I liked this son well enough the first time I heard it on the album. But then a few months later my grandfather, Poppy, passed. I was listening to the album walking across campus and his song came on and simply destoyed me. It's clear the relationship between the speaker and the subject of the song isn't exactly a grandfatherly one, but it still sits with me and really helped me process his death.

My interpretation of this song is that the narrator and the person they're describing used to do some kind of illegal work together that got the other party killed - possibly a meth lab or something similar. The reference to "walk[ing] the narrow path these days" implies that the narrator is now on the straight and narrow. The line, "Call to mind sometimes that bloody, stinking mess" would indicate that whatever killed the narrator's friend was not pretty.

"Call to mind sometimes that bloody, stinking ___" mess or meth?
