surprised you would cover this, but i really liked this style of video. you are correct about Sid being just an image hire for the Pistols. what a lot of people don’t know is Sid actually made a real concerted effort to get better at bass. he really tried, and he got pretty ok at doing really basic bass lines. then he met Nancy and all the musical stuff just went out the window in favor of heroin. there are live bootleg recordings and even some on youtube of the Pistols playing in late ‘77 before thier ill fated US tour, and when you can hear his bass, Sid sounded perfectly ok for what the music was. the same is true of 2 or 3 shows in thier US tour which is no small feat when he was going through heroin withdrawals at the time. later he completely spiraled, but he wasn’t totally useless all the time. in the end Sid wasn’t good at bass but for the effort he put into learning, he did as well as he could and that’s fine. the lifestyle just chwed him up and spit him out. RIP Sid. o7

He could play with basic and adequate ability for a fan to recognise what he was actually playing and without it sounding a mess. 1:14s that's "Belsen Was A Gas" and 2:15s there's some Ramones "I Don't Wanna Go Down To The Basement" for ya! He was no virtuoso super-musician showing off by playing flashy/elaborate runs on the fretboard, but he did the job. The trouble was he was often too out of it on drink and drugs. The fact some make out that he could not master a simple one to two string root note accompaniment is a myth! IMO the bass guitar played with no-frills-punk acceptable ability that's far away from Mark King or session musician standard is a vastly easier instrument to learn and play, because it requires far less skills. One finger-style playing (or two with a plectrum) only hitting two strings is far easier than mastering tricky open guitar chord shapes and changes, or learning to play the drums.

It wasn't a fraud and it wasn't even a scandal. Everyone knew. It was not an open secret. It was not a secret at all. The Pistols were a manufactured band put together by Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood who signed to EMI.

One of the oldest Heavy Metal bands in Hungary, called Ossian, used to have a bass player named László Pálvölgyi with almost the same skills like poor Sid's. The tragicomic fact is that László is still playing in some other bands, after being fired from Ossian. He'd replaced Péter Kovács T. who was a really skilled bassist but had to join the army. Unfortunately he died young. Pálvölgyi was chosen for his youth and his long blonde hair...

It's not that Sid *couldn't* play bass, 'cos let's face it...playing bass is the EASIEST job in a punk rock band...he just "wouldn't* play bass. It wasn't a priority for him. He was far too concerned with his image and heroin to be bothered with it. Rumour has it the day he got the gig, he sat down in an apartment with a bass and the first Ramones album and learned all the bass parts.
@TheAtomicPunkLmao3 ай бұрын
if you listen to any live recordings from sids last couple months with the pistols (winterlands a good example), he actually got to the point of being able to play reasonably competently. his bandmates have never really admitted he got beyond the point of utter incompetence, because it helps sustain their image.

@iusedtomakefandubswheniwas3052 kinda a naive take imo. Unless you think being a real punk means never being successful, all these mfs relied incredibly heavily on their image and general perception. Let's be frank, "punk" means 1000 different things to 1000 different people. Don't hurt animals especially not cats. I used to think he was a funny character from pop culture until I read the story of him psychotically and spontaneously murdering a cat while visiting a friends flat. The story, and I'm paraphrasing, but he allegedly grabbed the cat by the throat in a choke hold and held it at arms length until it died. The story seems to have been corroborated several times so that's him in the bin.
