Life's been a bit difficult the past week for multiple reasons. So it was nice that when I took a break from the usual, it was to play a game this awesome. The only game in recent history I think is better than this would be the Witcher 3.
Nier: Automata is the sequel to Nier: Gastalt and Nier: Replicant which are a spin-off to the original Drakengard. Nier: Automata is by Platinum Games and features high-flying 3D action oriented hack and Slash combat, coupled with bullet hell sections, twin-stick shooter sections, 2D side scrolling segments, and more.
The main characters are the Yorha Androids 2B, 9S, and A2 and the game features 3 main playthroughs, each better than the last. The first playthrough is lighthearted and it gets darker as you go. The characters are developed just enough, and the game-play sections that are repeated are done so deliberately.

please stop with this nonsense. either you lack gaming experience or you are blinded by the anime mentality. the philosophical themes are so poorly represented that it literally makes me cry. How much can you overrate this game? Yes, it's a nice experience and it's rather emotional, but there is nothing that stands out. The combat is fancy, but is not well executed. Just play the game on very hard, you'll know what I mean. The AI is so dumb even very hard isn't challenging anymore, or at least after you learn how to deal with the combat. The amount of pointless symbolism is astounding, is like it is used to excuse how average the game is. The graphics are from 2011, the mechanics are 2011, the plot is simple( Yes i know the endings A B C D and E). The character development is weak and inconsistent. A2 is so badly written, 2b is so generic and 9s was the only one with potential. The existentialism is fair , I guess. It's only natural for AIs to start thinking about an objective purpose to their existence, to contemplate about feelings. After all , intelligence is not just problem solving, intelligence is questioning existing thought- constructs , the ability to questions the assumptions you are presented it. I admit, this game had potential, but it got ruined by the bad writing... Literally everyone hates immortality .... oh wow so original. I hate how dumb the androids are designed, they are so not fit for the missions they are thrown into.... I tried to justify this with them being created to be an extension to humanity. I mean if they are here then humans are never truly gone, the knowledge left behind would be some kind of freedom, some kind of immortality. But no , that ain't the case, the game's plot is simple and may impress some teens or some adults who never read a proper book or played another philosophical game. The music is good, i can't deny that, but not incredible. The game is objectively a 7.5/10, but I enjoyed it so for me it is an 8/10. And skillup, you are the worst reviewer. you overrate every game.... I love warframe, but you wanked so hard there and the same thing you are doing with nier automata.

Fosphor, are you a troll? Thia game and series is NOTHING like that. The exact opposite. Hell, they intentially did that to make fun of people like you who take it at face value like that. Look, if you prefer excellent games with philosophical/existential ponderings that explore the darkest side of humanity, then try out yoko taros games. His games are very grim.

Ahh the good ol' "didn't understand it" argument, haven't heard that before. This game is hardly as deep as people make it out to be and it has a myriad of issues including the hilariously bad combat and how it just randomly throws in philosophical quotes but never makes proper usage of them, which also makes it pretentious. And then there are the amazingly bland characters, the messy route A and B storylines and the overall narrative being all over the place. No this game is hardly a masterpiece, and yeah I'm pretty sure I actually understood it.

[BIG SPOILERS] Zaric forgot to mention the biggest reversal/reveal regarding 2B and 9S. Up until the end of route C you think 2B is a good old tsundere, being cold at first and warming up later, and 9S is just a beta supporting character, but at the end of route C A2 drops the bomb, saying that since 9S is an advanced reconnaissance model, the android leadership knew that he was going to figure out how they set up all of YoRHa as a disposable ploy, and how all of them were supposed to die, so they set up 2B, who is actually 2E to handle 9S. i.e. B-models are battle androids, but E-models are executioner androids, infiltration units designed to dispose of unwanted people among androids. You absolutely must do side-quest called Amnesia, as it explains what E-models are, and how they themselves suffer and go mad. So yeah, bottom line is, 9S was the most dangerous unit to the android leaders' treacherous plan, and 2E (as 2B) was attached to him to kill him again and again every time he got close to figuring things out. That is why she was cold and distant, that is why ending of route A/B shows her crying and that is why she's in fact smiling as she's being killed by A2. Oh, and if you think this is heartwrenching, well, there are many many side quests that have similarly sad resolutions. God damn it, Yoko Taro, you crazy genius, what have you done to us? :O

