John Bellairs was my go-to author for scary stories. He really is criminally underrated, so much more class and elegance than that hack RL Stine.

You know, they like JUST released “The Curse of the Blue Figurine” on Audible a couple weeks ago? I was stunned. It’s narrated by a guy named Johnny Heller who does a totally passable job, but I actually thought his take on Professor Childermass was very similar to yours - in a good way! Maybe it’s just not tough to do a “cranky old New England man” voice, but it made me think of your version of this. They’re going to keep releasing another Johnny Dixon audiobook every month on Audible for a while - later this May we’re getting an official version of “Mummy” on Audible, then “The Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull” in June, and “Chessmen of Doom” after that. I’m personally most excited for Chessmen and “The Trolley to Yesterday” which were probably my two favorite Johnny Dixon novels. Chessmen is the most legitimately creepy, and Trolley is the most fun and funniest. Of course I haven’t read either one in 20+ years…

THANKS! One of my favorites as a kid. Sadly I couldn't find an audiobook of it until now. Some of the Lewis Barnavelt books are available but none of the Johnny Dixon series (to my knowledge). Please tell me you've done other videos of Bellairs's books...

I have a favor? I love spooky stories audio, I have a playlist full of it. I would love for you to narrate the short stories in Alfred Hitchcock books like HAUNTED HOUSEFUL, MONSTER MUSEUM etc. *bats eyes* :)

Great job! Say, whatever happened to that investment book that you used to have on your website? I think you took it down before I got a chance to listen to it. What was the name of that title?

Well done, but it's not 'Bye-Ron', it's Byron, which rhymes with siren.

By the way, just a small note: only people who live in New England really know how to correctly pronounce the name of the town “Haverhill” where John Bellairs lived, and just about everyone mispronounces it the way you did - so don’t feel too bad. It’s actually pronounced “HAIVE-rill” with the “HAIVE” rhyming with the word “pave”, and just two syllables.

I'm actually from Maine, but you are right...I didn't know how to pronounce it. I started doing these Bellairs books because he was sort of a forgotten author whose books were out of print, and I wanted to introduce people to him. But now he's having a surge in popularity from the movie, I guess.
@isaacgraham57272 жыл бұрын
@@sorcharocks Hey, I’m also from Maine - grew up and spent most of my young adulthood in Portland. I think it was one of the reasons why I liked the Johnny Dixon books the best, I think. Like, my friend had a house on Vinalhaven where I’d spent the weekend once, so seeing it show up (I think it was in The Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull) definitely made it all more resonant and scary to me. Heck, I’d hiked up Mt. Chocorua before too with my dad, apropos of this book! That kind of stuff is very cool when you’re a kid. Anyway, I kinda know what you mean about how strange it is seeing Bellairs gain popularity out of nowhere because of the movie, but I really doubt he’ll ever be especially popular or well-known. What I love about his books are how much I can truly and realistically identify with his boy protagonists. Characters like Johnny Dixon and Lewis Barnavelt (and Anthony Monday too to a fair extent) are all sensitive and intelligent - but also fearful, awkward, shy, bad at sports, from poor families, deeply unpopular at school and ultra-dweeby. That sort of character is infinitely more easy to relate to than, say, Harry Potter - who is hugely popular, great at sports, brave and courageous in all circumstances, innately powerful, and deeply cool and handsome. Not to knock JK Rowling too much, but especially as someone who grew up reading Bellairs before Harry Potter even existed, I know which type of hero I prefer.

This is, honestly, the most god-awful reading of any book I have ever tried to listen to. I grew up on John Bellairs' novels. the person reading tis has absolutely no depth of character or idea where the story is going. It feels like if I just put pages of script in front of my teenage nephew and commanded, "Here, just read this..." Honestly, I'm not the kind of person to say bad things about people or things, but this has made me very unhappy.
@nofishinmydiet4 жыл бұрын
oh, damn. I only just read tat this is a Fan Reading. Now I kinda feel like a judgmental a**hole. I apologize. I had thought that this was an audiobook recording. I don't know how to delete my earlier comment. Please know that I feel like a complete schmuck... I know that I couldn't have done any better. I completely reverse my initial reaction and thank you for putting this book into the popular realm of KZbin.

That’s all right. I had a crap microphone back then and I have a hard time listening to it myself. Maybe you would like my version of the House With a Clock in its Walls better. Either way, I just do it for fun.

@@sorcharocks dude, it's been bothering me al day. Again, I'm really sorry for what I said yesterday. For what it's worth, it came from a place of love for the source material. but, really, I feel bad about putting such a trollesque comment on this. I want to thank you again for putting this up in the first place. Bellairs's books hold a very personal and special place in my heart and my childhood. It was really cool of you to do this in the first place. peace ✌️
