The fact that you get them right before the Tyrant fight, there’s only one set of them, the Tyrant is one of the only bosses they work on, and literally everyone agrees they are best used for the Tyrant fight makes it pretty obvious they were supposed to be used there. It’s not like Code Veronica doesn’t have other stuff like this either, the sniper rifle is a normal weapon that can be used on anything but you’re obviously supposed to use it in the Nosferatu fight for the same reason (except you lose the sniper after the Nosferatu fight because you switch to Chris after it). You don’t have to use the sniper rifle (in fact there’s an entirely different ending cutscene for beating him with the handgun or knife) but it makes the fight infinitely easier. I had this in my "watch later" section for a long time, and I finally watched it, lol. Awesome! I always thought that they were meant to be related in some way to P-Epsilon. Since they don't usually deal lethal damage, but just affect the overall healthpool by percentages, my guess is that they are supposed to weaken BOWs, probably by messing with their metabolism or something and making their regeneration worse. Which is of course especially useful with Tyrants, which have super-powered healing. P-Epsilon is called that because it is meant to work on creatures derived from the Epsilon strain of the virus (the t-Virus type used in RE1, and which the one in RE2 and RE3 is derived from). So it not having an effect on t-Veronica mutants (Nosferatu, Steve, Alexia, and even Alexia's babies as seen in the video) actually makes sense. Again, great video!

I completely forgot we made these! Yeah, documentation was sparse because they were made as mostly a knee-jerk response to the B.O.W.s breaking loose and were never tested extensively because of their obscurity and most conventional weaponry still seemed effective enough. They wer deemed as 'noteworthy and mildly effective, but not worth further development and implementation.' The 'gas' inside them is actually a more potent version of the sedation chemicle that is used in the suspension baths when test subjects are put in stasis. In small quantities, they sedate the subject and put them in a continuous sleep. When concentrated and weaponized, they cause severe tissue degredation in T-Virus cells. They're only 'mildly effective' because they lose effectiveness with repeated use against the same target, with some very rare circumstances that they can kill the target outright.

How did he not use some super variant of T on himself or the mold..his whole ENTIRE goal was to be immortal and make the world then evolve, such lack of consistent exposition!) However, as a horror writer with already one series out on several popular KZbin channels about Wendigos, this might seriously work in my favor! I heard that RE: Apocalypse (the next saga of the mold or whatever probably with Rose and all the mutated children of the original cast like Sherry and Jake) will have Wendigos in it the same way village had vamps and Lycans (I was SERIOUSLY dissapointed with the vamps!!!!) so that will help me with future publication if Wendigos start trending EVEN MORE lol 😈😎😇

I have the PS2 version of this (Code: Veronica X), now keep in mind that this was the era where the internet as we know it today was still very young and game walkthroughs were in the transition between strategy guides and online. The guide book for this kind of glossed over the Anti-B.O.W. gas and dismissed it as a weird and useless weapon. One thing that it did mention for the Tyrant boss fight though was to save all of the gunpowder arrows (for the bowgun) and pump them all into the boss as fast as possible. On my first playthrough I beat that one on the second try using that one. Something noteworthy on the printed Strategy Guide era of walkthroughs is that there are many instances where the book is wrong, where the writer did one walkthrough and didn't even try any side paths, or even put in things that were false upon release which may have indicated some of these guides were done using a pre-release build.

Huh, neat! Any chance of a video of grenade rounds in general? What they are effective for and do across all RE games.
@rhysiare2 жыл бұрын
I think this would be a great video. If I remember correctly, Kai said in his latest stream - the RE3 stream with Lisa, that even he didn't find out what exactly the Freeze rounds did and how useful they were until recently. Some RE games give info on the usefulness of Flame vs. Acid rounds. But in general, grenade ammo is underexplained, despite the grenade launcher having the most variability in ammo with all its different types. It'd be awesome to see a video on this cool weapon and all its ammo types (and their various names, i.e. grenades, rounds, shells) in RE - Acid, Mine, Flash, Neuro, Electric, Explosive, B.O.W. Gas, Freeze/Nitrogen, and Flame/Incendiary. There's just so many! Save us Kai! Lol.

These rounds were on the files of Resident Evil Outbreak, and they actuality work, but those are no where to be found on game normally

It doesn't work on bats because those aren't B.O.W.s but simple bats.

Hey kai, amazing video as usual... Can you please make a video demonstrating how damage and health work in most Resident Evil games like for example the programming behind it and what usually happens behind the scenes and have a great day!

The fact that they ground every zombie in a room would make them a nice tool for scooting through the really highly populated rooms.

Wow, I used it correctly without knowing that. Its like created for Tyrant fight. A nice detail it doesn't work against T-Veronica virus. Another trick you can use is BOW round plus knife combo, everybody know how OP knife is in CV. One BOW round and you can use knife against that zombie horde in 1:53 or dogs in 6:30 . Maybe another BOW round knife combo against Grave Digger, there are new possibilities.

Great video Kai!!! i think you should also do it for almost all the guns that might have interesting facts and tips since when i want to know how to kill certain boss from any of the games i have to look for a walktrought from a REspeedrunner skip all the gameplay to just watch that part having issues since sometimes it's not as well explained as you did, hope to see more like this

Well in classic RE2 they did explain that P-Epsilon gas weakens cell structures of B.O.W. but prolonged exposure has caused some of them to develop a resistance to the gas, and some even gets nutrients from it, like that overgrown plant in the shaft of the underground research facility I guess only 3 rounds make sense. It was all supposed to be used on Tyrant (or the completely optional worm fight in the courtyard) You were never meant to take it to the 2nd half of the game (unless you need an easier time to defeat the worm as Chris) 9 handgun rounds is a bit too wasteful (and slow), 1 explosive arrow is enough for the catapult to finish it. Then again, if you went through the trouble of hacking extra gas rounds in, you can do the same with explosive arrows, then you won't need the gas rounds at all when you have what is essentially a rapid fire rocket launcher
@ChocolatierRob2 жыл бұрын
Huh, I'll have to try this. My normal plane strategy is to save the explosive bolts and step forwards a pace to change the camera angle then and unload 26 bolts before it gets near and slam the button. Quick and safe but expensive and costs the time to gather the boom bolts in the first place.

