What I love about physical media is that everyone has their own completely unique collection. Not only are the films within the collection different depending on each person's tastes, but the versions of each film. Seeing your Halloween films there; I've got a steelbook of 1, Scream slipcover of 2 & 3, regular American versions of 4 & 5 (but customized with the addition of the bonus disc from the Scream boxset) and the version of 6 from the boxset. It's my own bespoke collection of Halloween based on what I wanted to get and there's something very satisfying about that.

I find the Scream Factory slips to be very flimsy and absolute magnets for shelf wear. Often they do t survive retail without getting chewed up. I remove all the slips, throw them in a box in the closet, and the discs look better than they did with them on. It’s a real shame.

Thanks Jeff. I remember watching Romero's Dawn of the Dead at my friend's house on his parents' front projection screen (like the one Lex Luther had in Superman the Movie) in the early 80's when we were in junior high school. I remember thinking what a unique, bizarre and funny film this was. I especially liked the scenes showing the chaos and breakdown of civilization in the beginning of the movie with the ominous bass heavy soundtrack in the background.

I picked up a sealed unsolved mysteries ultimate collection(the one from from 2006) 7 years ago for 100 dollars. It’s now going for 1300.00 sealed on amazon. I never got around to opening it, my girlfriend suggested opening it and watching some during this quarantine period, I was extremely quick to shut her down. Had to explain to her why. Funny this video comes out a few days later.

There is a small collectible niche, but, it's hard to predict what titles will be worth $$$. 2 big things that make a title worth some big money is when a title goes out of print or when a title is recalled by the studio. Great example of an out of print title is the Friday the 13th box set shown in this video. The studio usually doesn't announce the title going OOP & you gotta scramble to try & get your hands on a copy at the MSRP. What's a bigger deal than a title going OOP is when a title is recalled by the studio. This can happen for a number of reasons. Three cases that come to mind is Little Shop Of Horrors, This Is Spinal Tap, & the Wes Craven film Swamp Thing. Little Shop, & Spinal Tap were released on blu-ray w/o the directors consent & when this happens, the director of each film filed a junction w/ the studio, making the studios recall all copies. This causes any purchased copies to become instant collectibles. The case w/ Swamp Thing was MGM used a European interpositive of the movie, when they pressed the film on DVD. The problem was nudity in the film (boob shots), The U.S. print had no nudity & was rated PG. Once a soccer mom complained to Blockbuster Video about the movie, Blockbuster sent an email to MGM/UA & got the title pulled from shelves. Be forewarned that the studios can fix all of these issues & re-release the titles at a future date.

I'm quite proud that most of my purchases are limited editions. Not necessarily expensive boxset, but slip covers are often limited, sometimes booklets or reversable covers, bonus discs etc. Lots of releases are limited and it is quite satisfying owning them due to the fact that you have it, you don't need to worry about missing out in future.
@ralphjenkins6291
@ralphjenkins6291 4 жыл бұрын
You should pay attention to announcements and rumors about rereleases, because if a movie is rereleased, the old disc often loses value (because demand goes down). My Twilight Time edition of Leave Her to Heaven was worth around $90 until it was released by Criterion. So you do need to know when to sell. Collecting movies isn’t the best investment, because the number that increase in value are greatly outnumbered by the ones that only drop in value as they sit on your shelf collecting dust. The good thing about a movie collection is that you can watch and enjoy them.

I don't have anything mind-blowing, but I have a lot of movies whose price has risen 2-4X (or more) due to going out of print. Examples: _-The Ringu Collection_ Arrow Video box set. Bought it for about $60 brand new when it came out. Now, used copies are selling for $120-$150 on Amazon/Ebay. _-Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Shinya Tsukamoto_ Arrow Video box set. Bought it for $75 last year, and it's already gone up to $150+ on sites like Amazon and Ebay. _-Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza Collection_ box set. Bought it for $65 new back in 2015. Now, it seems to sell for anywhere between $120-$200 on average based on Ebay and Amazon listings. -The _Phantasm Sphere Collection_ that came out a while back. I think I paid like $75 for it? And now it's going for $150+ on Ebay. -Some of my out-of-print Shout! Factory titles (Ex. _Species II, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Poltergeist II/III,_ etc.) that I got for $20-$25 new are now selling for $100+ used apiece online depending on the site and seller. I've even seen one or two of my titles listed for as high as $200. -I also have the Scream Factory _Halloween_ Deluxe Box Set, which I paid less than $80 for literally right before it went out of print. I've routinely seen it listed for $300-$500+ now. However, my box came scuffed up pretty bad, and the copy of _Halloween H20_ was damaged and won't play properly, so I think mine wouldn't go for that much. I'm sure I could sell the remaining films for a decent profit, though. (Not that I would. I don't plan on selling any of these, since I bought them specifically to own them. Maybe if a better edition comes out down the line...) I did end up getting a stand-alone Blu-Ray of _H20_ just so I had all the movies, but it's still a little annoying since it doesn't have all the extra content from the Scream Factory disc.

