Bit of behind the scenes ska: According to the Attitude Era Podcast before his match at Wrestlemania 27, Michael Cole was doing his warm-ups at gorilla position and Undertaker came round the corner. Undertaker took one look at Cole in his gear and said, "What the fuck has this business come to?" He then stormed off angrily and was found outside in the arena's parking lot pacing around in an attempt to calm himself down.

I bet Taker was even more livid afterward when Vince decided to give the Cole/Lawler match almost 15 FUCKING MINUTES! It got more time than the World Heavyweight Championship match and Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio. I remember their roster during 2011, and they could’ve done so many other quality matches involving wrestlers who deserved the spotlight of Wrestlemania, instead we got two commentators putting on a clown show for 15 minutes. I understand Vince wanting to let Lawler have his first ever Mania match, so his heart was in the right place in that regard but let him have that match against an actual worker. William Regal won KOTR a few years prior, so start a feud in December between him and Lawler about who the real king is, kind of rehashing the feud he had with Bret in 1993 except now Lawler is the face. Instead he feuds with Michael Cole and doesn’t even win the match. Wrestlemania 27 (and honestly 2011 as a whole for WWE with the exception of CM Punk) was a glaring example of McMahon no longer giving a shit about putting on a show to entertain the fans, as long as he was able to entertain himself, that’s all he cared about. He wrote WWE to appeal to an audience of one. Thank god he’s no longer in charge.

Honestly, Michael Cole isn't that terrible. After watching his old interviews with other wrestlers, and his commentary with Taz & even with Corey. See he had Vince in his ear constantly telling to say pointless shit instead of letting do his thing. Like even Taz have respect for him. However, everyone hated him being wrestler. Sort of a hot take: Michael Cole is an underrated commentator, he has years of journalistic experience to back him up on it, and when Vince isn't yelling in his ear like a maniac, he can deliver some of the best play-by-play calls in the biz. That being said, it also needs to be said the heel character he's been given made him look like an absolute tool. They tried to make him look like an annoying heel you're supposed to hate, but it's impossible to pull off if you give that character to a guy who's pretty much the voice of WWE, being on the main TV shows and PPVs at the time, so when he's playing that obnoxious moron character, you grow to hate the voice you''ve being used to listen to, you know. As Brian Zane once put it, "We should change the term "X Pac Heat" to Michael Cole Heat"" In a way this run sort of affected his persona, being recieved with a lukewarm reception next to his partners Pat McAfee or Corey Graves (unless it's in his home state of Texas). Still, the fact that he somehow survived is nothing short of amazing. You claim Vince was on a tirade against commentators, and between that and embarrassing JR and Jerry Lawler in the process, i can believe it.

The tyranny of Michael Cole from 2011-2012 is one of the most obnoxious things WWE ever did. You can argue that Michael Cole was a good heel given how much we couldn’t stand him but one, he was drawing the wrong kind of heat too often and two, he was the lead announcer and audible 100 percent of the time. In other words, he was such a ‘good heel’, that he effectively broke the show.
