Pokemon is a pretty diverse game, and one thing that keeps the game interesting is the many different moves or attacks. With over 900 different moves as of now, there are obviously some that have risen to the top and have become widely used. However, not all Pokemon moves are equal, with some clearly being made to use during certain stages of the game. However, there are some moves that have just become forgotten or irrelevant. In this video, I wanted to share some old Pokemon moves that have been lost in time, as well as some cool facts about some moves that I found interesting.
If you find this type of content to be interesting, make sure to like and subscribe. Also, let me know any Pokemon video ideas you'd like me to discuss in a future video!

In gen 1, there's a move Gamefreak felt was so powerful that they nerfed it so badly into the ground that its secondary effect's chance was reduced by more than triple, yet despite being such a dangerous move in Gamefreak's eyes, hardly anyone remembers the move. I'm talking about Constrict. A 10 base power move with a small 33% chance to reduce speed by 1 stage. It was apparantly so broken that in gen 2 onwards, its secondary effect was nerfed to a 10% chance.

It was too powerful in gen 1, because a Pokemon that could learn Constrict, could also likely learn Wrap or Bind. And if you lower a Pokemon's speed enough that you get to move first, and you connect with a binding move every turn, the opponent literally can't do a thing to stop you. Or you can't stop them, if you get hit with the combo.

Fire Spin is a bit weird since the anime made it out to be way more powerful than it was ingame.
@CasualVideoGamer

It was entirely because in-game, if you were able to get something in that fire spin, you were able to trap it, preventing the target from escaping or attacking. It was probably Flareon's best move by level up (back when its special stat was only rivaled by Moltress for fire-type Pokemon).

To a lot of us who played Gens 1 and 2, the older moves are incredibly well known because the AI would use them constantly. A couple of interesting tidbits though: partial-trapping moves actually have a use in Gen 2 due to the generally slower meta and Seaking learning Waterfall allowed you to trade back Pokemon with it to Gen 1.

I liked how gen 1 had a lot of TMs that taught moves unavailable from TMs from future games. I always used to teach my Rattata Water Gun using the TM in Mt. Moon, just in case my Squirtle wasn't available to handle a Geodude attack. In gen 3, this TM is replaced by Bullet Seed. One weird tidbit is that Mewtwo can learn Pay Day via TM in Red and Blue, but not in Yellow. It's funny to imagine the world's most powerful pokemon opting to hurl handfuls of coins at its opponents.

Really interesting content! The old attacks used to be all over the place and made little to no sense. For a future video idea how about Pokémon that make no sense when it comes to their type, strength and movements. For example when Volbeat was introduced in the third gen it is a Bug Pokémon (Only physical in that gen) with more attack than special attack, who's signature move is Tail Glow, a movement that increases your special attack two stages. Or the Poochyena line who are Dark (a special move only category) and has more attack than special attack. I know because I use them in my own challenges XD New sub!

I actually started compiling a list just like this not even a month ago. And since I’m not a KZbin creator; I’ll give it to you and you can use it for part II of this video: All gen 1 moves: Comet punch - only learned by two Pokémon and easily overlooked by that of dizzy punch. Constrict - weaker than wrap and bind without the added bonus of ensnaring the target Bide - an absolutely atrocious move Take down - worse accuracy than both body slam & double edge whilst also doing less damage. Razor wind - a normal type attack for whatever reason also being a two turn move with meager damaged output. Slam - also worse than body slam and double edge with the added effect of only being able to be learned by a very small pool of Pokémon Sonic boom- an atrocious attack that only does a small set of damage every time it’s used plus only being able to be learned by a small cast of Pokémon. Hitmonlee having THREE signature moves: rolling kick, jump kick, high jump kick. The first two of which are just irrelevant Poison gas - only has 55 accuracy and is completely useless when toxic exists; Even smog is a better option Psywave- a broken move with terrible payout. Psychic is always the better option Hope this makes its way into a video

One of the more obscure Fire moves from recent games is Flame Burst. It had the unique effect of dealing not only its regular attack damage to the selected target, but an additional 1/16th damage to adjacent Pokémon (in doubles/triples) as well. Heart Stamp is another newer move that’s quite forgotten, being a rather obscure and weak physical Psychic type move.

Rock type pokemon weren't that rare. Yes, there was Geodude. And onix, rhyhorn, and the fossils. Other types that are equally rare are fire, fighting, ice, electric, and bug. Not even counting ghost snd dragon. So rock may seem pretty rare in gen 1, but so are half the other types. A lot of types typically only have 5 or 6 choices if you wanted to make a fully evolved mono type team. And some of those choices are typically a starter, eeveelution, legendary, or a pokemon line that trainers in game don't use and must be found in the wild or an event. The only types you can even consider making choices because theres more than 6 are basically flying, poison, water, and normal. Lol

Seen triple kick prominently in Colosseum as hitmontop was amongst the gen 2 pokemon available in the game. And it was specifically one of hitmontops' moves that would be unlocked after opening its heart. I never liked the move as it never did much damage, however, did appreciate it if I needed a move to dwindle down a shadow Pokemon's health just enough to where it could be easier to catch. So Colosseum is likely where it experiences being somewhat useful.

