Man how I wish JOLED would take off for the mainstream monitor market. QDOLED has potential but the biggest issue is the crappy triangle subpixel layout that ruins it for monitors.

@@lennylennington No, I don't think so as they are likely targeting gamers with such high refresh rate. The panels should be cheaper to produce than JOLED's RGB panels (used in the monitor in this review) due to yields and economies of scale. My guess is below $2000 USD at launch.

I know it’s really difficult nowadays to figure out which TVs or monitors can unofficially be 1000 Nits consistently or whatever resolution and Hz frame rate as well, but here’s my take, with every environmental standard and guidelines changing every year, it’s makes it very hard to find anything available or produce a product that can make requirement or benchmarks. Because we don’t have to technology down yet, we can make them but basically we are in the “beta stages” of all these features. For example, the 8k TVs out now aren’t truly native 8k, they still only are capable of 4K 120hz. For true 8k to be achieved, the hdmi ports and source have to output minimally 96gbps of data, which the current stuff only output 48gbps max, which is only sustain consistently 8k 24hz max what we call “UHD enhanced”. The panels are 8k, but the “brains and tech are still a little behind”. And with hdr, they are trying to find the sweet spot to obtain true HDR without the devices either overheated or burning out. The pandemic threw a wrench on a lot of things when it comes to progress, And with the EU epa person dropping the gavel on energy standards. It’s gonna take a a little longer before we see some stuff. Patience is key.

no one is really asking for 8k+ except VR headset makers. also energy standards only apply to default out of box display modes. the real limiter for HDR is that companies had problems making 10bit native color depth LCD. much less 8bit+FRC and no reliable way to distribute MiniLED on a substaight. though things are about to change because the chemistry has improved to the level we can inkjet print a OLED or MicroLED display. plus things can be made brighter with no extra heat or power cost using Micro Lens Arrays.

@@derekspecht6323 TCL already did and should have products out next year. samsung is partially using inkjet printing for QD-OLED. they are also developing a Gallium Nitride blue OLED to replace the short lived Phosphor ones they currently have. still TCL has the advantage since they will be using a standard pixel layout. then you have LG who are stuck with old manufacturing methods but 1st to use MLAs.

Maybe I'm an idiot but why would the dark screens trigger autodimming? Surely the TV should realise that everything is dark there and so not trigger it? Or are the algorithms much more stupid than that and concentrate on what the peak brightness could have been based on the HDR configuration, even if it isn't even close to being reached?

There is an OLED version of Sony Reference Mastering Monitor that is called BVM-X300 V2 that is also 4K HDR. You should make your TV reviews, comparison videos using that one instead. And what about Panasonic's Reference Mastering Monitors? How fare do they against the BVM-HX310. You should make a comparison between the BVM-HX310 with the Panasonic's equivalent LCD Reference Monitor and between the BVM-X300 V2 with the Panasonic's best 4K OLED Reference Monitor.

4:16 This is actually awesome to see. So many HDR displays will hit some nutty peak brightness and then fail to achieve anything remotely similar at 50%, which I regard to be the rough average % for HDR gaming. This can result, and does (THANKS MICROSOFT), in blown out detail without display-side tonemapping DESPITE the peak brightness being set correctly in game. HWUB's Neo G8 would do 1188 nits 10% but only 572 nits 50%, and a minimum of 320 nits 100%. HWUB's PG32UQX by contrast, would do 1742 nits 10% and a diminished (and therefore still problematic) but still impressive 1225 nits at 50%-100%.

Nearly all of my games have blown out highlights at around 1000 nits, despite using a PG32UQX that ranges from 800 nits at 100% to 1565 nits at 10%. Regardless, if Windows allowed displays to tonemap like consoles do, I wouldn't be complaining right now.

@@helloguy8934 I never said they did. The handshake between Windows and Monitor isn't working properly, causing display-side tonemapping to fail. Games should be set at 3500 nits on my unit, as they are on console, but on Windows any value above 800 on my unit can be blown out at a high enough window size.

I recently purchased this monitor and I am very impressed. But I do have a question, I was checking out the user profiles (Just to test the calibration on them) and I am noticing what looks like color banding/artifacts on them, both of them actually no matter how I calibrate it. None of the other profiles have this issue, and I've already done a calibration on the rec 709 profile which pre and post cal looks great and has no artifacts. Curious about what you think should be done?

