Thank you Ash for these refreshing tips. It’s precious experience to flag the importance of set posture. To me, the feeling of shoulder postures to start the set up motion is very important.

No problem - thanks for watching. You're absolutely right, posture is SO important. I think everyone gets bored of me saying about posture all the time but it gives the foundation for everything else as you say :)

This is brilliant. I prefer to rest the bow on my leg. I then take a moment to check that my shoulders are down and my core is engaged before I turn my head to the target and raise the bow. Also, before raising, I put a bit of tension on the string. This helps to sit the bow firmly in my hand, and engage my front shoulder. I have tried with the bow on my foot but I have to lean over too far to nock my arrow. I get more economy of movement with it on my leg. I also love this idea of drills to practice pre-shot routine. These can be done in the kitchen or anywhere. Currently I am also practicing clicker control without shooting the arrow - I've put a boss up in my garage for this. Too many archers think that the only way to practice is to shoot Portsmouths again and again, and just hope that the improvements will appear - which they generally don't! Once again, a great video, thanks.

Thanks Peter :) That sounds great, as long as you can get the rest of your shot (which it sounds like you do) then that's the main thing!

LOL, I don't have a center rod so I was never challenged by that setup mistake. Being a new archer,, self coached it's, as you might imagine, quite rewarding to find that I've reached similar conclusions about the set, movement to ready etc. Recurve archers, this man presents solid technique info. Thanx

Very interesting video. I first nock my arrow with the position on the foot and then rest the bow on my leg which is easier to me to keep my posture. Always love the way your videos explain things in a simple way. Thank you.

So to cut a very long story down. Was doing this with barebow and getting on very well. Have moved over to recurve and due to concentrating on getting efficient loading of arrows under a clicker, has meant I have pretty much picked up a load of bad habits. First comp for a long time in Nov, so now have time to correct.

Tall, 70” bow, open stance. Nocking on the foot feels really awkward! I nock the arrow at 45 degree angle, long rod on floor. Set hook, set grip, then flatten the angle of the bow up towards the target (I always think ‘draw hand to the belly button’ as part of my shot routine) then start my draw.

Another useful video Ashe 👍. Personally I nock the arrow with the bow resting on the long rod but then raise the bow so that the bottom limb rests on my right leg. For me the main reason for this is that I shoot with Border HEX limbs that have a greater amount of recurve than "normal" limbs who h makes resting on my foot impossible. I have started shooting a slightly open stance which as you say also makes this easier. Thanks for all the great advice.

Hi Ashe, I have always rested on the long rod which I realise isn't ideal, I have tried resting on my foot but being 6ft 4 it does feel quite awkward as the grip is a too low to even hold in the V

You're definitely right, it's harder for taller people. In this case it might be that having the bow on the leg could help you get this more consistent :)

Is there a variation for compound bows, being a lot shorter?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy
@OnlineArcheryAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
I think making sure to rest the bottom limb on the leg is the best solution for compound, or using a pouch similar to what you see a lot of the top compound archers doing :)

I am tall so on the toe it’s not great. On the leg, my comfort position twists bow. My solution was I bought a rock climbers chalk bag and strap it above my calf angled where I need it. I got idea from my compound/hunting friends who need bow in set position but must wait for extended periods.

I often guilty resting my bow on the long rod. For mocking the arrow. But I try to have the rod on 45degree on the ground during set. Can’t rest on the foot; even with 70” I need to bend too much to hold the bow. Might try resting on the leg.

Is it true that the length of the side rods also affect the set up position? Longer rods means having centre of gravity closer to the handle, thus the limbs on calves position. Shorter rods means having CoG forward from the handle and thus limbs on feet position?
@OnlineArcheryAcademy
@OnlineArcheryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
It's not absolute, and it's still possible to mix and match, but those differences in stabilisation do definitely encourage the different ways of doing the set position. In the extreme example, if you have a VERY heavy bow and it's quite back heavy, the bow on foot position isn't a great choice as the added mass weight makes it much harder to set the two hands at the intermediate position.

@@OnlineArcheryAcademy ahh i see, thanks for the information! Btw, do you know of anybways to prevent the bow shoulder from arching forward when shooting? I have this bad habit of my bow arm traps getting crazy tight when shooting, i try to use the muscles in the lower part of the shoulder but to no avail, any way to solve this?

Seems like I do both, foot and leg I know I rest on the foot (less fatiguing not holding the bow up) and then I hunch over to load the arrow 🤦‍♂️, then raise to the leg to connect with the bow and I end up with the bow pointing off to the right🤦‍♂️ Then raise to setup and have the customary lean back to adjust my posture and shoulders Looks like I've got more to work on👍

@@mortenjacobsen5673 I think my pre-draw merges into the setup and draw itself... There is a definite change of direction from setup but no long hold before I start to draw otherwise it becomes stop/start and I lose direction and fight gravity... I think my pre-draw is a little too far forward but its been working so far, something to look at later

@@OnlineArcheryAcademy thanks for that... The bent wrist 7b/11b I still have issues with along with the direction of the bow... It's only until I raise to setup that I take the tension/bend out of the wrist and then draw back leading from the elbow I can't seem to find a comfortable position for the finger pressure direction and the want to control the bowhand position and direction of the bow and so end up with 10b posture I have a bow side collarbone injury so it feels awkward, I have to set the direction of the bowarm/shoulder positions before I even raise to reduce the risk of repeating injury, I've made some changes and still working on things Thanks for the website and uploaded content 👍

You talk too much and show too little. You talk about how to move, so just show that movement. I can then compare it to a mirror, see from a different perspective. And I won't see the words. 🧐🧐
