MML is memorable for the same reason as Resident Evil. We spend a lot of time on Kattelox Island and get to know the people and the city. On a first playthrough you have no idea where to go a lot of the time so you end up backtracking all over the place and you really get to know the island inside and out, literally. We spend so much time on the island grinding money for upgrades or looking around the ruins or just enjoying the atmosphere of the city districts. We get to know the city just like we get to know the Spencer Mansion and with that familiarity comes a sense of comfort.

megaman legends 1 and 2 and the prequel misadventiures of tron bonne are such underated gems. the music inside dungeons of the first game made you feel like you shouldn't be there, that place is not for the living. and the lore implications made on it makes the music even more unsettling. and them the game presents you with lighthearted music scores like the 3 bonne sibblings, the support car, flutter and downtown. man I wish we live in the timeline where capcom made the 3rd game :(

I guess because they know you'll be hanging around those towns talking to NPCs for hours, so the music had better be good. there's something very special about the sprightly and impossibly catchy work of Jun Ishikawa as well, and while I'm at it, the skillful layering of Junichi Masuda. and my man Totakeke also kills it every time with his inherently smile-inducing music.

That 180 makes the spooky feeling so much more intense!

Mega Man Legends as a series was so full of awesome tracks! I'm sorry if my vocabulary is clumsy in the next bit, I know nothing about music theory but I wanna shout out a couple of the boss fight tracks from MML2. Saul Kada Teisel Battle: Despite being so short, I think this track is masterfully tense. I'd divide it into an A section, B section and AB bridge. A section begins with the driving rhythm and the background synths. Then the short melody kicks in, bombastic with an air of desperation to it. As the melody ends, the AB bridge starts seamlessly and one background instrument gets stuck playing the same short bit over and over, building anticipation in tandem with the strings. It all builds up to section B, a short breakdown that releases the tension and restarts the loop! I find impossible to not drum my fingers to the drums of section B.. Wonderful work. Sera Battle First Phase: Song starts off with an aggressive drum bit. The drums then go on and feel like they're dancing around throughout the song. The background synths do a 4-phase buildup and then bring in the melody. It's the Elysium leifmotif, after which the 4-phase build happens again. Then the Elysium leifmotif is built upon slightly and the 4-phase buildup happens again, but crucially, after it there's a tiny bit of silence that feels like the combatant's hearts skipping a beat.. Until the beginning's aggressive drums quickly ring again and the loop starts over. The feel is not only "a duel to the death", it has a hint of unsureness that reflects Sera's conflicted feelings toward both the Carbons and Trigger. Again wonderful work, especially since it's an original by Tomozawa unlike Juno's theme (Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor).

First, I loved this game and its gaiden “misadventures of Tron bonne” so very very much. These two are my favorite two games of the entire 32-bit era. Second, in answer to your question: I was a little older than you and my videogame music formative experiences were in the earlier Megaman soundtracks. Especially Mega Man 1. The eight bit music of my youth has greatly influenced my compositions as I play very arpeggiated accompaniment quite frequently, an aesthetic born of eight bit tunes often using arpeggiation to spell out chords for which their sound chips lacked the voice count to play as block chords

@@SoundFontGuy thank you for making the video, I hadn’t looked at this game in years and seeing the market and various town and underground zones sent me back. I've used boards similar to it when I had a music comp class (which I lost the music I made for it cuz lack of backups...) alot of my jazz fusion buds use that JV-1080 for their backing tracks, it's still a good sounding module with thick sounds i blend the drums from time to time. interesting about that orch hit. but it makes sense. i Found you can create a great Orchestra STAB by combining a orchestra hit at proper levels with a violin vib hit layered with a staccato solo hit slightly louder than the vib, and just before the blend meet raise the the volume by 10%. the result will be a orch hit as a lead ending with the Vib slicing through the sound and the Staccato creating a bombastic ending.

I can't overstate how influential game music has been in my life. The list of music that's influenced and uplifted me over the years is truly too great to even begin. But I'll try anyway. I've been playing games since 1988, and the first bit of game music which made me sit up and take notice was many of the tunes from Mega Man 2. It was the first time I really started paying attention. It was back in a time where music, being just a series of bleeps, bloops wheees and tsss tssses had to have some real melody to be memerable. Don't get me wrong, I love modern game music as much if not more than its past, but back then, melody's literally all you had. From there my interest only grew. Final Fantasy, YS 3, Super Metroid, Lufia, Castlevania 4 ... the list could literally go on and on. One of my mom's happiest memories was when she left my semi-abusive father, and was really not sure if she made the right choice. She heard me humming along with one of the songs to Final Fantasy IV. I used to sing a lot as a little child. She was so happy. It made her realize she did the right thing. In reality, she absolutely did. But to this day, I haven't had the heart to tell her I just really liked that song. Who knows, maybe there was even some truth to what she thought after all.

