Eric I have a question, (see below at the bottom) NASCAR says this format is all about winning yet Kyle Larson, who won 6 races, 2 more than anyone else didn't make the champ 4. So how the heck does this format reward winning, it doesn't. It rewards winning certain races which to me is stupid. The idea of the playoffs is cool, lets copy all the other sports that have a finals to keep the end of the year interesting but it DOES NOT WORK in motorsport if you want to reward the best team. For one none of the other sports (i'm Australian so excuse me if I get stuff wrong) like the NBA and NHL have a WIN X AMOUNT OF GAMES AND YOURE IN, how silly does that concept sound. and to me that's what really breaks this format. Also, you don't have every team playing on the same court, in a final you get team a vs team b, but in motorsport, you may have the 2 finalists (team a and team b) racing against each other but all the other competitors are still out on track. Imagine trying to play an NBA game with 4 teams in 2 separate games but both are taking place on the same court. It's once again stupid. I tried to explain to some friends that if you make the playoffs you still race against everyone else but just arent scored against them and they found it silly, and they just thought it should be the play of people racing and the rest of the teams are done when the regular season is over (if you didn't make the play offs). Which i think makes sense but once again imagine the uproar. All in all this format just DOES NOT REWARD THE BEST DRIVER over the course of the season which motorsport should do and basically, every other sport does (apart from Supercars from next season). Imagine if F1 had a playoff system too, how silly would that look. This format doesn't even reward what it says it rewards, winning. It just rewards the best people in a pre-determined set race which isn't how it should be. And dont even get me started on the Champ 4 being one race, its not like basketball where all the courts are the same, no every track is different in NASCAR so why reward the championship on 1 track. Its just so stupid, you could be great at every track but not a Phoenix and you can't win the championship. Its just so gameafied. Motorsports NEED TO REWARD THE BEST DRIVER OF THAT SEASON, and not play to some stupid antics about making the end of the season more interesting. I watch motorsport to see the best race it out, and unfortunately, this format doesn't allow for that to happen. Anyway, my question is what changes would u make to the playoff format?

@KMHrock892 күн бұрын
It used to be that way, up until 2003 the best driver of the season won the championship. The driver with the most points more often than not was the one with the highest average finish. I understand why NASCAR wanted a change after Matt Kenseth won in 2003 with one win, but he had 25 top 10’s, average finish of 10.3. Between races 2-15, he was outside the top 10 once. He finished outside top 30 a total of 3 times all year, and finished last at Homestead. Some form of playoff format has been with us ever since.

@phsylax Your point about the Playoffs rewarding winning certain races over winning in general is absolutely true. The median champion driver under the 2014-present Playoff system won five races en route to the championship. Under both the full-season 1975-2003 Latford system and the 2004-13 Chase system, the median champion driver won six races. If we took averages rounded to the nearest whole number, these numbers would be seven, six, and five for the Latford, Chase, and Playoff systems respectively. Not only this, we can also look at win percentages. The average win percentage of a championship winning season under the Latford system was 21.28%, compared to 16.39% under the Chase system and 14.95% under the Playoff system. As for changes I would make to the Playoff format, my ideal solution would be to scrap it entirely and create a brand new full season points system where a race win yields a higher percentage of points relative to the 2nd and 10th place finishers (and subsequently everybody else) than the 1975-2003 Latford system. Alas, under the framework provided by NASCAR, I would propose the following: 1) The Championship Four round needs to be three races at three completely different types of race track. I would propose a road course, short track, and intermediate oval, but most combinations of track types would do just fine. That said, absolutely no superspeedways because those races are too much of a lottery to be representative. 2) Get rid of win and you're in. The drivers competing for a championship should be the ones capable of running and finishing up front every week. 3) Eliminate the Round of 16. Nobody sitting 13th or lower in points after 26 or 27 races deserves to compete for a championship. My personal acceptable standard is considerably higher than 13th or lower, but if NASCAR is going to insist on an elimination system, so be it.

