Compared to the IDW comic run, yeah this is tame. In IDW they had mass genocides, torture, cannibalism, and that's being done on both sides. Also the war started in the film more or less the sameway in the comic, with Megatron being a miner turned philosopher and gladiator leading the oppressed Cybertronians to rise against their high council, who were being protected by the Autobots.

What's funny about the ending of this film is that apparently it wsnt the original ending. The novelization, which is based on the script at the time, ends it with Optimus only killing Sentinel, and not only he is more conflicted about it, but him and Megatron even decide to end the war with a truce because they are both just done with the fighting. There is even a little jab at the usual characterization of Optimus when he goes "unlike you, I wont kill someone who is looking for peace" when Megatron tries to goad Optimus to try killing him for a moment.

Actually it’s the same idea. It’s a planet invasion he’s going up against. When has that ever not been brutal? The avengers were justified after raiding thanos’ home after the infinity war ended, just to then decapitate a defenseless and wounded thanos right on the spot. You can complain about war crimes all you want, but when talking about a planet invasion, that stuff is irrelevant. Also, tactically speaking, Optimus has admitted that his autobots were “overmatched and outnumbered”. The fact that the decepticons themselves also commit “war crimes”, the autobots should might as well give up at that point because there is no cartoon speech Optimus can give to win the war

The Seson 1 finale starts a 3-episode series where Optimus loses his memory as leader of the Autobots, and is manipulated by Megatron to become a Decepticon. Eventually, he realized they're full of shit, and when Vehicons (Depticon cannon fodder) start kicking the shit out of him, he accidently pulls out his guns and goes, "I'm... armed?" Though considering this is a Bay film, they probably are built-in in the movies. Edit: I love these replies, especially the ones pointing out that this "peaceful race" does infact come out of the womb guns blazing in the movies.

That being the fact that it started with a revolutionary miner turned gladiator naming himself after the fallen Prime Megatronus. Bayformers has its own comic series exclusively for it, which expands on the universe, like how Megatron used to be a very reasonable and peace loving bot and his eventual descent to madness.
