One more horse tip-of-the-day: The spring grass is rich and horses/ponies can get sick from it -colic and laminitis, etc. You have to limit it and control it. The thumb nail of Peaches laying down reminded me of it. CONGRATULATIONS Lily on your successful horseshow!!! So great! Did the show clothes I sent fit???

Any other horse people just like totally disagreeing with everything they doing? like no hate to Lily at all shes young I take it she hasnt been taught a lot, like those horses need a bigger paddock with grass as they need to graze throughout the day, also Peaches to me either has no muscle in his hindquarters or is getting skinny, That fencing when I watched Blaze roll he could so easy just roll onto his other side get caught then you will end up with Lily crying cause her horse is injured and maybe have to be put down cause of the damage Blaze could do to himself by getting shocked while tangled in that fence. Also Lily I see you put one pile of hay out for both those horses maybe next time put it into 3-4 small piles around the paddock so then Peaches cant guard the pile and not let Blaze eat. and your fence brand does do horse fencing I know you only want to use one type of fencing for all the animals but net type fencing for horses is like a death sentence if they get tangled into it. And I just want to like add us horse people arent like bullying or say hating we just want to educate cause of how much we see inexperience horse owners do stuff that is a safety hazard and we just want to help out so you dont end up loosing your horses to something like getting tangled in that net fencing or getting colic from eating the woodchips as there is no food in that paddock run for them.
@holliebarnes701510 ай бұрын
I would definitely heed the warnings on fencing… it’ll only be a matter of time before someone gets pushed into the netting and getting wrapped up in that could easily be a death sentence. All it takes is the net to cut in the right place and it could be something the vet won’t be able to fix. 😢

All we had was a weak eletric wire and they stayed in most of the time. Do horses need real fences yes: space; yes. They will get out if they want to though

Has anyone stopped to think that the pony may be jumping out of the fence because the palomino is dominant and is kicking and pushing him around but there isn't enough room for him to get away? Now that he can't move because he is afraid of the fence but it isn't large enough for him to safely navigate, where is he supposed to go when the palomino gets after him?
@charlottecolloff-hinde765710 ай бұрын
Watching how rapid the progress is towards the new pasture for the cattle and sheep made me think of all the lovely jump poles that you're sawing up and burning. These will be invaluable for Lily when she starts to school the ponies on groundwork - trotting poles and combinations of small fences to work over as grids. They're all there available right now for free as you're clearing the land. A bit of wood preserver on the rustic poles will keep them good for some years if stored under cover and off the ground when not in use. Remove the bark and paint them for show-jumping fences. Perhaps something that Jonah and Josiah might like to tackle for Lily's next birthday present - cavaletti, poles and a rack to keep them in, maybe even some jump wings? Expensive to buy but well worth making.❤

Yep, horses need some strand lines not the netted portable fencing. A bigger paddock wouldn't hurt or letting them take turns outside solo and turn outs to the bigger field together. But first and foremost, get that netted fencing out of there. That is not even good for short term horse fencing...

Justin, you may think its funny when the horse freaks out when touching the electric fence but you wont be laughing when you get the vet bill. Rather use a wooden 3 board fence or provide a bigger turnout. Panicked horses = colic. or deep cuts. It also changes his personality. And that could cause him to spook more which leads to people getting hurt. I don't mean to be insensitive to you but Its really kind of ignorant when you laughed. You just created a potential problem for your farm and safety.. Never use fear to teach a horse

This is no way to keep horses I am afraid. They need a paddock, as everyone says, that has safe fencing. It is not great to keep the poor animals in a small enclosure and give them electric shocks to keep them contained. Also all that noise in front of them is not going to keep them calm. You need paddock rails around a paddock. No one keeps horses like this I am afraid. You need approx 1 - 1.5 acres per horse. Not a pocket handkerchief bit of dirt with unsafe fencing. Keeping horses is an art - and it takes research.

I just want to add that having your kids "boss" you around is not always a good thing. I've seen kids actually boss their parents in public, demanding they do what they want. As a way to clarify, having your kids "instruct" their parents on something the parent's don't normally do, is definitely ok. It's funny how one word can strike a chord with people. That word, boss, just hit me hard, due to the fact that I've seen too many kids disrespect their parents, by bossing them as if they owned them. Sad to see. But in your case, seeing your kids take control of their responsibilities, is quite refreshing! They seem well adjusted, and can tackle any project with some pretty good knowledge of what they have learned through the years on the farm. Thumbs up to you and your family!
@GrandmaKarenHasAFarm10 ай бұрын
I was just going to say the same thing. I think Justin actually meant "instruct" but used the word "boss" which I agree that children should not "boss" their parents around. I agree with Justin's comment on making your children feel trustworthy. That part was great!

A bit dramatic... they are learning. They have people with experience advising them. The small paddock is not the only land they have access to for the horses. Take a deep breath... lol
@CantStopScrollingHelp10 ай бұрын
@DanSleeAquariums I can be dramatic, but this is the only enclosure they are offering them throughout the cold months. Once they're put back on pasture, they will still be penned using the premier 1 livestock fencing, which is in no way appropriate for horses. And at no point is it safe to pen two horses in such a small space because there isn't adequate space for them to evade one another safely and without running into the hot fencing. I'm fully aware they have multiple coaches helping them, but that does not negate their poor choices in enclosures for their horses. There is no way to know what advice they are getting, be it good or bad advice, or if they are listening to it . Mostly I'm frustrated because they show this to their million plus subscribers on a platform they have used as educational. This is teaching very poor husbandry and there isn't a good reason for it.

On the dairy herd mostly cross freshens in Ireland it’s about 40% a2a2 but selective breeding these days is reducing that as Holstein and milk production volumes are the norm. Allowing Lili to be your “boss” is an example of “female empowerment “. Modern feminists have nothing on you Dad, you are a champion patriarchal leader, who knew traditional values enforce modern concepts. Traditional values are always the better choice, tried and true over millennia’s. The world is falling apart because we have ignored the fundamental. Men and women are different for a reason. Parents need to parent their children in childhood and maybe when the children become adults they will choose to be friends with their parents. No guarantees.