[MORE SPOILERS] 2B is loyal to YoRHa and is very attached to YoRHa Commander, but in her true role of 2E working for years with 9S, she eventually fell in love with him and won't leave this doomed cycle of executions because it's the only way she can be close to him. The "emotions are prohibited" ice queen persona is a defense mechanism to try to protect herself from the strong bond she feels with him, but it falls apart any time 9S is in danger or is suffering. She slips and calls him "Nines" in the Forest Kingdom because she usually calls him that and probably gave him that nickname. Breaking down emotionally every time 9S suffers is completely consistent with her true feelings for him and with what she does in early route C to protect him, which had dire consequences for her. If you search around in Flooded City later in route C, 2B confesses her true feelings for 9S in a message she left for him. And to further to blow our minds, 9S knew more about her secret identity than he let on. He appears to preserve some memories that are supposed to be wiped.

SPOILER AHEAD: Ya 9S is the actual protagonist, if you follow the story 2B is only there to eventually kill him, because as 9S already said at the beginning of the game, there is no need for a fighting unit like 2B to do this mission he as a scanner model is actually more capable of doing it.

+Zaric Zhakaron: That's too bad. But that happens a lot. Many people like either one or the other. Maybe it depends on which one you played first. P4G was my first Persona game and I loved it. I later catched up on 3 and loved that as well, but not quite as much as 4. +TMTLive: In light of the upper paragraph, that's really awesome, that you liked it even more! I just came here to circle jerk about how amazing this game is. This game literally changed my expectations and the way I will look at video games forever. It raised the bar on how a story can be told through a video game and is the best example of a story that can ONLY be told through a video game. Without going into spoilers (but people who finished the game know what I'm talking about), the way you unlock the true ending is probably one of my favorite gaming moments of all time, and what the game asks you to do at the very end makes that experience 10 times more meaningful that I could've ever imagine. I usually avoid using the word masterpiece but this truly is a masterpiece in every way.

Witcher 3 was a great game, but honestly it can't even come close to Nier Automata. Tastypie I saw mediocrity at its core , the rpg elements were not in depth ,very tacked on like a far cry game (ubisoft rpg formula) , the voice acting was cringe worthy , some being close to "the room" levels of bad , the combat was very bland , shoot arrows and maybe a few whacks here and there, the side quests had no impact and seemed just thrown in like it was just another box they had to tick for it to have those "rpg elements", the story was average at best , a very forgetful game ,everyone will remember geralt , the dragon born , nathan drake , kratos etc but aloy will be forgotten along with horizon itself

In all the 70 hours i never got bored of the combat and even tho i played the game on hard i didnt get frustrated from the dificulty. This was the first game since undertale which actually made me question my descisions while playing it and the immersion this game created was so great that i actually found myself crying at some scenes. For me this game clearly is the best game i have ever played.

This is the kind of game that will utterly bewilder most games industry higher ups. They'll see individual aspects on a surface level and try to imitate it, completely failing to grasp the details and how it comes together as an artistic whole.

I got the true ending the other day and... GG Yoko Taro. I was looking forward to it because I loved the OG Nier but after beating it I don't think I was excited enough. If you told me the soundtrack alone would be better than the original I would've been very skeptical, to say I was blown away would be an understatement. Easily my GOTY alongside Persona 5 and Breath of the Wild.

Great video! Just one minor correction regarding looting other people's bodies. This isn't explained so i thought the same at first but you don't actually get chips from the corpses but buffs that last for 30 seconds and in my opinion are rather pointless. When you collect those buffs a small chip icon will appear below your health bar which will flicker and disappear after 30 sec. That's the buff indicator.

Actually this is the most important video game of the decade, if not one of the most important video games in the history of media. It isn't simply a game, it is a form of art dealing with various provoking and questionable subjects, with a high emotional impact that goes beyond the standard formula of video games. We have seen such things in Metal Gear Solid 2, SOMA and Shadow of the Colossus, however those games are old now, and it took a lot of time to make NieR and NieR:Automata to bring back the feels. Say what you want, but i don't play video games for fun only, i play them for their emotional impact. And NieR: Automata can only function as a video game, not a movie, a book or an anime/manga.

