John, your video clearly showcases your exceptional kicks. The speed, balance, and form are truly impressive. As a karate veteran with 60 years of experience now in retirement, it’s heartening to see that the knowledge and standards of our art are being upheld by dedicated practitioners like you

Most people who are not trained in martial arts don’t know how to kick. Therefore, they don’t expect to be kicked either. Most of the fights that you see on the street involving 2 people throwing punches at each other. That’s why a kick to the side of the knee is very effective in collapsing your opponent and take the will to fight out of him (or her). Another great and practical tutorial 👍👍

Great advice, as usual. I studied Wado, never seen that oblique kick in Karate before only Wing Chun.

Great video. Thanks for explaining that the best possible thing to do in some cases is to get yourself away from the situation. Good explanation of what to possibly do if things do go wrong and you have to stand your ground.

Excellent video on self defence kicks. Long back, my traditional go ju ryu Shihan used to say "don't use legs where you can use your hands". Meaning no kicks above the waist in self defence. Of course, we still practiced high kicks but importance was was given for lower kicks like stomping, roundhouse to thighs and below and kansetsu geri etc. Once again , Thank you for sharing 🙏

I always like to highlight the importance of jodan kicks in practice, even though you wouldn't do them like that in reality. 1. You can't cheat a head kick, you need good technique (unless you are ridiculously flexible, but age will catch up on you eventually, and if your technique sucks by then it will be too late!). It will help you develop the technique, along with core strength, flexibility and balance. 2. They are fun. Never underestimate the value this plays in your practice. Nice video as always.

A street fight is very different from self-defense - and life-saving self-defense is different from a life-threatening street fight. Kicks are rarely truly effective in a life-threatening street fight or self-defense situation. In particular, normal side kicks or kicks to the knee will generally not fend off or stop an aggressive attacker. You have to be a real experienced fighter. One of the most important kicks is and remains the Mae Geri - once as a Kekomi to create a long distance from the attacker (like the Thai boxing version) - or at maximum speed into the genital area! Very effective, especially with shoes or boots, to create space and time for a controlled escape. But you also have to be able to escape!!! Most fighters in a real street fight situation go into absolute close range, where it is very difficult to use kick effectively...

The most effective kick to deliver in self defence is the one that was delivered with confidence and in a calm manner in a highly stressful situation. This is what martial arts training teaches us.

Have you been a street fight ?you don't know what to expect ,no situation is ideal .but this is good to know it's practical ,not overly complicated, basic and useful. I've been in a couple (few)street fights and I never look as good as I did in the dojo. that's just the way it is but just having these tools in my tool bag helps.Nothing comes with a gaurantee. I would not want to get hit by this guy ,whatever he threw at me ,it's going to hurt whether I block it or not. Then you have your natural ability and strength. Most of these will be an initial strike. Then all technique goes out the window.
