This scoop just in from our man-on-the-scene reporter Bernard "Just call me Barney" Bunsagger: The so-called government of Portland Oregon has just surpassed, I repeat, has just surpassed its counterpart in Los Angeles (no mean feat, I might add) to win the coveted "Epic Fail 2020 Award". For those keeping track at home, it was the concentration of human feces and used syringes per square block downtown that gave Portland the edge. Go, City of Roses! Take that, City of Angels! Keep trying, City by the Bay! Signed, I grew up in Portland, but I'm quite happy to be living ten time zones away now, in Helsinki, where I ended up mostly because my wife is Finnish. Never in my worst nightmares would I have thought that such a once-beautiful city as Portland, regularly voted one of the most liveable cities in the US, would end up as it has.

A lot of these weren’t failures, like Blockbusters, just companies that had a niche market that went away with time, as happens continuously.

yeah including Blockbuster is like including Kodak. They should have had Sega dreamcast and Cybiko and other real failures. The Trump thing is super cringy
@Wii505
@Wii505 4 жыл бұрын
Ya, but you got to think about that Blockbuster and Kodak not being around no more or their bad reputation nowadays. Blockbuster didn't do Movies in the mail until it was to late and Kodak didn't see digital cameras being the future until it was to late. So you can say that they are failures nowadays, but not in the past. So, you are both right if you are not talking about the present day times, but instead when those companies were still at the top of their game.

Laserdisc didn't fail. The people failed it. Superior quality compared to VHS. No deterioration after each view although some discs failed to play after a few years from laser rot. Uncompressed high quality audio. Way ahead of VHS. It was out for 20 years before being replaced by DVD in 1997.

Blockbuster became aware of Netflix before they got big and the CEO of Blockbuster refused a proposal to go the same route. He famously said " no one will watch a movie on their computer." That's a huge failure.

k re, I totally disagree. Very poor management and shitty employees drove it into the ground. They had a chance to acquire Netflix and decided not to. Doesn't matter anyway. I've always had bad experiences with these drunk clowns. They frequently treated me like they couldn't care less and the assholes wouldn't even accept their own gift cards! Had to throw away a $75 gift card because they refused to let me rent certain titles with it. I'm glad they went under. They are an example of the worst customer service. I think part of it has to do with hiring very immature people. They should have tried raising the minimum working age to 21 since I've only seen high school students in their chains.
@JaxDagger
@JaxDagger 5 жыл бұрын
@@largol33t1 netflix would not have helped it still would have become an entirely different service and only remained in name, blockbuster was a huge success, everyone knew it everyone used it and indeed technology just put rental stores out of business, if it was only blockbuster all the other small rental stores would still exist, they dont. I think you are basing your opinions on one negative experience or one store lacking in training because I never had a problem with them or the staff here in the UK

There was a guy from the Netherlands who, after the was wanted to publish a book he had found. One publisher called it "Teenage drivel that, even if the context was still irrelevant, would be utterly uninteresting to everyone who tries to read it." The man was, in fact the author's father, but he didn't give up and eventually had the book published where it became a best seller. It has been in print continuously now for nearly 70 years. The book was the Diary of Anne Frank.

@Kathryn Foster-martin They also have one of the highest tax rates per capita in the WORLD. Let's also not forget that they traffic in millions of illegals annually and let them live in sanctuary cities where they can steal even more from the American people for half the price. In SF, finding needles and feces on sidewalks is normal, and the politicians don't care as long as they can keep their sanctuary cities. California is probably one of the worst states to live in right now, and we don't want that in our otherwise normal states. I live in Northern Nevada, the coastals are screwing up my town faster than they screwed California. California is a dump, and it only took 30 years for it to go to the suburbian paradise of America to the drug-induced Detroit of the West.

NO way. Their employees are the worst of any brand I've encountered and it wasn't just ONE store. It was at a majority of them. They deserved to go under. The way they treated customers was despicable. Complaining to the manager got nowhere. Oh, and $3.25 to rent a movie for a measly two nights? Their local competitor offered FIVE nights for $1.99 and even had 2 for 1 rentals after 8pm on Tuesdays! Blockbuster NEVER offered deals like that.

People talking like this exhibit would have helped me feel okay with it a lot faster than I have. @Colorado Strong I'd imagine it's because skill-based employment (the type which requires a degree or certification) places less emphasis on public perceptions of an individual than do jobs in hospitality or the service sector. I know from experience- being short and looking young- that employers in those sectors often pay and promote based on superficial judgments rather than actual competence; that what you are capable of doing does not matter so much as what it's assumed a person is capable or incapable of doing. In a skill-based job, you're being hired because it's known already that you are qualified for the job.

