When I left Yokosuka Japan as US Navy MP I bought a Jeep Wrangler . I took possession of it in Greenville South Carolina . After two weeks driving it around Spartanburg I and another sailor drove it from South Carolina to Long Beach CA . I parked it in the Long Beach Naval parking lot until I returned six months later after a deployment .

I’ve been driving in the states for 24 years now and I still find it stressful when I fly to a different state and have to drive in a hire car. When I was back in England in summer 2019 and was driving a manual for the first time since 2008 I had a hard time LOL as I didn’t realise I had to lift the gear stick knob in order to move the gear stick into reverse. When I last drove a manual in England I pushed the gear stick down as putting it into reverse. That was stressful!!

The oversized tires have a hard time tracking straight on the pavement. They also are throwing off the speedometer. The speedometer is calibrated to the stock tires.
@Biggolfdog
@Biggolfdog 2 жыл бұрын
This Jeep Wrangler is happier off the pavement than on. It's takes a while to get used to the oversized tires. It's the wide treads that are making the loud noise on the pavement and these aren't well insulated for road noise. Also, it looks like it was built for the mountain trails, foothills and desert areas. I have to give it to you for attempting this drive in a vehicle that you're not familiar with and the distance traveled that you're not used to.

chari326 - and others - My only experience with 'Jeeps', are of Willies', meaning the WWII version, as seen in 'Mash', which of course, was about the Korean war. For a while, back in the '70s, I was a bit of a cowboy (but not really), yet driving a Willy around the purple sage mountains around Ojai, California, watching the Condors and rattlesnakes and keeping the bears from the honey pots. It was pretty cool, and I actually owned one for a few years,, later, back in New York, and as well, I've had a few friends who had 'modern' versions of Jeeps, but I don't think they really count. What I do remember, tho, is that the stick shift of a Jeep Willie, was the exact one of any school bus, of that era. Kind of cool when you think of it, one so large, one so small, but with the same transmission.

@@loosilu A Jeep with a solid roof would have been better insulated, but a car like a Nissan Altima or a lower crossover vehicle of some kind like a Nissan Rogue would have been easier to handle with less pushing by any wind gusts. I hate Wranglers, but when I was younger I loved my Jeep Cherokee. It was 5-speed manual transmission with a proper truck shifter in the floor, and it got close to 40mpg on the highway. It wasn't nearly as comfy on long trips as my current sports sedan, but it'snice to sit higher for visibility. Lia needs to select a car for a road trip in the US by comfort, mpg and size next time. Jepp Wranglers are for OFF ROAD driving not for Road Trips.
@RealzFoSho
@RealzFoSho 2 жыл бұрын
Wind could definitely push around a Wrangler, but even without wind there are a few factors that create a significant ride comfort difference on normal roadways for the Wrangler versus a vehicle designed for normal everyday on-pavement commutes. Wranglers have a short wheel base and a high ride height (made even higher with aftermarket upgrades). Both increase cab movement, giving a ride that is rougher than a normal vehicle on the highway. They also have a stiffer suspension which can drastically affect ride comfort, allowing you to "feel the road" a lot more than a normal car. On off-road, which the Wrangler is designed for, the higher height gives more clearance and the shorter wheelbase decreases the chances of bottoming the vehicle out on uneven terrain. The stiffer suspension prevents bouncing so the vehicle has a lower risk of damage when terrain height changes.

I'm only part way in, but your driving experience in America is very authentic, with that truck all over the lane. 😅 Jeeps don't have good sound insulation from the road. And the wheel wouldn't stay straight because if you go fast off road (previous renters) it messes up the ability to go perfectly straight down a road without touching the steering wheel. Also it sounds windy, depending on wind conditions you have to fight a wrangler to stay on the road. Especially here in Kansas where the winds get like 40-70 miles an hour. 😂❤ Rent a smaller car (chevy cruze) or a more comfortable car (like a dodge challenger or ford taurus) and you'll have a completely different experience. Except with people swerving, that's everywhere. 😅

As a Jeep driver I can empathize with some of your problems, I have a 97 2 door that used to be fatiguing to drive but got better after I changed the seats out to newer units ....Jeep's are never quiet but they are fun to explore with and take the tops off of when exploring,I use mine plenty for that out here in Colorado when exploring old mines and mountain passes!

