My Dad held a bike license for years when he was younger, so drove a three-wheeler to carry his work tools rather than get a full license. He loved his Reliant Supervan, and claimed it cornered fine with his tools over the rear wheels. It served him well until he blew the engine up. A mechanic mate of his said that it couldn't be salvaged, and there weren't many spare parts for the model he had, *but* he just so happened to have a spare engine that he could swap in. "Only thing is", he warned, "it's race tuned." When my Dad stopped laughing, and as he was getting mate's rate for an otherwise unwanted engine, he paid for the replacement and a few other parts that came with it. The day he picked it up, the mechanic told him to watch the throttle- how he did laugh! He was till convinced his mate was taking the piss right up until he popped it in gear, dropped the clutch, and launched the Supervan out of the garage and clear across the road. He stopped just shy of a brick wall on the opposite side and nearly put his mate through the window- thankfully, it stopped pretty well too. He said that it wasn't much noisier, and the engine looked no different from the outside, but the thing would accelerate like crazy until it ran out of gears. Now the damn thing could do wheelies, too! In fact, he had trouble keeping the front wheel on the tarmac in first gear. It was a long-running joke the Reliant had a speedometer marked up to 100mph; now it actually had a use. He would flash other cars to get out of the way in the fast lane, and the look of incredulous shock he got as he overtook them was hilarious. He used to have the most fun revving at the lights and grinning at the car next to him; he said nobody ever turned down a drag race with a Reliant because there was no way they could lose. They could probably hear his maniacal cackling even as he wheelied off into the distance. There was no way in hell that thing was road legal. Unfortunately, it tipped far more easily now, and would bounce from left to right all the way down the road unless he gunned it hard enough out of the corner to lift the front of the car (that was his excuse for two-wheeled driving, I guess). Alternatively, if his tools and a few of his drinking buddies were in the back, it was *much* more stable. He proved this one drunken night with the Supervan full of friends, speeding recklessly, and 'accidentally' missing his turn on a roundabout. He got steadily faster (seeing how hard he could push it before it would cock a rear wheel, his mates cheering and whooping all the way) and missed his turn a couple more times before he noticed a police car sat on the road he'd just entered from, its two occupants staring in disbelief. They were still sitting there as he completed another couple of laps and screamed off along his intended route (scrape-bounce-bounce-wheelieeeeeeeeee). His mates in the back reported that they were still sitting there staring until he drove out of view, and did not attempt to give chase. He finally retired the Supervan when the front wheel fell off. Also, he eventually got a full license, and as a result of parenthood, became a slightly more responsible driver (and sadly, even sold his motorbike, getting another one only when my brother and I were in our teens). Until the day he died though, he would still speak fondly of his old three-wheeled rocket. He said he always figured those coppers let him get away for no other reason than that they didn't want to have to explain a high-speed chase with a three-wheeler- they'd have been laughing stocks if they didn't catch him!
