I still love the drama. I love evan lin in this drama although he is only 2nd male lead. I love the friendship and the chemistry of the leads. The men are just eye candies in their military uniform. So all in all i was fully entertained watching it.

An idol romance drama set in ROC, is like an idol romance drama set in WW1 or WW2 Poland when it was occupied by Nazi Germany. Like……Yeah. Ok. Sure. Not cringy or offensive at all🥲 Edit: I also don’t think it’s very romantic or sweet to date a military marshal or warlord. A lot of them have massive BODY COUNTS at 4, 5, 6+ digits. Some of them are still good people, but some others are…really not. They can really take the “bad boy” type to a whole next level. It’s just too much for me lol

You know, it is really interesting that you mention that. I am a Polish librarian and I can definitely say that there is a peticular genre of romance novels set against the backdrop of WWII in Poland and it's sometimes called "hol***ust harlequin". It is relatively popular. The most known example may be "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Heather Morris. I don't fully undertstand this phenomen but... it kind of exist XD

I had already watched the first 14 episodes before listening to your critique. It's definitely not a show that is trying to win awards, lol, it's more fan service than anything. It has enjoyable moments, smart leads (even if the plot itself may be dumb or focuses too much on romance), cute faces, and a decent soundtrack. I'm fine with it, lol, although because it's Republican era, I feel like most characters are gonna die. Also, I'm watching it mostly for chen xingxu. He was fantastic in Goodbye My Princess and now he gets to do a less serious drama 🙌🏼 so I'm happy for him 😂

My grandparents lived in this shitty era and they barely survived. My grandfather ate tree bark to survive. not to mention the constant threat of airplane attacks from the Japanese. the air raid siren still lives fresh in their memories as well as the rush of adrenaline it comes with. they used to talk about it a lot. much more so when we watch films or shows set in this era. life was very rough.

The drama lost me at the filter… Chen Xingxu, Zhang Jingyi, and Lin Yanjun (an idol, no less) are like the prettiest people in Chinese show biz, and the filter somehow manages to “uglify” them by blurring their features. And yes, the CVs take me out of the drama right away. It’s like Wen Kexing and A’Xiang are having an incestuous affair! It doesn’t help that Zhang Jingyi looks so similar to Zhou Ye (who plays A’Xiang).

I find it hard to distinguish between the ML and his two friends. They all look alike, although this might be due to the fact that all their faces are the same washed out colour. Apart from all that, I am very much enjoying the villains. Mainly because I like the ML. I feel that this part could have been written for him. The FL is boring to the extreme. This is the only drama I think I have seen her in. She is supposed to be this red-hot business woman, but I find her boring. Anyway, I am hanging out for the next episode, so that might mean something.

I love Chen XinXu since Goodbye My Princess and... I did hope that this drama will be one of the best Cdrama this year... I did it is indeed very (I hope will never be upgraded to "extremely") ridiculous and I wonder what's in the writer's mind when he wrote this. But, I will continue to watch this one too, enjoying how good-looking the cast is. I just hope I still can be interested to watch it to the end and no more scenes which will trigger my criminal intention to kill both the writer and director

Chen Xingxu is actually commonly praised by the Chinese audience for his good look. A lot of people say that they can’t hate his character in Goodbye My Princess because of how handsome he looks. But anyway, I don’t like this drama (first of all, the heavy filter really irritates me, because it blurs out and alters the handsome/beautiful faces of the main cast). But no complaint against the actors themselves. I know they all can act. They’re probably just under a bad director who cannot direct acting. I still look forward to their future works.

I binge watched the first 14 episodes but only because I have a soft spot for Chen Xing Xu. Not (only) because he is handsome (even those filters cannot destroy it :)), but because of his acting. I really like his range and he is still so very young. Gong Dong I watched also only because of him. He is one of the best young actors who can play charming bad boy so well. And I am happy that this time he has role wise an equal FL and this actress does OK job too. All other things are crap indeed. PS! I hope he can get more serious roles in the future, let that charming bad boy not become his actor trap.

I love this drama a lot! The actors are not stiff and have great chemistry. Plus the FL is smart. I have the same thoughts about 2nd ML's & friends F4 scene while they're walking at the train station. Also, wondering why 2nd ML's hair is the only one that's not gelled up. I really feel sorry for Chen and hope that he could be more selective in his future projects. Yes, actors need exposures but a lousy production would do more harm than good to the actors' career.

If the voices weren't dubbed I guess this series might be enjoyable as a kind of "pulp" fantasy story. I think many producers simply choose the Min Guo setting in order to avoid the strict censorship that they would face if they set their stories in the PRC.

It’s not censorship. In fact, there’s more to censor in ROC stories because you have to be careful with depicting history (e.g. how to depict nationalists relative to communists). Authors/dramas choose ROC as the background either for aesthetic reasons (uniforms and cheongsams) or the tragic historical setting plays into the story. There’s a saying that “nine out of ten stories set in ROC are tragedies,” since it’s hard to find individual happiness when the entire country is war-torn. It’s not that different from stories set in WWII, such as Testament of Youth or Atonement. That’s why it is just WEIRD that this drama is a rom com set in ROC!

