I rode it in it´s first year of operation, when there was only lapbars and a flimsy leather-strap that you were supposed to fling over your upper body. The first drop was like falling out of an airplane and the fourth inversion was just BRUTAL, as your head was simultaneously whipped down to the extreme force as you crashed into the loop, and then you were yanked sideways rather vieolently during the very twisted inversion that was more like a corkscrew. This inversion was at least modified once or even twice during the first years the ride was operating on the fair circuit.

me too - I rode it once in 1986 when it was still painted all red. It left me with a weird feeling in my neck. It was the first looping coaster I rode and a big test of courage for me. My neck had recovered completely after a week or two, but I really think this coaster went too far with the G-forces. That summer there were news reports of people seeking medical attention due to back problems that were traced back to rides on Thriller, after which some of the track was supposedly changed - this was probably the moment when the color scheme was changed from only red to "olympia-looping"-style with different colors for each section. I also do remember the entrance to the 4th loop to be the most intense part, but the loops were all insane, there were positive Gs even at the apex of the first two loops, the second one stronger than the first. Also, the first drop felt as if the ride tried to tip you sideways out of the car. A very unexpected sensation, very "wrong".

2:23 I've always found Schwarzkopf's visual presentation to be part of signature style. His coasters tend to have a 'theatrical' layout where 'star' elements were placed up front, whereas other elements were placed behind, with taller elements placed further to the back, thus forming the 'stage'
@mikethewhizz50854 жыл бұрын
Usually those star elements are also painted a different color, and the lift hill tops out at the very back. It's a pretty good design language for portable rides really, since they dont have any natural landscape to work with; and since traveling fairs and carnivals tend to charge by the ride ticket, it makes sense to use the visuals of the coaster to convince people to take a ride.

Nice to see good old "Thriller" getting some love. I rode it a zillion times back in the day, and never got any problems. The combination of that amazing first drop with the vertical loops was insane, and the first drop in particular (in the last train!) remains one of my fondest coaster memories to this very day! To be actually honest, I have never experienced anything quite like it again. Not even Expedition Geforce comes close. I think they should at least resurrect that (original!) drop alongside the pre-drop section and the first loop, and then maybe build something new from there.

It should have never left Germany (But, did get privilege to ride a legend!) Side note. As a themed park, AstroWorld operated 3 of Anton's coasters. Greezed Lightnin' (Shuttle loop type 2) & Viper (Looping Star) also relocated from Six Flags St. Louis. Tornado + Viper were close to each other in the park. The latter 2 coasters were there until 2005. One last note: (One windy weekday, the aircraft beacon light) from the Astro Needle broke off, fell over 300 feet and plunged through the roof of the computer room 4 Tornado! Zonga was the worst roller coaster that I have ever been on. I am 6'4 and the coaster trains only really fit someone under 5'8. My knees were jammed under my chin, and the ride gave out real whiplash. The first drop was like a drop tower without brakes. You slammed into your seat at the bottom of the hill. Brutal!
@TheFett0074 жыл бұрын
I rode this when it was "Taz's Texas Tornado." I rode it twice, and only twice, for two reasons: First, as the video states, it was often closed for maintenance. Second, the shoulder restraints on the original trains were godawful. I was and am rather tall, and the hard restraints would cut into my shoulders every inversion. Since the ride already had strong G-forces, it was all the worse, literal torture on my shoulders and spine. I also want to point out that Astroworld got this coaster-- a prefab design from a defunct company-- around the time other Six Flags parks were getting rides like "Bizarro" by B&M at Great Adventure, or Superman: The Escape by Intamin at Magic Mountain, or "Raging Bull" by B&M at Great America, not to mention all the B&M "Batman" inverts at the other parks. Despite being located smack dab in the middle of a huge urban area, Astroworld was always an afterthought to Six Flags.
@RY30DM4 жыл бұрын
I visited Astroworld in '02 with a bunch of other enthusiasts and it killed us having to pass the coaster over and over again since it was closed. Astroworld was a small park, so it was almost always in view. I've got to say the current most intense coaster on earth has got to be Skyrush at Hersheypark in the last row. I've ridden Skyrush so many times, and I've never gotten comfortable with it. I'm a nervous wreck every time Lol. Recently this summer, a ride op actually left space between me and the lap bar, and I didn't raise my voice to have him push it down. That was one of the craziest rides ever.

I rode this when it was at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom as Zonga. As mentioned in the video, if the coaster sat in the sun for too long it was prone to breakdowns, and Six Flags Marine World/Discovery Kingdom, despite knowing this, put it in an empty lot next to Medusa with zero to no shade. something to note: while Thriller is probably the most intense coaster made recently, it is likely that there were more intense coasters made during the early experimental days. By example, take Flip Flap Railway, which operated from 1895 to 1902 at Sea Lion Park on Coney Island, the predecessor to Luna Park. That coaster was the very first looping coaster ever built in North America. It is also known as one of the most intense coasters ever built, if not the most intense coaster ever built. How intense was it? The 25 feet tall loop would injure riders from whiplash. I'm not sure if there are official figures, but it is said that loop would produce forces of up to 12 G!

I can't believe there hasn't been a traveling coaster successor to Schwarzkopf rides all these years later. The US only has Pinfari and spinning wild mouse coasters while Europe has at least three traveling Schwarzkopf coasters. What happened to the demand for these to be made and bought by show operators?

But Kong is not subtly themed to Swayzak (or Detective Kelford Mackenzie if you wanna call him that), so it's not better.

I actually went to Six Flags Marine World when Zonga was there. I was too young to ride any of the large coasters but it's always stuck in my mind. The blue tracks with the different colored loops was always hella cool to me. I had no idea it was so short lived, but its cool to think that the only 2 or 3 times I've ever been was during its time there

Great video of a fantastic, little-known coaster among enthusiasts! I edited this from what I wrote a year ago. I come on too strong, smarty-pants, and even mean/rude sometimes. I'm trying to change. I was fortunate to ride Thriller at a German fair in 1985 and also at Astroworld (I'm a Texan). I have also ridden Drier Looping (Triple Looper/Quimera) at a German fair in 85 and also rode Olympia Looping. Thriller (the coaster in this video) doesn't have quite the intensity of Drier Looping (similar to Mindbender in Edmonton, and the same coaster that'll be opening at Indiana Beach this year). Thriller was FUN in Germany but was terrible at Astroworld. Since we rode Thriller just days after Drier Looping, we were spoiled by the higher intensity of Drier. Thriller _was_ a very strong ride, though & we loved it. Olympia Looping was fun, too, but Drier Looping stands alone as one of the most intense steel roller coasters in the world. At Astroworld Thriller had accordion shoulder restraints which were painful and almost ruined the ride, but in Germany it was lap bars only in 85 but later they installed accordion restraints.

I remember riding this on a few different trips to Marine World (now Discovery Kingdom) when I was about 14 years old. I recall loving it, but there was a lot of headbanging just like on an SLC. I also remember it opening way later in the afternoon most days. It would spend a lot of the morning hours testing just running empty trains over and over again. I'm not sure why that was.

I got on this coaster at astroworld. All I can say is holy crap was it a coaster. The laterals were *INSANE* and the positives were *AMAZING*. If you ask me though, I’ll tell you I think Mindbender is more forceful but that’s only because I rode this so long ago. It was a super weird coaster. Unlike any other Schwarzkopf I’ve ever ridden.