My blu-ray collection isn't huge but the most valuable one I own is my BD of the anime Space Runaway Ideon. It goes for a couple hundred dollars with the highest sold listing being $550.

The Hellraiser box set not only holds some value due to it be limited, but also because up until that release there was no official bluray of Hell On Earth in the US. They were all imports or bootlegs. I purchased that set for this reason alone. Totally random, but check out the value of Willow with the slipcover. In the hundreds for something that originally cost, at most, $15 when it was first pressed. Nice video - do more!

I need to check the value of some of my collection. I know the Trilogia de Guillermo Del Toro Criterion goes for around $200 and I have a Media Blasters Destroy All Monsters worth at least $100. I got those Bruce Lee's for $5 each at Walmart few years back and then got extras at Dollar Tree for $1 each. (No slips and gave away as gifts).

Shout Factory also released the four Bruce Lee movies individually for a short time after the compilation set with much better transfers (4K scans and proper color correction) and even more extras. I hope Criterion will use those scans because they are beautiful.

I collect movies...... I dont sell them. The movies are my favoriet and i watch them when i am in the mood. There are movies that started as a VHS and are now blu-ray, like all my Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Charles Bronson , Jackie Chan and many more) . Every few years come actors in my collection and new movies that i like and stay. My collection is about 3000 movies but can be more, i dont count them every year. Greetings from the Netherlands.

The most valuable Blu-ray in my collection is actually a box set. The Scream Factory Friday The 13th set. Whenever there's a convention in my area involving Kane Hodder, I might try to ask him to sign it. (At one point, this set was worth $400. It's worth like $100 now. Not gonna even think of selling it.

I have Mondo X A Quiet Place 4K(unopened) and a regular copy for me to enjoy. 1917 steelbook, Joker steelbook, and Venom steelbook Art Project edition which are no longer available as far as I know. I've been keeping an eye out for Mondo X copies and now, I'll watch for Arrow video copies.

I’ve seen a lot of titles reach crazy high prices, and like you, I’m not looking to sell. Back in the DVD era before bluray and 4K just for example the John Hughes movies from the 80’s went thru the roof, I think at one point 16 candles was $250, but eventually they came out again on bluray and you couldn’t give the DVD away. These days steelbooks, in particular 4K steelbooks always seem like solid buys. They often are limited and as you said, limited is the key. If it’s limited and 4K and the steelbook is one of the nicer looking ones, bang! I have thousands of movies on DVD/BD/4K and sure, I look around and think damn that’s a lot of money, and it softens the blow if I know many of them are worth more than I paid, but you have to have a buyer willing to pay that price or it doesn’t mean much. I don’t sell movies anymore unless I upgrade the title. Back when we use to buy/sell/trade I found that eventually I’d go out and repurchase the title, so I just quit doing it. I love every genre of film, but I am a huge horror fan. Especially 80’s slashers and anything with practical FX. Scream, Arrow, Vestron, Synapse, blue underground, Kino Lorber, vinegar syndrome, and a few more... That what I primarily spend big money on, and believe it or not a lot of the 60’s,70’s, 80’s, 90’s movies I collect from various genres come from goodwill, pawn shops, thrift stores, yard sales, flea mkts... I recase nearly everything which is suuuuper pricey, but I pick those movies up for 1-2 dollars, even $2 Blu-ray’s and I find that stores like 2nd in Charles and FYe have no idea what their movies are worth and I take pride in killing them since they gouge the heck out of people, Fye especially. I have a room in my house that’s a dedicated movie room, like my own little rental store. I also have a music room and my CD/Vinyl collection which has also gotten out of hand. Be careful guys because media collecting can take over your house easier than you may think. I have a very understanding wife of 25+ years and she enjoys the hunt more than anything. I’m just a huge fan of film, I collect certain directors, actors, eras and even certain labels/series.... Steelbooks, I tried to fight them off, I’m still trying but I am failing LOL. I’m pretty selective, and you have to be. I will say I don’t just collect, I watch them. I was a huge movie theater rat pre-covid, I have a lot of free time and my collection has served me well.

