This is insane. I have always complained with instructors that I was never able to "understand the mechanics behind jiu-jitsu", and this step-by-step approach never really worked for me, so I was never really able to dedicate myself to training. This seems truly game changing.

This is great. I kept trying to ask my instructors for exactly this, but I didn't have the words to explain what I wanted. Instead of just memorizing HOW to do a technique, these principles explain WHY techniques work and thus WHEN to use them. If you understand them well enough, then in theory you wouldn't have to memorize any techniques at all. You could just create new ones as you need them. Not only in jiu-jutsu, but in all areas of learning, people need more stuff like this. Edit: Someone in the replies pointed out that I may have have gotten a bit ahead of myself. This probably isn't a perfect system, and there is no way of knowing how it will stand the test of time. That said, I think it looks promising.
@jeremybooth29133 жыл бұрын
Excellent Isaac! I tell my students this in every class. Knowing many techniques is great but understanding Jiu jitsu and the physical aspects that make it so efficiently powerful is the essence of learning. You can then see a technique and make it work for yourself. The understanding of Jiu jitsu will give you the ability to be creative while rolling, creating technique or modifying a technique that fits the current position or situation!!! 👏🏼👏🏼 Jiu jitsu is truly a universal language!

Well I guess in theory maybe... I mean it may, as in a big MAY, technically be theoretically possible if it was a theoretically perfect system laid out by theoretically perfect people in a theoretically perfect world and being learnt in a perfect manner by a perfect person with perfect body and perfect knowledge, understanding, application of it and ....... yeah I'm sick of typing now lol and anyway if this theoretical dude and the the theoretical world he lives in is so damn perfect than why in this (so far from perfect) earth would he need ju jitsu anyway? 😄
@isaackulp2885 Жыл бұрын
@@iamshredder3587 I agree that theory and practice are not the same. I was talking about this as a way to understand BJJ, instead of just memorizing it. Things rarely go exactly according to plan and every technique has to be adjusted to fit the situation. You can't do that if you don't understand why your techniques work. And IN THEORY, if your understanding is good enough, techniques would just be clever applications of the underlying principles.

I really wish one day I could get an opportunity to train with you both! I love how you guys continue to look outside the box of Jiu-jitsu. Ultimately, that’s the ultimate underlining philosophy of Jiu-jitsu, to keep learning, which I assume given your experience and times on the mats, you guys are already experts, here you are STILL learning new ways to quantify jiu-jitsu. In my jiu-jitsu journey, I found learning techniques really difficult because first of all, I’m not a good visual learner, and secondly, I’ve got a terrible memory. However, I grasp concepts more easily when assessing sequences and phrases and… PRINCIPLES! I really look forward to when I can save up to afford this! Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I notice that in my gym the higher belts like to keep their knowledge to themselves because they don’t want their tricks to be known. From a person who learned martial artist to become the best I could possible be, and maybe one day compete, I never understood this mindset. “The better your training partners get, the better you get.”

I see sweeps everywhere now regardless of whether I’ve trained a specific technique. It’s like learning to improvise in music.

I think we're already getting BJJ in optima forma from both Ryron & Rener as well as John. John is long winded ,soft tone of voice uses the traditional Japanese names of technique (which I LOVE btw) very academic type, then see Rener with his renergy also very long winded lots of made up analogies on the fly super loud etc etc. Ryron would never get a word it. JD would give Rener a death stare if /when Rener cut him off which ya know would happen lol the shortest instructional video would be 8 hours long . As a Martial Arts practitioner in Judo, Karate, and Aikido that started in 1983, I would be on the first plane out of Australia to train with these gentlemen if able. Why? Starting out in any martial art is fraught with the illusion of being invincible. Through the journey of being a Martial Artist, you learn that the real message is contained within the practice of technique itself. Every great teacher I've studied with has an inherent sense of humanity in abundance and the feeling that you just want to laugh and give them a hug. student a is like a classical pianist who learns a piece by heart and plays it as it is written . student b is like a jazz pianist who studies music theory until they are so familiar with it that they can improvise along with any music they hear . and since bjj is improvised and fluid student b will allways have the edge

Thank you for this. I'm 38, done about 20 sessions now on and off because of small injuries. I still don't ' get' it and don't really know what I'm doing . I have put this down to how I learn... I've never been able to do new things until I understand what it is you are trying to acheive and the principles of it. Some people just seem to get it and some learn through the 15 step method. I've done complex sequences of moves in training with partners and honestly don't remember any of it. It seems that there is a real lack f beginners courses near me and most gyms ( for obvious reasons) don't run a drilling or basics class. Its great to hear you talk about using principles instead of trying to remember all the details of various progressions and looking and feeling stupid when you can't remember what you've been told. I honestly feel like if someone just said " right ... go and try and sumbit that guy without striking " I'd do way better than trying to ' do Ju jitsu moves' .

Yeah. I love Rener and his breakdowns but his marketing voice, that slow, listen up because this is really important type voice is really condescending and annoying sometimes. Makes me wonder what he's like when he's not in sales mode

Thought it was just me, though I think they’re just so passionate and excited about what they’re doing that it needs to come through somehow, and it’s by their voice, body language and facial expressions. But honestly, I prefer a more mild approach and conversational, but great content and energy though can’t deny that.

Very interesting, I'm reminded of the art of language learning. A lot of people, especially travelers, try to pick up languages by memorizing a series of common useful words and phrases. Those phrases are fantastic but if you encounter a situation you haven't memorized or someone responds in an unexpected way, you're out of luck! If you want to actually be a two way communicator in the language you need some understanding of grammar, even unconsciously - but most never get to a conscious understanding of how it works. Then there are those dedicated few who could not only explain it consciously, they could write a grammar textbook. If jiujitsu is like a language, then it looks like you're releasing a master grammar textbook of sorts for helping us understand it - and I mean that in the best possible way since many might associate grammar with boring lessons in school, this course doesn't look boring at all, it looks exciting! Most are content with only teaching a 'useful phrases' form of jiujitsu so to speak, not to diminish their efforts at all, but this course looks to be the reference resource we really need to get more out of it.

Groundbreaking - and the principles apply to practicing all martial art styles. So, it could be said, they're the 32 jiu jitsu principles, they're also the 32 martial arts principles which tie all martial arts techniques together! They're the roots for all disciplines. So jiu jitsu becomes all martial arts. BOOM.

I've noticed a pattern when it comes to brothers and the "family legacy" kinda thing. It's always the younger brother who has the big ideas, and the elder brother who sticks to the more traditional route. Rener is always looking for the "new thing". Hes an entrepreneur. Ryron likes to stick to and pass on what's already been established. Even my instructor who is good friends with the Gracie brothers told me that they often butt heads about what should be taught to Gracie students, with Rener always looking to adapt and modernise Jiu-jitsu, and Ryron trying to honour and respect the traditions of Jiu-jitsu and his grandfathers legacy.

This seems like it could be a game changer for many bjj students, a very legit course. The only downside is the salesman 👨💼 pitch. Why do you have to market so aggressively when you don’t really need to? You guys already have a lot of clout, don’t need the telemarketing tone.

Very interesting how your pick for number 32 and tree trunk/branching/leaves topology of these principles is so identically analogous to binary digits and areas of computer science. I'm certain it wasn't chosen randomly, but rather intentionally for evidently logical and technical reasons. Muito legal!
