This gives me a different view of the girls bar situation. I had compartmentalized it as pure post-yakuza grift to prey on lonely alcoholic men, but the idea of parlaying it into thirty bucks to get an hour of tipsy Japanese conversation practice with ADHD girls is weirdly reasonable. Pity I don't drink, though. Oh well!

Well ... Yeah. Language immersion is a superior technique for language learning. Though, you'll need way more than 30 minutes and you still should couple it with instruction on grammar and studying vocabulary / grammar. It doesn't have to be a girl's bar though. I mean ... That's going to get expensive.

I ended up homeless for a while the first time I went to Japan. Was in a long term relationship with a japanese woman, and travelled to meet her family in Chiba, before that happened we stayed a few nights in a hotel in the Shiodome disctrict of Tokyo. Ended up having a massive argument over something dumb and we split up. Problem was my flight home wasn't for another week, and the hotel was booked only for another day. Was young and poor at the time, so just ended up wandering around on the streets for 5 days (which suited my overly dramatic frame of mind at the time). Tokyo is not a great place to be if you don't really speak any Japanese, don't know anyone, and don't have money. Hilarious early 20's drama in hindsight.

Honestly, comparing it to a strip club catches the "spirit" of it a bit more I think, or at least sets up the analog. I mean, it's something that doesn't really exist in, say, the states, but it does say something about the culture. Like, it's a whole thing there because, for whatever reason, people *want* that, in the same way that people might want people stripping in front of them. It's a still a *little* bit surprising, most places if you want a conversation you can usually manage at a regular bar if you aren't *too* awkward/anxious, but I guess JP is just built different.