Forgot to mention, I hate slip covers, like, I REALLY hate slip covers. I chunk em except for my boutique horror labels. Those I carefully compress and save in gallon zip lock bags or acid free boxes. Then when I die my wife can slide them back on to sell at a big yard sale for pennies on the dollar and I can haunt the crap out of her (she’s been warned). LMAO

I have the French 30th anniversary steelbook of the back to the future trilogy that I had Christopher Lloyd sign when he came to Paris à few years ago. It has à huge sentimental value, but the most expensive blu rays I own are probably the UK Doctor who steelbooks (séries one is now very expensive, the cheapest I've seen it recently was 102 pounds on eBay). Series 6 just came out and I'm always afraid to miss a new set.

Well done for making this video it was very helpful of understanding the blurays of their values and not to mention boxset editions or limited editions like you also mentioned in the video that's why I love collecting collectors edition cause not only are they rare but as most of us do know that they can be worth a lot too.

The ONLY thing which decides the price of anything like this, is Supply and Demand; if lots of people want something limited, the price goes up. Just saw that the limited edition Blu-ray of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 that I have is going for $150 on Ebay! It's still in the original shrink-wrap plastic, and for sale, should anyone want it..

Pretty sure I got that Hellraiser set and Bride of Re-Animator at Newbury Comics for a decent price within the last few years. Also got the Friday the 13th Collection when that first came out. Do you have the Halloween collection from Shout/Scream Factory? I have that as well and it looks like the price has gone up. Like you, and I assume most people, I don't collect this stuff to sell it off, but it is nice to know some of them have some value.

I'm with you, Jeff. My most beloved boxed Bluray (and out of print) sets that grace my living room book shelf - yes, among some great books - for display because it's packaging is so great. Hitchcock Collection (2012), Kubrick Collection (2011), Bond 50 (2012), Star Wars Saga (2011) to which I've included the last three film's blurays for a true ennead (9) of films (it had 3 slots for bonus which I've moved to it's own custom case).

Enjoy your channel and 4K reviews, but I saw your ZATOICHI set in Criterion video and you have the 9 Blu-ray disc set which is still very much in print, but the older 27 disc Blu-ray + dvd combo set is OOP like pretty much all their B+d combo releases. I got it at the sale years ago, but it was a bit problematic with the beautiful packaging not entirely functional as some of my discs got a blackish adhesive residue on them. I'd prefer that Criterion just stick to digipack boxsets with plastic trays that protect discs better like the Jaques Demy B+d combo boxset. Cardboard holders for discs are often a nightmare for potentially damaging the discs that we need in nice shape to actually watch the movies. When I get around ro buying that Citizen Kane set next sale I'll probably buy an empty 4 disc case to store the discs in, thanks for the heads up in your worst releases video. P.S. it's pronounced closer to Zah-Toh-Ee-Chee. The 5 Japanese vowels are basically always pronounced the same way (unlike English and its myriad of exceptions) and when 2 vowels are together they are still both pronounced. The one trick is that letter U after S is often shortened so much as to not really be pronounced, more like S' in sukoshi where that I sound is also shortened to sound almost like s'kosh' a word brought back to America by soldiers to mean a little bit. A = ah, I = ee, U = oo, E = somewhere between eh & ay, O = oh Once you get used to the rules Japanese is fairly easy to pronounce whereas I find Korean a bit more frustrating with 8 vowels and some odd dipthongs and tongue twister words. Korea has a lot of great movies since the late 90s new wave and directors like Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Kim Jee-woon, Kim Ki-duk, etc. Unfortunately modern Japanese films of the past decade have mostly gone downhill aside from a small number of mostly arthouse and indie filmmakers, though Japan does have an amazing history of classic films going back to the silent era with Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kobayashi, Naruse, etcetera, even aside from the chambara and jidai geki samurai stuff most people watch.

The original Bandai DVD release of the complete series of the 80's anime Ronin Warriors. Sells for anywhere between $400 to $650 USD depending on where you look. My most valuable DVD set by a country mile. Then I have the complete collection of Ghost in the Shell 2nd GIG, anime legends variant on DVD which sells between $100 and $250 USD. Finally I have the complete original DVD collection of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine which retails for around $150 USD. Much further down on the totem pole I have stuff like the steelbook collector's box of A Bittersweet Life that goes for around $50 or $60 USD... And speaking of your Marvel Phase 1 box set...I'm absolutely dumbfounded that Marvel/Disney didn't release an Infinity Saga set with either the gauntlet or the infinity stones and some collectables celebrating 10 years and the completion of that cinema arc. I was so certain that it was going to happen that I'd long since set aside about 300 bucks in anticipation of an expensive set. For the life of me I've no idea why that didn't happen before the Covid epidemic.
