To me the weirdest pokemon is Wish Chasey / Blissey. The event was only released in Japan for a festival, yet, the move with Chansey and Blissey became a staple on competitive sets for multiple generations.

My favorite obscure Pokémon is Octazooka Sableye. Released only in Japan, I got it from a pre-used copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby. Thing is, this was not only an *American* copy, but the event was released EARLIER than gen 6. Meaning someone went through the trouble of going to Japan, *bribing a resident of Nihon to trade their exclusive Sableye, TRANSFERED IT UP TO GEN 6, AND JUST GAVE IT AWAY.*

God that Gengar wasn't worth the trouble. So what likely happened was someone got a dump of a distribution cartridge and worked out a way to hack the ROM and change the distributed Pokemon. I was at that Platinum release event and the employees of Nintendo World were going nuts trying to stop people from using Mystery Gift that day. Also, the Toys R Us in Times Square cancelled the Arceus distribution because they claimed someone "hacked" it. The same dude must've been loitering in Toys R Us handing the damn things out. Had to go to Toys R Us in Union City NJ to get Arceus.

This comment had me google "Toys R Us in Times Square cancelled Arceus distribution" and i found a very interesting blog post from back when it happened that confirms it was indeed a "hacked Pokemon with an offensive name" that was being given out, so likely the same Gengar, and apparently it was at least the second time that happened to that Toys R Us store. So the guy was probably doing that at every distribution he could get to

Actually, digging through this deeper, i found old gamefaqs posts from that time mentioning that the offensive TRU pokemon was in fact a Probopass (sometimes mistakenly refered to as a Nosepass by some users) holding a Coin Case. This one seems completely undocumented and is probably from the same guy as the Gengar or at least related to it (the Probopass apparently didn't have a nickname though) EDIT: And another user mentioning a Jynx! Seems like this guy actually had a bunch of different offensive pokemon he distributed but only the Gengar became popular

I've obtained my Mew from my childhood copy of My Pokemon Ranch. I used TID manipulation to get 01000 as a trainer ID in Diamond which let me nickname it, and then collected all the ribbons it could get including the Mightiest Mark from defeating the 7* Mewtwo raid event

I'm not sure where you got the information about the 1,000 copies, but the original Pokemon Box was available via mailorder through one of the big magazines which I've forgotten the name of. I was one of the kids lucky enough to grow up with a copy. It's still pretty rare but it still had dramatically more distribution than 1,000 copies out of New York. I hope that doesn't come off as rude, I still love your content!

I have a legitimate copy of Pokemon Box (NA). I still haven't gotten the surfing Pikachu. For context, there are 386 pokemon in generation 3. That means you would have to catch essentially catch the national dex nearly 4 times over to get the surfing Pichu. Oh and you can't transfer it with surf to generation 4 because surf is an HM move.

Easily my favorite events are the themed events we'd see in gens 2 and 3 where multiple Pokemon were given a rare move that would drastically change how they played. Lovely Kiss was given to Poliwag, Bellsprout, Snorlax, Snubull and both Nidorans. Having this accurate of a sleep move on mons like Polwrath, Nidoking and Nidoking is incredibly cool and something that I really wish could be transferred to later gens. Much more well known are Gen 3's Wish Eggs, which were given to the most random of Pokemon. Pokemon like Hypno and Exeggutor make some incredible use out of Wish because they can combine the move with other rare moves to create incredibly unique sets that would otherwise be impossible. Ever wanted to use Wish to prepare for a Belly Drum or bolster the repeatable healing Harvest with passable healing? My favorite has got to be Salamance, which completely changes how the mon played and was especially synergistic with its Mega

I think you missed that you can still get Mew, even an infinite amount of them. Mew can be obtained in BDSP if you have a Let's Go save in the same profile as the save file you are playing. You can redeem as many as you want, since all you need is a new save file. You just need to make it to Floaroma and that should be it.

That mew isn't lost I literally have one. I don't think ant pokemon which is obtained from a game like ranch would be lost as ranch and box have much longer life spans than any in game distribution. There where some Japanese events released for ranch that could give you pokemon based on one's shown on pokemon Sunday. I think there was a meowth, a flygon and a very special octilary wearing a focus band on its model

Another sad thing with the racist Gengar event was there was a photo of a guy in a team rocket outfit that kept circulating with the story even though he had nothing to do with it. The Gengar also had a racist group initials for its OT. Looked it up a while back and wished Ihadnt. I bet it was one of the Gamestop carts for actual events that washt returned at the end. Someone could put any event they wanted on it. It’s partly why code cards and then wifi codes replaced in person distributions for the most part. I know it's not the main point of the video, but I still think the weakest Pokemon has to be Unown after all these years. The other answers can at least evolve/have other forms, so there's potential to be better. Not only does Unown have a narrower movepool than Magikarp, it never gets any better either. In one of my 3ds Pokemon games (I cannot recall at ALL if it was X or Sun) I wound up with a GTS-sourced Rayquaza from Japan with Pokerus, V-Create in its moveset, and it was **shiny**. I thought it was hacked somehow for a while, but apparently there was a rare event in Japan distributing this mon legit…? I’m not sure if that’s obscure enough for this video, though… The only mons in this video I had no clue about were the Surf Pichu and the Gengar…

That Rayquaza actually is hacked, the event that gave it out was shiny locked.

@@leori-7477 you might have confused it with Nobunaga's Rayquaza which was distributed around the same time and is guaranteed to be shiny, that one doesn't have V-Create though.

The Racists Gengar situation is really interesting, the only downside is that it's name is a slur, making this piece of history less wanted by most just because of its offensive nature, might be why there's not much information on it. And i doubt theres any University Magikarp around anymore, because of save file internal battery ect. They'd have to trade the Pokemon to another cartridge to actually keep it, and then do that every few years, and know about that problem exists. Although I'd definitely be interested if one of the original winners actually kept their's alive all these years

Pokemon Stadium has a much more reliable save format, so on the off chance someone registered a team with it to flex it could still be out there. Unlikely, and it would be arguable if it's legitimate being cloned like this.