It’s part of the Jeep cred having it a bit harder to drive makes you part of the experience and connection. They totally are loud because the roof comes off. Once it’s been off never seals again. I’m with you guys though I’d like less connection with the “drive”

Part, but not all, of the problem is the aftermarket tires that got put on it. They where of enough difference that the speedometer is off so it's going to have an effect on the handling too.

We have a 4 door Wrangler and it is one of our smallest vehicles (about the same size as our Lexus GX). Going from either to the 3/4 ton Crew Cab pickup takes a little adjustment, but lots of adjustment needed for the 42' motor coach (8.5 feet wide).

Jeeps were wartime transportation for officers and others to go where ever needed in what ever weather. It is an all terrain vehicle that has been upgraded. It is meant for going off road. Most of the new models should drive just like a car--sounds like your vehicle was not put right from the last driver and had either suspension problems or a wheel alignment need. Your drive to Asheville wouldnt need this kind of vehicle--an SUV might have suited your needs better--roomy but comfy and quiet. A Cadillac SUV is a good drive.

Driving tip/how to stay in the lane: measure the drivers side of the car to the lane you're in. don't let the steering wheel align towards the middle of the lane or past the middle. if that happens, steer back. realign the steering wheel to the left most side of the lane. Steering wheel aligned with middle of lane= you're still fine but try and keep to the left most side past middle(right side)= too far. realign.

The reason you got 3 Billboards vibes was because the movie was shot about 45 mins-1hr wesr of Asheville. In Jackson County, in a small town named Sylva. It's a beautiful place! Plenty of small breweries and shops. As well as the lovely campus of Western Carolina University (my Alma Mater). Next time you go to the mountains driver and visit Waynesville, Cullowhee, Cherokee (Casino), Franklin and Bryson City! There is way more in Western NC.

I own an old jeep wrangler. It's great for short commutes, bad weather, and off road driving; but road trips are extremely stressful. Also, north Carolina interstates are no joke. I just went on a short day trip from Norfolk VA, to Charlotte NC via I85, and was going 90mph, the whole time I was on that road, and bairly kept up with traffic.

Total credit for even trying to drive in another country on what for you is the wrong side of the road. I'm so sad you don't like the Jeep. Honestly when I owned a Jeep, it was the best driving I ever had. You got to do it with the top and doors completely off though.

You look good in a Jeep, Joel! It's certainly the oversized tires and sports package that makes it less comfortable to drive. It's not designed to be a luxurious drive, but kinda fun to drive.

Would be great to see you rent a wrangler and put it to full use…off-roading of some kind lol. It’s the best! I’ve rented a couple, went to The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, drove through the sand pit (got stuck for not going fast enough, luckily had help to push it out), drove through the Sangre De Cristo mountain range…those cars could handle a lot! And to say that a Wrangler is not “luxury” smh lol.

A jeep is not just an off-road vehicle, they are built for extreme off-road. Modern vehicles have very precision steering, but in an extreme off road vehicle that kind of steering would be damaged by rutts and logs while off-roading and the steering wheel could be knocked out of your grip. So jeeps and other extreme off-road vehicles have extra play or drift in the steering which makes them more easy to control off-road, but also means they require more control on the highway. Great for rock climbing, not ideal for long highway trips. However if you off-road regularly and use it as your daily driver, it becomes normal for you and is no longer uncomfortable. But it can be jarring for someone who is not use to that kind of vehicle. Love your channel. Hope the rest of your trip is great.

Now that you've seen where a Jeep doesn't fit, try the 2 places it fits best. Low country mudding and trail riding in the hills/mountains. And go see a hill climb or rock bouncer race. Then you'll see what off road performance can be.

Love it! "Driven across America." Some people commute further than that daily. But I understand that was a long haul for you guys. Next road trip get something that's a better road car. That Jeep is a bit of a "poser" car for looking cool tooling around town or off road.

Duckpin Bowling and Libations -- Duckpins is a different kind of bowling--Give it a try. Smaller ball and pins then tenpins and much more difficult (three balls per frame). Still popular in Baltimore/DC area but apparently no one makes any parts needed to maintain the lanes. There is another small ball game in New England called Candlepins