The PA32DC bring nothing new compared to the LG 32EP950 / 32BP95E which came out almost 2 years ealier. The LG already sustained 500+ nits at 50% window size, there are enough reviews out there that demonstrate it. And the "Uniform Brightness ON" is simply going back to SDR mode ... Let see what the PA32DCM could actually bring with the new JOLED panel.

My guess is it will apply to displays sold for commercial use, such as standby energy saving features in enterprise scenarios and possibly retail signage/kiosks etc. Maybe also they shift the consumer efficiency rating scale to reflect the fact CFL backlights aren't a thing anymore

It only affects the "out of the box" default setting (the eye searing 'demo/vivid' mode used to compete on store shelves). So by default TVs will come with a better out of the box experience. People just leave the demo/vivid mode on all the time from day 1, which is dumb

I love this channel and I need help from tech gurus like you all. I have a 3080 since a while but using an old samsung 65 inch that's giving me basic HDR+ 60hz . It's been acceptable for my pc gaming needs but I am currently shopping for a 65-85 monitor that would allow me to do 120hz and perhaps gsync ? I know about the LGC1 and C2 as those are pretty expensive but what would you guys recommend for cybermonday or black friday or boxing day to replace this aging tv. I have noticed that tv makers are upping their quality and just would like a bang for my buck. What are the best new models that are 65-85inch 120hz gsync to allow my 3080 to use hdmi 2.1 finally ?

Vincent, I have a technical question I'm hoping you can answer. I recently plugged a sound bar into my eArc port of the LG c1. I immediately noticed when gaming on my Xbox series x the picture became clearer,more detailed, smoother. Is it bc one HDMI cable is handling picture & the other one sound, so they each have more bandwidth available to transmit information? It was the only possibility I could think of but I'm not an expert. I would like to hear your thoughts and may make an interesting topic for a video

Used to apple's displays that can do 1000nits full screen and 1600nits peak, less than 300 full screen and 500 max just doesn't feel like HDR anymore. And those tiny hoods on these monitors are a joke, they may help minimally with directly over head light, but that light will be bouncing from all the walls making the hood useless. You need one of those long funnel-like hoods with a small viewing window.

This is why I am still not interested in OLED. A good OLED picture is like a photograph from a high-end camera, but it just doesn’t have that sense of “being there” that a top quality LED TV can produce. LED’s ability to produce, and MAINTAIN very high peak brightness makes all the difference. Most TV experts have been saying (rightly) for a long time now that of the UHD technologies, HDR has more of an effect upon overall picture quality than 4K resolution does. Given that, I think that among the factors that affect HDR quality, peak brightness has more of an effect than other factors like percentage of total color space, for example. Sony talked about this for years, at least until they began pushing OLEDs as well. They explained the importance of not just color space, but color VOLUME. Color space is 2-dimensional, but color volume takes advantage of the ability to produce high peak brightness to not only produce a lot of colors, but also a much larger number of luminance values for those colors, expanding the overall color palette. I’ve seen plenty of examples of both technologies, and I’ll take NITs over “perfect blacks” every time. And that doesn’t even include the still remaining (though admittedly better) issues with OLED burn-in and the fact that even OLEDs are not entirely immune to blooming, due to how our eyes work.

OLEDS are initially impressive in the same way that vivid mode impresses some when they first get their new TV home, but their lack of peak brightness (which is getting better, but still nowhere near where it needs to be) leaves an OLED picture looking impressive, but a bit artificial to me. The deep blacks are nice, and per-pixel lighting is certainly where we all want TV technology to go, but the best LEDs have blacks that are very good (and ironically often have better shadow detail than OLEDS…color volume again) and their ability to reproduce the subjective feeling of “being there” is unmatched by OLED. HDR is where it’s at, and there’s no question that for the best HDR you need high peak brightness and the ability to sustain it without OLED’s additional flaw of dimming over time. The magic of HDR comes from blinding specular highlights that make outdoor scenes feel similar to real life, and the luminance headroom to expand the volume of colors available in lower-light scenes. Gravity looks great on OLED, I’ll give you that, but OLED’s “one weird trick” just isn’t as versatile as the ability to reproduce a broader volume of colors and to mimic real life lighting.

That´s a "new" thing only applicable to oleds. The fact i also mentioned colour uniformity should´ve tipped you i wasn´t talking about what you thought off. Have you never seen a proper display review (in written or video form)? Luma or brightness uniformity: is the brightness distribution across the display even? How big are the brightness deviations relative to the center of the display? Chroma or colour uniformity: how big are the colour deviations across the display relative to its center? Get it?
