That's COMPLETELY BS you an have an adult meaningful conversation with 500 words. You need at least 30 THOUSAND. 10 thousand to start. That's what you need to read a meaningful book. and he experience IS NOT different from comprehensible input AT ALL. It's worth nothing, and he doesn't like to talk about it much, as it seems, he had PREVIOUS experience with Mandarin at SCHOOL. He DID NOT started from zero. He didn't get anyway with school (surprise!) BUT he already had a basic vocabulary, had a sense of pronunciation and rhythm , and, more importantly HE DID NOT started speaking for day one of LEANRING Mandarin. Just because it would be simply IMPOSSIBLE. He wouldn't have THE WORDS for such under the 6 thousand to 10 thousand words. It's just a lie. He was bored during the pandemic and decide to pick Mandarin back up. And started using ANKI to do so. That's no way near what a person that knows ZERO of Mandarin would be able to do. Because they would start ANKI with all the words that he ALREADY knew. And learning words, and language in general, is not a process where you keep at the same pace and speed. The more words you know the FASTER you can learn more words. Because you already have CONNECTION in your brain, in your synapsis. Before your first 1,000 words the words are basically "floating around". It's way harder for them to stick. Once you get you around 3,00 words MATURE (like mature in ANKI, but meaning mature in your brain) you'll notice you'll start to pick up words faster and faster, more and more words. Until you reach a plateau again (because the FREQUENCY of words decays quickly and drastically, but that's another topic). He started THERE. It's difficult to know because he disregards this on h s interviews but you can guess he started with at least 1,00 words, good recognition of tons and speech patterns and so on. so, dedicating his ENTIRE DAY to learn (that's another important factor) he quickly could be engaging in conversation and "start talking from the start. And nobody REALLY starting from ZERO could hope to do so. AT ALONE to have an adult meaningful conversation. DRILLING a (extremely boring for someone with and IQ at least over 70!)conversation with a cooperative partner IS NOT a real conversation. And that's yet another pint. what really made him progress so quickly in one year then? ANKI and lots of immersion in a year where he could dedicate MOST of his waking hours t o his target language. Period.

I think of output as closer to a physical skill. I believe Dr. Krashen has done enough work to show that acquiring the language does only come from input, but that the skill of forming unfamiliar words takes practice and that’s what output helps with. In other words, practicing output helps to speak, but doesn’t help learn the language itself.

Thanks for sharing this video! Language learning is a life long marathon. Anything that helps inspire and achieves further fluency is a good method. Ultimately one should focus on the ability to communicate, but refining one’s accent to sound native is the ongoing goal of perfection. Your English is totally fine, in my opinion it can actually be more attractive to have a non native accent because it reflects where you are from. If your English becomes too close to native level people can think you are from that place…. Pros and cons both ways. So one can spend a lifetime further perfecting their understanding of modern speech and/or learn ancient variants of that language or perhaps begin studying a similar language. Language learning is fun, no matter one’s final goal.

I’ll send t that mandarin interview on to a friend here - she is Chinese, lived in Ireland 3 years, has a degree and has just got a job, but she is very self conscious about her English speaking. I was trying to encourage her to use chorusing (which I guess is very similar to echoing) with sentence mining, but she is sceptical. As so often, the key problem I think is bad habits embedded from bad practice from beginner stage. It seems to me that this guy was smart enough to avoid that trap. I’m still sceptical though about early outputting - in my experience this is almost a guarantee of embedding bad pronunciation habits which then have to be worked on later, and thats very hard work.

You have to combine early output with early feedback from native speakers, and these native speakers need to be nit-picky and willing to correct you a lot. Otherwise, yes, you can develop bad habits. Also, depending on your target language, you may also need to develop the muscles in your mouth and throat to produce the sounds correctly and comfortably, which takes time. I'd rather do that work early on. I'm learning Jordanian Arabic, and this is what I did from the beginning, and I get complimented on my clear pronunciation. 😀

My main problem is listening is sometimes I am not confident. I remember in my physics class my teacher said "..to improve the capacitance you can add mica between the plates..." I thought he said "My car". I thought he had gone crazy. He said it again..I was going to interrupt him.., "how can your car fit inside this tiny capacitor"....b4 I could do it, he wrote on the board.."Mica". 说起输出的重要性，我想起了几年前自己用“某某说”app练习口语的经历。这个app就是先播放一段故事，然后播放一句话，我再复述这句话，app再打分。如果分数低，我还可以重新听一遍再复述。我的本意是练习口语，结果发现半年以后我记住了很多奇奇怪怪的单词，还在脑中建立了一个模糊的语感系统，反而是口语还是有点舌头打架。另外当初考研的时候我还背了新概念英语中的一些课文，同样有口语输出，虽然背诵的量非常少，但是仍然记住了不少单词，也培养起了语感。

Does anybody have some good tips on how to get really started with Arabic? I started 3 months ago and can read everything but obviously pretty slowly, going almost letter by letter. I do know some vocabulary but definetely not enough, lets say 150 to 200 words, struggling with verbs as I have not focused on that too much yet. For Spanish I am using LingQ and it works perfectly but its no good in terms of beginning with Arabic as going through sentence by sentence, reading that slowly costs a lot of energy and motivation. Any tips to continue?

The brain always needs time to adapt to a new script. Reading slowly is normal at the beginning. It will get easier the more you expose your brain to the new script. To reduce difficulty and improve, you can try to read three new sentences everyday, preferably out loud and rewrite them as it will help your brain get used to the script as well. This will challenge you but also reduce fatigue. Once you pick up pace, you can increase your target.

You should try to read a text while listening to somebody read it ! It has helped me a lot for german to read, for example, the pdf of a book while listening to its audiobook because it allowed me to distinguish the words. It must probably be very useful for arabic too, to hear somebody read fluently an arabic text while reading it yourself, since it can allow you to recognize the words easier !
