Today, I will be sharing with you the intriguing tales of four English monarchs, each shrouded in the mysteries of their untimely and enigmatic deaths. One met his end by a dagger thrust in the back; another perished abruptly after drinking a cup of mead, succumbing to violent convulsions. A third monarch was fatally struck by an arrow during a routine hunting expedition. Another died with no explanation in any sources, however after his death his body was beheaded and thrown into the river thames, conveying foul play. In each case, the culprits responsible for these regicides remain obscured by the shadows of history. Regicide, the heinous act of slaying a king, has always been met with the most severe of punishments. Yet, the identities of these assassins remains a mystery. This is the story of 4 English Kings, who met tragic ends.

New subscriber here love european and british history - in particular the history of the british monarchy- i’ve long been a tudor aficionado but i’ve lately been going far back into the pre tudor history of the beginnings of the monarchy with the normans and the Plantagenets which is so fascinating with lots of history to mine and study for a lifetime

1) The noblemen theory seems objectively more plausible than the Dowager Queen one….but many queens and empresses have proven powerful women often are and can be much more ruthless than men - and her being the culprit behind it was my very first thought upon hearing the report of the Edward’s visit to her. 3) He drinks and 3 seconds after that has convulsions and suddenly dies?? Please… Even a toddler could tell that’s the result of poisoning. And the motive for that is because Harthacnut was a nasty tyrannical king. 4) This d3ath was clearly orchestrated of the Church (and the man who “mistakenly” hit the king instead of the stag their agent), who wanted William Rufus dead because he was gay and not a cath0lic fundam3ntalist who bowed down to their “divin3” commands. Also, the people probably hat3d him the same way they hat3d all the other ones who did the same, and certainly not because of his s3xual preferences or his court’s lifestlyle - something too far removed from their daily life for them to really give a fu*k about it at the end of the day.

Very good theories! 1- the Dowager queen would have help from the noblemen so it could have been both (my theory) 3- harthacanute was poisoned I agree! 4- This is a tough one! But I do agree the church probably orchestrated the murder! I’m torn between that and his younger brother, although I lean more towards the church due to the way he was recorded in history and their need to control everything! I am sure all the deaths were deliberate acts, especially William Rufas, an arrow so off target and hitting the king, not in an arm or shoulder but right in the chest, an accident is highly unlikely

1) First death: I see the noblemen being the ones to orchestrate the death. However, as you said, the dowager Queen knew how politics very well. She probably did not make the plan, but smart enough not to be against it. Perhaps even setting up the best conditions for the King to be without enough loyal guards. The fact no noble or soldiers were tried for assassination led later chroniclers to believe she was actively involved. 2) Death is more than likely an accident or illness. Little understanding of medical conditions back then, death could come quickly and the cause would not be detected. But to get beheaded after death? Not a popular guy. 3) In the USA 1,000 hunting accidents are reported annually with an average of 100 fatalities. Considering Royalty in those early centuries, I'm sure it happened often. There is a strong possibility the shooter realized no one would believe it was an accident, and ran. So many people helped him escape, speaks well of his reputation and demeanor, as it was an accident. 4) The convulsions speak to poisoning. Stroke would have had different effects, convulsions are rare. Garbled speech impediments, drooping face, and collapsing would be it. Convulsions would be seizures or reactions to poison. Since he's not recorded as having fits, it's unlikely it was epilepsy.

Actually my 1st thought was the groom himself, arranged the deed. But considering Godwin, THAT dude, I can't help but notice what a perfect set-up he may have thought he had, as perhaps Edward would be blamed, and he'd have the both of them out of his way. And given Godwin, ughh..shudder. Definitely not Edward though !!! Nope. Wasn't Edward. Anyhow, no matter how many nobles would certainly have despised the guy and wanted him gone, Godwin was very, very, power hungry and had eyes for the crown. Interesting note: Godwyne..as God/good wine! And, dang karma...Godwin himself collapsed after a banquet, leading to his death..Or?...was it a noble behind that, as well?!!.. i still think it was Godwyne.

on the death of harthacnut, queen emma of normandy... relative to duke rollo, william the duke of normandy & countess of flanders matilda,,, big shock or suprise, king edward the conffessor had viking* norman blood via emma,....he was not 100% saxon..., so that on emma death and his own... , it was just a continuation of norman relatives, as he was related to william the conqueror at least 3 different ways...

Harthacnut almost certainly died of stroke. He drained his cup, convulsed and died?that's not clear sign of poison lol. Poison isn't nearly so fast. Itd Be a hell of a poison. That's a clear sign of stroke lol

Some poison, especially when consumed via eating or drinking was incredibly fast. Cyanide, for one, was known to work within a few minutes. Actually, though, the poisoners preferred slow acting poisons to fast ones, so they could escape the scene before suspicion arose after the poisonee, if you will, became life threateningly sick.

william rufus , was no fan of the church, likewise they were no fan of him... the monks and clergy wrote various documents, and this bias against william rufus... for various vices etc is evident..., his successor: younger brother henry had much to gain, from removal of his older brother and robert curthouse his other older brother not even being in england...