Excellent video, and I agree completely. Watched you play through, and even if I don't end up playing myself...I'm very likely to buy this down the road just to own it and toss a little support the developer's way. This isn't just a game, this was most definitely art on every level. The music was fantastic, the story was epic, the aesthetics gorgeous, and the gameplay great. It really had everything you could want............and an exploding skirt. Just fucking perfect.

Lots of things I can nitpick and critique about this game but they're all irrelevant. My god, it's just such a meaningful game and incredibly significant in it's story and representation. I can't rate it anything less than a pure masterpiece. F*ck 10/10 scales. And here I was about a year ago calling this game overrated. It's underrated. After playing it I wanna take a time traveling machine and slap myself silly.

9S has that Tidus effect with me.. Originally I didn't care about him but in the end damn..Not going to spoil it. Anyone who hasn't beat it yet and go for ending E, make sure you've done everything you plan on doing, you will not get another chance to do everything depending on what you choose at the end.

Altsz Yeah I wish I wish I spoiled that part for myself, I thought you might get another section of the ending after choosing it so I chose it the first damn time I got asked..now I've gotta do the whole game again just to get everything else unlocked since I basically only unlocked everything 30m before everything got deleted, idk wtf I was thinking..

Altsz Haha thanks..Idk when I'm going to get around to play it all the way through again now that Dark Souls 3's and FFXV's DLC is out/coming out today. Good luck beating it, it's definitely worth going through and getting the A-E Endings. E is probably the most touching endings I've ever seen that's full of symbolism that's pulled off masterfully. I thought people were exaggerating but they're not, it's really that damn good.

zaid ahmed Oh man that's a tough question for me..I'm a big fan of both but a bigger fan of TW because of it's fantasy elements but for story I'd say Nier, I damn near cried during endings A, C, D, and E(I had a lot of silent tears for E..) Once finishing Nier I don't feel much of an urge to keep playing while with TW3 I replayed it in it's entirety back to back multiple times. I can't really compare these 3 because they focus on very different things
@WhiskeyTango76s

To gibe the only answer I can in terms of what you may consider better would be to give a detailed question and what kind of gamer you are. Do you care more about a so derduk experience that you will most likely never forget that also suffers from true replayability? I saw true replayability because I don't consider each path a separate start(other than maybe the second path but still offers enough information due to the change of perception which I believe is significant enough for it to be considered something other than a simple replay. The 3rd path is completely new and completely changes the pace that the first paths set up and ran with so that's just another reason I don't consider it adding replay value. If you would rather play a game with a beautiful story and don't care about not wanting to start it over again then I'd reccpmend Nier, it's a beautiful story that doesn't offer much(for me at least) in replayability that doesn't take long to bring to a conclusion, of that sounds more enticing to you than TW3, a game that is absolutely massive and surprisingly lush(for a game that size having that much detail is rare, not to mention the passion the creators had as gamers for making it an amazing game with the free content releases, the significant DLC with one of them being bigger than enite games that begins telling a story and ends finishing the story(The exact opposite of FFXV even though I'm a pretty big FF and Square(Soft) fanboy I can't overlook what they did with XV, hopefully they fox what could've been the best FF). The combat is great once you get used to it so I recommend playing on Deathmarch because it's hard but fair at the same time, a simplified version of Dark Souls combat system that makes me want to fight every chance I get because the immersion levels get high when you're strongly suggested to fight like a real Witcher. The story is long, game play isn't perfect but it's good nonetheless, and one of the better Fantasy adventures I've ever played that isn't a FF. The Witcher will last you a very long time and present you a story that is memorable, Nier presents and amazing story you will never forget but will not last with you very long after you learn everything. Think of it this way; a great TV short series just started that was very good, it doesn't take long for the finale to happen, that's Nier. TW3 is more like a TV series that is also very good but takes a long time to end. Basically, The Witcher 3=Breaking Bad Nier=The American version of Torchwood that aired on Premium channels for a bit but ultimately came to a quick end, nothing like the original British series but was good nonetheless. If you want a game that'll last you a long time then go with TW3, Nier is like a shining star, beautiful but burns out the quickest. I hope that helps explain a little, im not too great at explaining things like this when it cones to 2 of my favorite games.

