot of deja vu getting this video recommended to me lately. "Wait, didn't I already see something like this...?" And it was, indeed, the esteemed Rooflemonger one. I'll gladly vouch for ya given the chance, but it can't hurt to have more than one video covering the intricacies of a character. More notes and video samples to keep in mind, surely.

Cool analysis- had no idea his old version was so different!

O. Hawk is high tier imo. This is a good example of what makes ST so fun. When your character gets into their money zone, they can run the table and win rounds. So many bad situations in this game. Also highlights how important it is to execute your gameplan. For shotos, and especially O.Sagat, you must punish jumps as the point of fireball zoning is to force the opponent into a poor jump. This game is one of the GOATS.

@@ShinAkuma204 What do you mean? Only people thinking thawk is strong are people that don't know how to deal with command throws and bad at zoning.

@@vodkagobalsky I can assure you my zoning is fine. But consider the opposite - people who think OHawk is low tier don't know how to deal with zoning and are bad at command grabs.

Also, old Hawk's dragon punch is better than new Hawk. Also, option select Hawk's SPD with his DP and most characters will get hit out of their reversal.

Honestly came into this video thinking you were on a t hawk bandwagon or something bit heard your explanation and totally understand. Also respect your sincerity to even link rooflemongers video too wow. You don't see that kinda stuff in cod videos

Rather than it being inescapable, can't it be escaped by the opponent performing their own single-frame throw? So instead of Ryu dragon punching, he throws? Or is part of what makes this so hard you have to do it outside of their throw range?
@doutsida67152 жыл бұрын
It's not possible. I think it's because command throws have "unthrowable" frames or because Ryu's block stun avoid him throwing at the same frame as T. Hawk, but I'm not sure. What I'm sure is normal throws won't work here. You made me wonder: can a command throw be used to counter this?
