Theres a Mayday/Air Crash Investigation episode on this including interview with Greg Feith, who was the NTSB guy, who finally got to go on the ill fated expedition. It was amazing, all they had to go through, and even then 25-30 years later his utter frustration with, what he felt was deliberate sabotaging of their attempt at investigation, was very obvious. He also said, that he had tried repeatedly to get a 2nd expedition approved, since the 1st expedition was so disastrous, but he was denied every time. He was certain, that all their "bad luck" had been some1 deliberately making sure, they wouldnt get to do an actual investigation.

The amount of Cocaine smuggled through Eastern AL cited here is peanuts compared to what the Nicaraguan Contras smuggled into the USA in the 1980's under the protection of the CIA. Read "Dark Alliance" by Gary Webb to find out the details of how the CIA was behind the Crack Cocaine Epidemic. The CIA was not directly involved but they "ran interference" for the Contras who used the proceeds to fund their attempt at a counter-revolution in Nicaragua. The Contras brought MANY, MANY Tons of Cocaine into the USA in the 1980's. Also check out Barry Seals, a CIA operative, who flew an old retired USAF transport plane into Mena AR in the 1980's which held MANY Tons of Cocaine per flight. It was AR Gov Bill Clinton who allowed Mena AR to become an American destination for this other part of financing the Contras. Some say Clinton's seed money for his 1992 Presidential Campaign came from from his cut of the Cocaine profits coming through AR. Don't even know if the Cocaine coming into the USA through Eastern AL was part of the Contra operation, but the amounts cited here are trivial compared to the tonnage that the Contras brought in. I would guess that the crash of Flight 980 and the poor attempts to investigate it were somehow related to the Contra operation. This would be a good point from which to do a new investigation of Flight 980 but Beware !!! The CIA "suicided" Gary Webb in his Sacramento CA home around 1998 to shut him up from revealing even more about how the US Govt was in the Drug Business.

At the end, when the two hobbyists discovered fragments of the Black Box torn to shreds on their private expedition - I struggle to believe that was caused by the crash. The only times I've read about both the FDR and CVR were both destroyed in a plane crash, it was due to post-crash fires that burned long enough and hot enough to cause irreparable damage. There has - to my knowledge - never been a complete loss of the black box caused entirely from impact. tbh I'm not entirely sure it's even possible for a plane to go *fast* enough to destroy a black box on impact. This crash might in fact be the only example. Or, y'know...someone on expedition 1 took it out, wrenched open the shell, and gutted the contents.

You left out your speculations on the last expedition finding pieces of the outer casing of the Black Box. Those Black Boxes are made to be nearly indestructible and yet pieces were found of it's outer casing. That would really imply intentional destruction because no amount of speed, fuel, or impact is suppose to be able to destroy the black box. It is positioned in the rear of the plane so that most of the kinetic energy from a crash will have dissipated by the time the black box reaches the impact site. From what you said in the video, the rear stairs were found intact as well as the area where the box would have been located. That rules out the plane being shot down as the cause for the pieces of black box being found. It seems more like it had been removed first, and then intentionally demolished with explosives that later slid down the slopes until found. I am stuck with the conclusion that something nefarious occurred and steps were taken to conceal it.
@maclain728
@maclain728 Жыл бұрын
If explosives had been used there would have been signs on the recovered piece, whether that’s burn marks or residue. I think it’s more likely the black box was separated during the impact and destroyed between time of crash and final resting. Open to other ideas but Occam’s razor tells me that one right now
@md-io4tb
@md-io4tb Жыл бұрын
Look up for Lauda Air flight 004. The Black Box was destroyed there, while the voice recorder survived. And that happened in, I think, 1991. However, the machine's last reported velocity was Mach 0,99, and it has been suggested that that was just the maximum speed the display could show. After this plane crash, the Black Boxes had to be even more resistant. Anyway, your assumption the box was destroyed manually could be true. Idk.

@@jfangm "That quickly" was 30 years. 30 years exposed to the elements in a mountainous enviroment with freezing and thawing cycles and storms is enough to wreck something like a FDR apart. What should be suspicious is that the magnetic tape was not the original magnetic tape and contained a recording of a show. That tape was put in place of whatever was there before. That's clear evidence that the black box was tampered with.

I got literal chills in my spine when the footprints were mentioned. Based on this video, a few things are likely true: - The true cause of the crash was never meant to be discovered by the Bolivians or Paraguayans - The Bolivian government wanted to halt the NTSB's investigation at best (kill them at worst) - The black box was recovered, and/or intentionally destroyed, by someone who was never listed as being on an expedition - The bodies were recovered, or destroyed, by someone (who again, was never someone publicly listed on an expedition) - The NTSB was either incompetent, did not want to find the cause of the crash, or some combo of both This might be a stretch (especially considering that there is literally no proof of it), but I think one possibility is that the cartel itself was involved in the compromised investigation DRIECTLY, either by sending cartel members or contracted locals up to sabotage the crash site.