First move I thought of was Mimic... which I suppose doesn't make it forgotten, but it IS pretty useless outside of Gen 1. In that generation only, it allowed you to choose an opponent's move to temporarily learn. Gen 2 onward, it copies the opponent's most recent move. This is problematic if they go first, as they might bait-and-switch you and use a move you don't want. And even if you do go first, you still have to wait for them to use the move you want. By extension, Sketch is just awful outside of double-battles and the Mystery Dungeon games. Permanently learns the target's most recent move. Same issues as Mimic.

Remember Razor Wind? The move has been around since gen 1. Nothing was able to naturally learn it in Gen 1 and 2, only via TM02 in Gen 1. It's a 80 power normal type move with a charge-up turn after using it. A half-power Hyper beam. No wonder nobody remembers it, it's insanely bad. Even worse than that, it used to have only 75% accuracy in Gen 1 and 2.

While a lot of these moves are rare and almost never used, most have one defense. An iconic or memorable battle in the game has that move. If you're only considering competitive, sure, nobody ever uses Barrage, Grudge, Kinesis. But Sabrina's Kadabra has Kinesis in Yellow. Phoebe has a Banette with Grudge in Emerald, as well as in ORAS. Blue's Exeggcute and Exeggutor, including in the Champion battle, has Barrage in gen 1 (he doesn't have them if you chose Squirtle, otherwise it's there in all three games). Barrage and Kinesis I'll always remember thanks to the various solo challenges of those games, it's been too long since I last fully played Blue and I never actually finished Yellow as a kid. But Grudge I'll never forget. So many memories of playing Emerald, going through the E4 to train, reaching Phoebe, and losing one of my attacks because her Banette used Grudge before getting one-shot. As a kid, I was never one for strategy and balanced teams, so that would often lead to a defeat as my strongest attack was gone and I wasn't able to defeat her before my strongest Pokemon was defeated, and then a bunch of lower level Pokemon would easily get wiped by her. Even worse when I started using it to grind weaker Pokemon trying to get low level Pokemon higher levels to evolve for the Pokedex. Didn't have the same issue in ORAS, but she still annoyed me with it a few times there. Those are just for me personally, but I know a lot of these are less forgotten by those that really paid attention to the battles and don't just focus on competitive play.

In Mystery dungeon explorers of time/darkness basically all multihit moves were completely broken. (In casual play for me anyway) If your escort target wanders off and gets hit with a multihit move you can kiss that attempt (or 1-5 rather rare revive seeds) goodbye. Even if you're like 20 levels higher than a wild pokemon, a single neutrally effective multihit can kill you if it hits 4-5 times. In one spinoff game at least, barrage is really powerful.

In Gen 1, the way that the game would select moves for opponent Pokemon was by grabbing the last four moves the Pokemon could learn at the level you were facing them. Also, a good number of Pokemon, especially the stone evolvers, didn't have hardly anything in their level up list. For example, Exeggutor, started with Barrage and Hypnosis, and learned Barrage at level 28. And that was it. So, if you chose Squirtle as your starter, your rival, in the final battle, would use an Exeggutor (with a Special of 125) that only had Stomp, Barrage, and Hypnosis. It could learn a bunch of good Gen 1 moves, including Psychic, but for some reason, the only rival Pokemon that had "curated" move sets were the starters, and even they only had one selected move. Rhydon had two defense dropping moves in Leer and Tail Whip, Arcanine had Roar (which did nothing in trainer battles in Gen 1) and Ember as well. Guy had the probably the best Pokemon team in the game with the worst moves possible.

Imagine if Grudge had priority. Might be interesting competitively. If you’re in the red, your opponent has to choose their next move carefully or their best move becomes unusable for the rest of the match. Or you could switch instead, then you might get a free(ish) switch in depending on how they may have anticipated grudge.

I'd like to mention Rototiller, a move introduced in gen 6, removed in gen 8, that gives a +1 to attack and special attack of grass type pokemon. With the exception of Mudbray and Tapu Bulu, it's a lv.1 move for a handful of evolved pokemon (so effectively a move relearner move), and Tapu Bulu is the only actually grass type Pokémon that learns it at lv.38. I can think of zero instances I've actually encountered it in game, so when I think of obscure moves it often comes to mind :]