Jet Force Gemini. No surprise being apart of RARE but no less masterpieces of their time with grand orchestras and similar fitting ambience depending on the worlds you visited. Tawfret sounding woodsy, yet dead with a tribal undertone to it to fit how it was once a normal planet. S.S.Anubis using patternized clangs and hammering almost to resemble that prison work vibe of being forced to work as a captive. The abandoned soace station, as eerie as Tawfret but worse... there's even a lack of instruments to emphasize the clear emptiness of what's left after... well, who knows, it's a mystery just what happened. That game is a treasure when it comes to game feel for its music and even its weapon sounds.

I'm a huge fan of Kow Otani for scoring three important pieces of media in my childhood: Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 and the anime series Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star. Shadow of the Colossus is another game that really captures the feeling of desolation in its music and let's say Otani's score gave Gundam Wing an air of seriousness to what was kind of a convoluted and silly plot. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZmZpHSQYqxoptEsi=K54LINNY3D414aqN

Great video and all, but I want to give appreciation to an element commenters aren't appreciating. You went through the effort of creating some sound tools, and instead of exclusively selling them, you only charge for the HD versions while the base set is entirely free. Charging for HD is fine and understandable, but you COULD have charged for the SD versions. This is lovely. This is a true love for art and a wholesome desire to help others have the tools they need to explore and create. This is putting the effort in simply for the love of the craft and the benefit of others who wish to pursue it. I know it can sound like making a mountain out of a molehill. "Dude, he didn't do anything that wild. Calm down." But even if it's small things like this, they should be appreciated, especially in a time where it seems like everything everyone does is for monetary gain. Just going "Here, made some useful stuff for you. If you wanna pay me, neat, but you can still use it for free" means something, and I appreciate that.
@SoundFontGuyАй бұрын
Thank you so much for saying that. I really do love the craft, and free tools/soundfonts played a huge role in allowing me to explore when I was young and just starting out. It feels really satisfying to now have the skill set to be able to offer such things back to the community. Your comment is very kind and I was genuinely moved just reading it, so thank you very much for that.

@SoundFontGuy I'm nostalgic for the time, especially in the video game space, where people made stuff just because they love making things. Video game fans made video games. And yeah, they were sold for profit because people gotta eat, but it was clear that the love that went into those games was the main point; creatives just want to create. Chefs want to make their patrons happy. When you cook for a loved one, it isn't just about intaking the basic caloric requirements for survival, it's about making something to make that person happy. And games are the same. The best product comes from people who have both the love of creation and the freedom to express that creativeness. Studios like Inti Creates clearly adore what they do and adore their fans, and because they are a studio that is not just skilled, but passionate about creation, every game they make is an absolute banger. The Zero series put them on the map and has some of my favorite video game music of all time. Ippo Yamada is a genius, capable of doing way more with a GBA soundcard than anyone would expect from any composer. You mentioned Metroidvanias, so I will mention Bloodstained, and the absolute gigachad move of openly making fun of themselves for "poop graphics" after fans gave their feedback. There was no ego, only a love for game creation, respect for the fans, and a genuine desire to make the product as good as possible, and Iga and his team are absolute legends for being a shining example of everything I have said here. All this to say, it was a small detail of the video but it resonated with me as a gesture of love and good will that is becoming increasingly rare as the years go on, and I wanted to make sure that you knew it did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Little things like this have a profound domino effect down the line. Who knows? The greatest, most beautiful game of 2055 may have been worked on by someone who was inspired by the tools you gave them in this very video. That's the end of my thesis lol My apologies for being maybe a little overly wordy.

