The story they are discussing is usually called Sundiata (or Sunjata). It's an epic that is most often performed rather than written down. There are some beautiful performances of it on KZbin, but especially good, I think, is from The Centre for Sound Communities. The title is "The Sunjata Story - Glimpse of a Mande Epic." The poetic translation used in this performance was written by a descendant of Sundiata himself...

that was my name when i was a child my step father gave it to me so i could give up my white slave name forced on me at birth....i too had a leg injury ( at 12, lived with my Caribbean grandmother and grand father for a while because of this ) and my sign was leo ( lion) so it seem to fit ( i reasoned that in later years ) but later in life we African centered Kmt oriented religion) use an oracle that saids the name did not serve my life path or life force and i think the oracle said that because of the islamic divisive cultural excessive patriarchal change in west africa... (i think patriarchy is fine and matriarchy as long as it is balance between the too and the only one to do that i think was Ancient Kemet mis-named "Egypt")....took a terrible toll still felt till this day and land /cultural /history theft by arabs who we seem to not be able to kick out and then there is Darfur and Africans who want to be or pretend to be Arabs with an arab agenda !! these things are equally important. now we cant claim Kmt as ours because we are revisionists so the whites and the arabs say but Kmt was always a African civilization started by them invented by them and as white author Martin Bernal told us all you have to do is read the quotes by the ancients praises to Chikh Anta Diop and Theophile Obenga who gave us excellent research on the African origins of Kmt it doesnt matter mulattos took over thousands of years later and invading greeks copying the culture with no understanding of its depths ! now arabs, in stores and doctors offices are so bold as to challenge me when the see me wearing an ankh as if arabs invented Kmt culture !! its language lifestyle and cultural icons does not connote an arab vibe what so ever, not in the least !..... and when they originally invaded Kmt in 640 a.d. they destroyed many temples and the sphinx ( in the 12th century ) and disfigured the pyramids ( stripped their limestone casings to make mosques) because it naturally did not means anything to them !!!!! so clearly they were not trying to claim the ancient culture of Kmt as their own originally... ! but billions of dollars are generated because of egyptology and the wests interest in so called ancient egypt, and arabs have been their for 1700 yrs - but acting as if that is their indigenous land !!!!!) so because they heard African americans claiming African people started the land of Kmt- the arabs had to jump up and say hell no now. So African muslims need to see and understand even if mix with African blood arab muslims ( whether Muslim or not ) has an arab agenda over anything else. ( darfur proves that as well as other battles )

As a Malian, Sundiata Konaté which is the actual last name. We have 2 versions of him. 1 that never reverted and the second he became a muslim in exile. But his brothers and sons and nephews became Muslims