So what we know is the bodies were gone, meaning there were no deaths in the crash and they tried hiking away, or they were removed. The FDR and CVR were both gone, despite the section of the plane that housed them being intact, but chunks of the outer casing were found, indicative of severe damage. And one million dollars of contraband cargo were still present. So we have Several VIPs No bodies Tail intact CVR or FDR being badly damaged enough to knock off chunks of it $1mil contraband left behind Most logical to me is that someone moved the bodies, smashed the crap out of the black box, took the tape, and left $1million sitting there. But then why bother moving ALL the bodies? (Possibly to avoid pinpointing who the main target was?) Eyewitness accounts point to a midair breakup possibly after an explosion, why was no explosive residue found? (Could this accounts perhaps have been fabricated under threat?) Why did whoever took the black box not take the million dollars of contraband, unless there was other contraband even more valuable? If so what was it?If it was Terrorism why did no one claim responsibility? And how in the hell did we get three separate countries all willing to sweep this under the rug? There are missing human remains and missing black box fragments sliding down the south face. Our answers lie upland, likely in a mass grave that would become slightly more massive if anyone caught wind of its potential exposure.

It's the 18 minutes of I Spy that gets me. I guess somebody made an audio recording of a TV episode (not unheard of; people did that going back to the 60s) to listen to privately. But I Spy went off the air in 1968. Someone was listening to TV episode that was more than 15 years old when their plane hit the mountain. They must have really liked that show, and it was the last thing they heard. What a sad, disquieting thought. Doubly disquieting to think someone's last moments might have been spent listening to Bill Cosby. * shudders *

Especially when the governments have an unbelievable amount of money, they couldn't give more funding? And think about what was on the aircraft. Drugs and smuggling. The fact that they were loading extra cargo on these planes is incredibly dangerous and might have contributed to the plane crash. Pilots calculate how much fuel they take on board based on the weight of the plane. The weight of the plane also needs to be balanced so that it doesn’t throw the plane off. Both of these factors have caused multiple plane crashes before. (For example, Air Midwest 5481)

I believe the crash was planned. The people that were supposed to be on board, the lack of proper investigation, the black box being completely gone besides a few pieces of the outer shell, the reports of parts falling the flight plan not physically allowing said parts to fall where they supposedly did or the crash site. Nothing but the key details have remained lost. My biggest point of confusion is that SOMEHOW, the plane split along the cabin so that the tail was intact but not much else was found while also having parts claimed to be dropped over a town MILES away with the flight plan not physically allowing either the parts falling or the crash to happen. I personally can't see it being anything but direct and intentional sabotage.

To answer both your questions: The tail section is often the most intact part of a plane in a crash, this is for 2 reasons, it is designed to be sturdier, than everything sledge other than the wings especially on a 727 and it is the same physics as a car crash the front acts as a crumple zone taking the energy of the crash so the rear takes massively less force than the front in a head on collision. In response to parts falling in the proposed location, where is the evidence? Why were these parts never found? eyewitness testimonies can be sketchy at the best of times especially in the conditions that this crash occurred in. The simplest explanation for this crash is like so many crashes before and after it the plane was off course and the pilots didn’t realise either due to faulty navigational systems or pilot error this lead to controlled flight into terrain. Possibly the pilots realised at the last minute and spooled the engines to try and climb out. The plane breaks apart into many parts which are embedded into the snow and bodies are flung from the plane. The black boxes are also knocked loose into the snow. The first expedition was an expedition of untrained locals who didn’t know exactly what items they were looking for and how to look for them. The Bolivian government can be explained purely by incompetent investigating, which once again we have seen in the past. Look how closed governments react to plane crashes in their jurisdiction they always close down information streams first, this was most likely why the initial climbers were threatened. They don’t like looking weak and especially when the crash involves Americans.

@@mattj3864 Given the findings of contraband in the wreckage, and the many connections Eastern had with drug smuggling, its clear to me that some amount of bribery occurred, either of the Bolivian government or the NTSB, which lead to so little funding or effort being put in recovering the aircraft. I agree that the eyewitness reports of falling debris are unreliable, and we shouldn't jump to conclusions that the crash was intentionally caused, but I think its safe to say that the crash itself was intentionally covered up by some party connected to the Eastern scandals. I would agree that the Bolivian government nowadays is probably just "covering it up" to prevent bad publicity or show how incompetent they are, rather than a continuing conspiracy of the crash and what occurred.

Phew now that was a mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat. How much money was involved to allow for a cover-up like this to happen in the first place? Personally I'm placing my money on someone else having been up there beforehand to recover the black box, even if this opens up questions as to why they didn't recover the animal skins for example.... God the worst part about these mysteries really is the fact that they're open ended. Nonetheless thank you for the great execution on this documentary and keep up the fantastic work!

Great video on a very interesting subject. I am really interested in plane crashes, but even to me this case was completely unknown until now, but it already really fascinates me - this really seems to be one of the weirdest, most mysterious unsolved cases in aviation history. And while I'm really far from being a conspiracy theorist, I also strongly believe that something is not right here and that some people know more than the public does. Hopefully the truth will one day reveal.

As a Bolivian I have to say that I never heard of this crash before this video, thanks Barely Sociable, this was a very interesting and well produced video, also I'm not surprised about the lack of interest of the government in investigating the crash, in 1985 Bolivia was in the middle of its most severe economical crisis, and social unrest, the presidential elections were held in 1985 (1 year earlier than it should) due to the social and economical chaos, I'm not justifying the mishandling of the investigation but I think Bolivia had most important matters to deal at the time. Keep the good work, I enjoy your content. P.S those 600 USD would have been about 450000000 pesos Bolivianos due to the hyperinflation Bolivia was suffering.