At 6:30 you talk about the broken cities being "too good looking" for the time that passed is that humanity aleready fell once in our time ( this is presented in the first game) and had to rebuilt itself from scratch in 5 000 AD so it's been only about two to three thousand year since the second fall of humanity to the robots. I hope I was able to clear that up.

I find myself watching this video, 2 years since I had played it. I took a day off of work when it launched, played through on normal difficultly, and the emotions it has brought about even just listening to zaric's description just hit me hard. I really need to do another play though. Days before I had watched all of clemps video analysis' on first Drakengard, then the 2 nier games (oh, looking at this just now, he put out a full analysis on automata, Now I have some more to watch). With around 3 hours of prior lore + watching the stage play, I was so hyped for this game it was unlike any other I had been for, culminating with my day taken off of work. After beating this game and even to this day, my phone's ringtone is the amusement park soundtrack with vocals. This was defiantly my all time favorite single player game (2nd goes to far cry 3) up to this point. Now if only games released in 2018 were any good. Because of your video, I have reinstalled the game, and will do a play through soon. It's been long enough IMO. If you still have not played this game, what are you waiting for? its probably on sale and it is still amazing.

(Possible spoilers below) I played through NeiR:Automata, and dammit, now I want Yoko Taro to make another Drakengard game to compliment this. There are so many things we want to know that have yet to be told, like where did Angelus' corpse get hauled off to, what do the watchers (The main antagonistic force seen throughout the series of NeiR/Drakengard) have in store for the world of NeiR, if the watchers had any involvement within the events of NeiR:Automata, If the accord androids from Drakengard 3 has any relations to the world of NeiR and its androids, and where inthe Fuck did Caim go after ending E of the original Drakengard (I suspect he's dead since Angelus died in ending E, but they don't mention him at all in NeiR's timeline(s), they don't even find his body, so I'm not sure what happened to him). This series, and its timelines, has so much to explore and cover that it makes me yearn for more new information about the NieR / Drakengard Multiverse.

There's one thing you missed. 2B is still basically the main character even if she's not the protagonist in the second half of the game. Everything A2 and 9S do in the second half of the game is because of 2B; he wants to avenge her while A2 is following 2B's role and final wishes. She even interrupts the final boss battle in Ending D as A2 remembers her promise to not kill 9S.

I only have one criticism about this video, which is more about a lack of familiarity with the series than anything. During the first Nier there weren't any modern, skyscraper type buildings. Everyone lived in much more simple structures and small towns. Furthermore the two games take place in more or less the same area, evident by ruins in the desert which are identified as an area from the fist Nier during a side quest. As someone who has played the first one I can say for certain that there were no apartment buildings near this area, which points to the idea that they had been built sometime in the couple thousand years between games. Now I understand that someone who hasn't played the first would assume that they are ruins from our time, but for people familiar with the series it goes to show that there have been more cycles of the rise and fall of civilization between when the first Nier ended and when this game started, so it is entirely possible that they might still have been standing depending on just how long ago they had been built.

Just a reminder for you. In the first Nier the Shadowlord's place is located in the ruins of a metropolis (maybe Tokyo). You can see that after you access the place from an elevator in the Lost Shrine (surrounded by mountains). Yoko Taro said that there is a tunnel that goes beyond the mountains. So both games share the same greater area but from different sides. Also your last statement is invalid cause after the first Nier we know what is going to happen, no cycles, just androids

I clicked on this video because I just bought Nier for sale on PSN for $29.99. However, when I read in the description that, "The only game in recent history I think is better than this would be the Witcher 3, I just cringed. I thought the Witcher 3 was atrociously terrible. Hopefully Nier isn't a tedious game like the Witcher 3--the most overrated game of all time.

Hi! i know this is not the correct video to ask about oblivion but i do hope that you can answer me some questions if i ask on a recent one. The thing is that i dowloaded a deluxe versión of the game but it includes alot of modifications from the guy who was playing it, most of them are messing up my game experience, for example when i lvl up i cant put any points on my skills. Another example is that when im walking alot of missions just pop out in the screen without me talking with any npc. So the question is how do i make my game just a default versión? is it really necesary to search for other game and start from 0? Thank you for your help, and please forgive my broken english ^^ have a nice day