Agree with everything you said hahaha the actors all look stunning but omg i could not finish the first episode bc of the logic of the plot 🤦‍♀️😂 like girl been in the same room in the ship for probably over a day. How the hail do you not remember the location or double check other room numbers? And how can two strangers both coincidentally have suitcases that look the same? What also got me was when FL and SML didn’t recognize each other. It was only until she successfully gets away from ML’s handcuffs then they meet again… i was like you guys didn’t recognize each other in the freaking elevator??? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 3/4 into the first episode only and I called it quits LOL I’ll probably just check on some clips but thats it.

Actually after watching dramas like The rebel, battle of changsha, even arsenal military academy this drama is totally like a joke but I ignored all these mistakes and consider it as a "Fantasy Republic Era Drama" . Actually people as well as me watching this drama because it also fullfill our dreamy demands like funny but intelligent main lead, strong and bossy female lead and also our crash mr Evan lin. And of a lots of couple 👫 with incoming happy ending. So overall despite this drama breaks all the rules of republic era, we still watching it and waiting for next episodes 😀.

Probably the most forceful and rude ML I've seen in the first few episodes. It's very unrealistic of the way she reacted to the way she was treated. She witnessed him murdering a woman and then he locked her in the room a few min after. Then he pretty much kidnapped her...all while she acted so very calmly like "oh you know, just the usual"

I do agree the technical part are not well done. Choppy editing with striking filters. Action scenes also are not so good with awkward acting. But I can ignore all those, it’s bearable. Why? Because of very interesting plot. Very rare for main characters in chinese historical drama, that actually “lead” and drive the plot. ML and FL are consistently smart and cunning from the first episode until now. We got to see many good productions but the plot and FL characters are meh. Give it try, it does worth!

I haven't watched it yet but i really do love period dramas/movies from any country set in 20th century. And since it is fictional I don't think they have to be accurate since even most of biological/historical movies aren't accurate. Sometimes I just want to feel those vibes or feel like I am not in real world, like I am in these dramas like the feeling while i'm reading a book. And I also really like looking the clothing, the scenes, the decorations, the cinematography etc. It is like a theme or concept. And most of the time I don't want to watch a very dramatic or tense dramas I really love to see a light, comfort themes too in period times. So I become happy when I see a new Republican Drama. Maybe I won't like those dramas, maybe I will found some plots stupid but the idea of Republican Era Drama is intriguing itself.

I've started watching it. I'm 5 episodes in. But I'm enjoying it solely for the chemistry between the leads and their characterization so far. I have very sparse knowledge of Chinese history, language, or dubbing voices so it's enjoyable thus far. The filter affects, the filter is the main problem of china drama. If you use the right filter, the atmosphere of the past will be more pronounced, as will make-up. Pay attention to trends in the past and what happened in the past are also included in the story to make it more related, including tragedies, news, food brands, TV shows, radio, etc. (I appreciate Korean dramas because they can do this, I can always feel the past atmosphere in korean drama, Korean Drama are almost always accurate even if sometime not to)

@@minjilover Pls don't say that... It's just hard to find romance drama that has such a unique settings...plus I'm not a Chinese person so I'm not that sensitive..😅 Also compared to modern Chinese drama, I think fall in love is a lot better.. I don't get cringe a lot watching it :)

@@annaliseh9727 hahas might as well go for early Taiwanese idol/romcom? They still stand the time and stories are relatively good. Totally not criticizing you, just saying maybe you are numb to it since there are increasingly more illogical romcoms in recent years.

Love love love this drama. I totally agree with your initial recommendations however the tongue in cheak humour is addictive. Eye candy helps considerably but totally agree with your critic. I appreciate that it is a comedy and sooo not true to your history BUT it is enjoyable and different. Love your podcasts hi from Ireland

If I was not doing my doctoral work in nutrition education, I would soooooo have a decent dissertation idea by now! lol! On another note, one of my pet peeves (as an amateur costume enthusiast) with the “Republican”-era dramas is the completely inaccurate Western clothing (I’m talking about you Lady & Liar-bow ties were NOT clip on in those days!!!!). I will say that while this one is also relatively inaccurate, at least the hemlines of the Western dresses are more appropriate that what I’ve seen before (well below the knee). (Examples: In Cage of Love the nurses at the hospital wore above the knee skirts!!! In The Mystic Nine, a Japanese spy actually wore a mini skirt!). To be fair, however, I’m sure there are blatant inaccuracies in other historial dramas, I’m just less familiar with what is appropriate to those eras.

LMAO i agree🤭 its almost like a parody. Im continuing it cause the leads are freaking pretty, i threw logic down the drain after ML tried to hide the body under the bed 😆. 2nd ML is freaking useless and i feel like they just made him like that so as to push people to ship ML and FL together. and Yanjun was the reason i started the drama 🥲