The problem is this 1. Joey got into the playoffs with a win at a race with 5 overtimes where all the ones who should have won had to go to pits to get gas. Joey had no business winning that race. 2. He should have been eliminated in the round of 12, he fumbled that round and didn't deserve to go to the round of 8, instead he got 100% completely lucky where Bowman got penalized to where Joey could advance. 3. His average finish for the whole season is like 17th ... that's not championship contending average finishes, not even close. He was a mid pack driver all season but thanks to the playoffs and a few important wins and ALOT of luck, he gets to be a 3 time champion ... No matter how you slice it, Joey shouldn't have been close to the Championship 4. He shouldn't have been in the playoffs, he shouldn't have been in the round of 8 and he shouldn't be a 3 time champion, but it's not his fault, he played the game NASCAR set up and won the prize. Ultimately, NASCARs Championship system is unfair and broken, the Championship in this modern playoff system doesn't matter. Joey maybe a 3 time champion in NASCAR history books but his Championships are not as prestigious and honorable as the other 3 time champions. The fault of that is all on NASCAR for making the worst Championship format in its history. (I would rather have the systems of very early NASCAR than to have this current system, its absolute garbage)

It is important to keep in mind that the Champion is the guy who performed best that season. All of the eras have disadvantages. In 1985, Bill Elliott won 11 races, but did not win the championship. Benny Parsons won his championship without a win. Several seasons had the champion decided with 2 or 3 races left to race. I think one change should be that the regular season champion should earn a final four berth and the remaining three spots settled via the playoffs.

7:18 I disagree with you heavily on this. The reason that football, basketball, and any other sport look different now than they used to is only because of the athleticism seen now in comparison to then. The playoffs for those sports are the EXACT SAME as they’ve been nearly since their inception, and they have stood the test of time because they WORK. They’ve never been touched because they’ve never been broken, even if the two best teams didn’t put up an entertaining. Some championship games end in sweeps. Some end in nail biters. Either way, there’s no question that the two teams that make it are the best teams at that given year, even if the two teams themselves may not be close in performance. NASCAR, however, has changed their format for the sake of entertainment and it wasn’t necessary. Entertainment should not be the driving force behind how a champion is crowned. Ever. Performance has always been and should always be the factor that leads someone to a championship.

Winston changed everything starting in the 1972 season. They instituted a completely new points system that rewarded consistency and required drivers to attempt to compete in all races to be eligible. They reduced the schedule to 36 races from 48-68 races per season. They eliminated all the dirt tracks. And they made running for the championship worth far more money that previously. A lot of drivers and teams (#21 for one) only ran the 11-12 races per year that paid the most. They made the championship prize worth pursuing. So Eric is right that that the 10 3-time champions all competed with different points systems and the record books will just note their championships without any mention of the system in use at the time..

The best team, the best car, and the best driver don't win every sunday. There is a difference between being the best and being deserving and people should be okay with deserving champions. Undeserving would be if Harrison Burton was the only nascar driver alive after a freak accident and won the championship. Someone that wins 5 races in a season is deserving. People can cope and cry all they want. He won the 2nd most races of any driver this season and won when it mattered on multiple occasions.

We need a season long points format to decide champion, no more stage racing, and the final race back at homestead

Joey is a well-deserved third time champion Several of the drivers currently competing with him newer drivers don’t have the experience and maturity and skill. They create a lot of undue adversity, and Joey handled it Eric, you can should’ve could’ve would’ve about the season all you want. It doesn’t change the facts. Joey Logano is the champion and I can’t wait for him to repeat.

1:00 You say the format isn’t for everyone, like there a good chunk of people who like the current format. However, nearly every comment on social media regarding the result of the championship or the format has been negative. I hear from a lot of people that I admire in this industry, that it is good format, “it makes drama and good story lines”, but are you really going to put the integrity of the sport on the line for “good story lines”?! Its amazing how blind some of the media and nearly every NASCAR executive is right now. They dig the hole they are in deeper and deeper, but eventually there isn’t even a ladder long enough to climb out of that hole. We could be looking at the downfall of the sport if we don’t do something quick and something FAST.

Roll a terd around in sugar. And it ain't a sugar cookie or a donut. It's a sugar-coated piece of $h**. No matter who does or or how it's done. Playoffs have sugar coated the terd that NASCAR had become over the last decade or so, and folks like Elton Sawyer are glad to serve it up as dessert. And some youngsters and ignorant noob fans are dumb enough to take a bite and eat it tastes good.😂

Everybody had the same opportunity that Joey did. He worked the system the best. I'm not a fan of Joey's, but you got to give him props. He's in elete company being only the 10th driver to win 3 Championships.

If Cindric didn’t spin at Nashville Logano is probably 20th in points at best. If Logano doesn’t win at Atlanta he might not make it out of the first round. If bowman’s ballast is more secured he’s out in the RO12. If blaney doesn’t push him at Vegas he probably doesnt make the final four. I dont say this against Logano, he played the format fair and square. But this should not ever happen. Ever. (Also rip to KBs streak)

Theoretically all four contenders could crash out and the last one to crash would be champion. Playoff system SUCKS!

@ but 2nd most wins. You would also be a rich man if you got money for every time he had a good car and got wrecked (best car at both Daytona races and spring talledega)