Hey to answer your question about which VGM stands out to me, I'm just gonna list out a bunch and label some picks. 1) R - Type 3 - [Fast metal / rock type of music mixed with horror] - Acid Creature / Stage 1 2) Super R - Type [Funky music] - Solo Sortie / "The national anthem of the Bydo Empire" which legit just sounds like a Bobby Brown track 3) Gradius 3 [Very synthy and high energy] - In the Wind 4) Gradius Gaiden [Love the intro theme, has a leitmotif that's used in the later speed stages] - Cemetery 5) Contra 3 [Straight up cinematic] - Neo Kobe Factory / Ground Zero 6) Streets of Rage 2 [Night club music] - Go Straight 7) Castlevania Rondo of Blood [Funky and catchy] - Cross a Fear 8) Mischief Makers [Very lighthearted but intense] - Hurry! 9) Legend of Dragoon [Fast Paced, very thematic and a bit rock oriented] - Battle 1 10) Thunder Spirits [Catchy] - Back to the Fire 11) Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (SNES) - [Very MMX sounding at times, really memorable] - Area 1 / Boss Theme 12) R-Type Leo [Really funky and different] - Stage 1 13) Mass Effect 1 [Synthy Sci Fi music] - Galaxy Map / Callista 14) Super Turrican [80s sounding] - Stage 1-3 15) Sonic Adventure 1 [Very diverse set of genres] - Ice Cap / Red Hot Skull / Literally any knuckles track ahaha / E101's theme / Egg Carrier 16 Sonic Adventure 2 [See above] - City Escape / Unknown From M.E. / Any other knuckles track 17) F- Zero [Racing music] Mute City / Fire Field 18) Megaman Network Transmission [Nice callbacks to the Classic series with their boss themes] - Zero Gravity Area. 19) Kirby 64: Crystal Shards [Jovial music, but intense] - Factory Inspection 20) Transformers Devastation [Dynamic menu music] - The Ark Theme 21) R-Type Dimensions [ Remixes of previous series] - Water Splash (Love that fade into the organ!) 22) R-Type Final 2 [Mix of remixes and nice ambient] - Final Point (Graveyard of other ships, really conveys the sorrow of the endless fighting) 23) Sonic CD JP/EU [Straight up funky!] - Boss Theme 24) R Type Final 2 DLC OST - [Remixes from the series] - Undefinable (R-Type fans will instantly recognize this Boss theme! Love the theremin) 25) Policnauts OST [ Funky stuff] - End of the Dark (It's the Doot doot do do doot music that plays at the beginning of MGS1!) 26) DK Jungle Climber [Reject music, return to monke] - Candy's theme (Seriously look this one up, straight banger!) 27) Yoshi's Island [Koji Kondo, can't go wrong with this OST] - Crystal Caverns (such catchy tune!) 28) Literally any Zelda track but I really dig the Shadow Temple from OOT - Very ominous! 29) Borderlands Tales - Bandit Slaughter House 30) TMNT 4 (Rockabilly / Thrash METAL / Just really damn good music!) - Alley Cat Blues / Boss Theme / Sewer Surfin' 31) Super Mario Wonder - Airship Theme (Really dig the more intense remix) 32) R-Type (C64) - Title Theme - really different and catchy. 33) Salamander 2 Stage 2 (Sensation) - Really synthy and upbeat 34) R - Type Final 2 DLC OST - Slip Slidin' Away - I just like the vibe of this one. 35) Knife Edge [Fast paced and intense] - Dead City 36) Pilot Wings 64 [Laid back] - Hang Glider 37) Phantasy Star Online [Synthy and catchy, very moody at times] - Mother Earth of Dishonesty 1 (Forest 1) / You have nowhere to go (Mines Boss 2) / Ruins 2 38) Bomber Man 64 [Great use of the Amen drumbreak] - Blue Resort Theme Bonus) ANY Megaman game ahaha, they all have great OSTs. There's many more but I've chosen to cut it short here. I'm a musician who grew up listening to VGM. My absolute favourite aspect of playing a new game was listening to new music. Literally every game was like an album to me. A lot of this music to me was more than just a song. It was the backdrop to a world of imagination and wonder. Flying through space, fighting for everlasting peace, destroying cores on giant intergalactic warships, attacking aliens aggressively! As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate these pieces much more as I learn more about composition and music production. To this day I'm still amazed at how much these composers were able to do with what limited technology they had. It's a strong reminder that it's not the tools that make great music - it's the person behind them! A lot of my influences have been inspired by the Megaman series, namely X. But also by anything else that catches my eye (ear?). I like to experiment around and learn new techniques I can apply to my own productions. It's almost like a game to me! My goal is to one day create my own original music the likes of these amazing tracks I listed above. I want to make them for my own personal story that I've been working on; Astro Knight. It's about a SUPER-POWERED-ACTION-FIGHTING-MIGHTY-MORPHIN-ROBOT-SPACE-MAN! 💎