LaserDiscs don't belong in that museum. Unlike RCA's SelectaVision discs (a much better choice for the museum), they were on the market for over a decade and were very popular with those who could afford them. When higher definition laserdiscs were released in the form of DVDs, the technology forced the retirement of videotape. It's also a little unfair to pick on Blockbuster and video stores because they were wildly popular, but it was too expensive to convert to the new technologies. Like Kodak, they did what they needed to do at the time. However, I remember stocking Ayds in our drug store. Even before the 1980's, the brand didn't sell very well.

Kodak absolutely did not do what they needed to do at the time. They literally invented the digital camera but sat on it in fear of losing business, until other companies.... went digital. I would put them in the museum as well.

(thank you all for taking time to like what I wrote) The biggest failure in this whole show is putting the MEGA hat in with the Donald Trump game. I'm just a girl and I never used to care for Trump, but anybody who has trouble wanting to see America great has been eating clowns for breakfast. Now......I'm going to explain this for those of you on drugs: Ya see, Bob over there... Bob knows there's a reason he loves America plus he knows it can even get better. And then there's Bill. Bill hates Bob because Bob doesn't want to be a communist. Now....... Who would you rather have for a character witness in court? If your answer was Bill, it could be rehab time. (Again)

The BETAMAX was not a FAIL! They actually recorded video much better than a VHS! The industry was pushing copyright protection and many companies didn't have to pay rights to SONY, that is why the VHS was winning. You can still find rental video stores all over but not as big corporations. The Laser Disc was NOT a FAIL either... It was a very popular medium used in home theaters, music production(Karaoke) and even used in Arcade games! You could even rent it at a local Library! It was really an expensive medium but it worked really well. "HDDVD" medium was more of a fail than Laser Disc. Those E-paper/Nook Tablets were very short lived. They would have been more useful back in the late 90's. Not much of a fail but people enjoyed more battery life out of a smartphone. Unfortunately you did not show off more tech there or just glanced over more interesting stuff.

Want to make a correction about your statement about laserdisc video quality, and I would argue that the medium was not a failure with nearly 30 years of sales. Some laserdisc were created from tape transfers and looked like the tape. Laserdisc has the bandwidth to allow for the full ATSC maximum quality. The picture quality is considerably better than DVD MPEG, and orders better than VHS. The element that limited consumers enthusiastically adopting laserdisc is the 60 min / side problem. As for a failure, RCA's CED video disc was such an epic disaster it sunk one of the largest consumer corporations in the world. That medium was a pure analog extension of the LP record, but for video. CED has about the same picture quality as a good VHS tape. ( as a disclaimer I must state that I am an AV professional and a laserdisc collector, and do enjoy Laserdisc classics on my 120" Stewart screen projected from my Runco projector. The experience a fully THX and ISF calibrated system costing a ridiculous amount of money, provides is significantly different from a standard TV. Bluray and 4K HDR is stunning on the same system )

The Ayds candy is worse than you know. According to what I read, they knew about the bad association and decided it wasn't going to be a big deal, it would pass, and they stubbornly hung onto the name. Sales dropped, and they went so far as to change the spelling. Didn't help. Some people think the Me Coke thing was a distraction, when they brought the real stuff back it was with corn syrup instead of more expensive sugar, and people were so happy they'd "won" that no one noticed. There was a drummer who got frustrated that his band wasn't going anywhere and quit. They replaced him with Ringo Starr, and the rest is history. World's worst timing, poor guy. And according to a friend of mine who used to wirk there, Blockbuster had a chance to buy Netflix cheap, and they basicaly pooh-poohed and said this streaming garbage would never catch on.

I noticed the Pippin game console and also HD-DVD. Divx Rental DVDs should be in there too. A concept created by Circuit City and a bunch of lawyers. The idea was that you never had to return the disc, just throw it away after the rental time period expired. Then the complaints of discs filling up landfills made them offer 'return bins' so the discs could be recycled. The return bins contradicted the initial premise of the format. Now they wanted you to return the discs. Oops. The players were also $100 more than a standard DVD player, but at least they were backwards compatible with DVD. After the format failed and lawsuits were filed over the failed lifetime support for more expensive disc purchases, $100 rebates were offered to cover the extra fee for the players. The players had to 'phone home' in order for discs to play. So when the servers were finally shut down, the discs were drink coasters.
