In traditional Judaism, there's no concept of a resurrection, i.e. the disciples literally could not have comprehended Jesus rising from the dead - unless it actually happened. 2. 1st century Israel was not the time or place for preaching alternative religious ideas, since the Jews were already religiously persecuted by the Romans, and the disciples were putting their life on the line for so much as believing in Jesus. Not only did they believe in him, but preached the gospel unashamedly, and all but one of the original 12 ended up being martyred. Such extreme courage could only come from a genuine faith in life after death as a result of seeing undeniable evidence of the resurrection. 3. Pre-Jesus, there were others who claimed to be the Messiah, were killed, and their movement eventually died out. Jesus, on the other hand, was killed but his movement didn't die out, not even 2,000+ years later.