It is a good concept to help players having difficulty blaze through certain impossibly hard situations. I feel like this carried over to RE onwards, where in Re 4 it would be the rocket launcher. The gas rounds are a much better alternative as it is too easy to buy the rocket launcher in 4.

I find it interesting that it doesn't affect the spiders or Nostratu which are both poison type enemies which might give a hint to what the gas is made out of since animals that are poisonous are immune to their own toxins.

They should ABSOLUTELY bring them back. They are my favorite ammo ever, and add so much intrigue to the game. Years into the future, people are still fascinated and investigate the optimal use of the ammunition type.

The B.O.W. Gas Grenade Rounds are 40mm grenade rounds whose warheads are filled with the same P-Epsilon Anti B.O.W. Gas used in the B.O.W. gas sprinkler system of the lab in RE2. Thankfully there's no evolved Lickers in Code Veronica that can become stronger due to prolonged exposure to it.

Wait so it's basically the gas from RE2 you can release in the Umbrella lab? Neat.
@SPIKEYROXAS2 жыл бұрын
My theory is that the rounds were made specifically for that fight but didnt want to specifically say so to avoid spoilers of the upcoming fight. And from a lore point of view the rounds were made as a counter for already existing BOWs known by the research team under alfreds order which and as to not have any weapons available to directly hurt his family these were manufactured in a way to not harm them which is why alexia and alexander are not affecred by them.

It would be interesting to have an overly how they affect the hp in terms of game memory. If they halve hp i’d guess they just bit shift until they can’t anymore? Maybe there’s a multiplier for enemy types that determines the hp then? Would be interesting to see if they could be misused in some fun way to bit shift something else, that you flag as an “enemy” somehow.
@blango-san2 жыл бұрын
In Claire's battle game you can't win against Tyrant without B.O.W. gas rounds. The plane Tyrant fight can be easily won without using them entirely - just find all the explosive arrows and save them for the plane fight (start with the box, fire all rounds, finish with another box). B.O.W gas rounds go well with the first Tyrant encounter.

Ill have to try the gas rounds out on tyrant! I usually just make sure I get 30 explosive bow gun rounds for that fight and just shoot all 30 standing right at the door then turn hit the panel and fight over in less than 1 min lol.

I remember doing that one achievement that requires only after the plane crash, and no first aids. I got all the way to the final boss, and took me so long to I was at danger literally one hit from dying at the the timer was at 00.00.02 I wished I recorded it, because I never reacted so crazy for a video game

I think ammunition is overlooked in general. Ironic too as it is arguably the most important thing about a gun, without it, the gun is a metal bat at best and paperweight/door stopper at worst.

Very good research and well explained video but at 4:11 - When u said: ,,The most notoriously difficult boss battle in Code Veronica..." Ahhhhhh excuse me! 🤨 Tyrant can be terminated easily by using arrows combined with B.O.W. Gun powder and u need to use 24 shoots on him and then using the catapult machine and he's dead! The whole Tyrant fight won't last 15 seconds with this strategy! Wait a minute!: At 6:07 You shoot Alexia with B.O.W. gas rounds twice as well and nothing happens??? 😱😱😱 - That's very absurd since originally you shoot her with only one handgun bullet and she starts her 2nd transformation straight away! LOL! In my opinion the B.O.W. gas rounds are not big deals, usually I use them at first Tyrant battle so I can save lot of grenade rounds for myself for further enemies!

I learned from first hand experience the ins & outs of this game. Back when I was a kid. Didnt have alot of money or systems. Did happen to have a ps2 but not many games. I always loved RE. I would play & re play Veronica and progress further each play through. I learned that re tends to do things like that. As in. Giving you special rounds for a boss. Way too early. Fun game.
@Grizzlytactics912 жыл бұрын
you have no idea how much that explains for me lol ever since i played through CV as a kid id wonder why everyone said the tyrant fight was so hard. it was never too hard for me at all. now i know why. im always low on ammo before the tyrant fight so i am forced to used the bow rounds, i avoided them because i didnt understand them but wow ive been using them right the whole time.. i almost think it would be better to use them on the worm however

Cool video. Since you were using an emulator, I'm surprised you didn't view enemy health in memory (trivial to do in this case) to see exactly what's going on. There's always been RNG in some form that makes tests like this kind of hard to narrow down, so having the actual numbers to look at would have made it way more concrete. That being said, I didn't actually know what they did when I was a kid lol, I liked the cool effect when I was younger but figured they were some kind of AOE stun or minimal room-wide damage. Really neat to see that they do have practicality for certain fights. Thanks for the RECV content!

After finding out about the knife actually being a kick ass weapon and the BOW rounds now, Code Veronica is a much easier game from an ammo management standpoint. It feels like a natural progression of the Classic RE games. You start off struggling and scared, low on everything, but the more you learn about the games you end up like a kick ass action hero on your 5th playthrough. There should have been an unlockable file you can find that explains these things tho, at least after you beat the game once or in battle mode.
