My-yumi was stuck on the first of the 7 Forces of Business Mastery: creating an effective business map. To create an effective business map, you must first ask yourself, "What business am I in?" My-yumi didn’t know what business she was in. She had changed her business several times before landing on an innovative model: leveraging talented, stay-at-home mom CPAs to provide low-cost services to those in need. It was a great idea, yet her heart didn’t seem to be in it. Why?
Tony says, “She doesn’t have the emotional juice in this because more fear is governing her than hunger.” She was letting her limiting beliefs hold her back - and all progress comes when we change our story. My-yumi had the knowledge, but not the psychology. And as Tony often says, business success is 80% psychology and only 20% skills. She needed to shift her mindset by creating a business map.
A map is bigger than a business plan: It allows you to see both where you are and where you want to go. But the map is only valuable if you are honest about where you are. If you know where you want to go but you lie to yourself about where you are, you’re never going to get there. That’s why the first question to ask yourself is, “What business are you in? What business are you really in?”
Once My-yumi determined where she was, Tony helped her figure out how to get where she wanted to be. She embraced the “exchange don’t change” strategy, realizing all parts of her were valuable. She didn’t need to become a different person. She just needed to bring forth the My-yumi who could take massive action for her business.
