#AskEck Why are missiles mostly relegated to secondary ammo for fighters? With the prevalence of shields over armor, and the apparent ability of most solid projectiles to bypass most forms of enegry shields, I can see the advantage on building large missile-armed "artillery" destroyers. First: Sweet thumbnail image. Not familiar with the ship class but move the command section into the hull and it looks like something that could be relied on to carry its weight in a battle. Second: The term "Star Defender" could just be the New Republic playing word swap with the SD acronym (ala Star Destroyer) looking to present a more defensive stance, PR wise, in the usage of the ships as a contrast to the heavy handed aggressive nature reflected in the naming of the ships and classes of the Galactic Empire. Imperial/Republic SDs ranged in size from the Acclimator and Victory on the small side up to the ISD2 and its variants on the large side. The lack of "Super" in the Viscount's SD acronym also could be PR related since their goal was very unlikely to intimidate the citizens of the New Republic, once again in contrast to the Empire's "conform or else" approach.

Personally of all of those I think that Mass Effect kinetic shields and the Halo energy shields are tied for top place. @@xxvaltielxx1789 N7 are spec forces. I would say that both N7 and SA Marines will win. They are genetically enhanced (although not nearly to the same extend as an Spartan) and have kinetic barriers. In terms of weapons both forces seem to be equal. Altough if it was something bigger, like a UNSC regiment or brigade against a System Alliance one, I would probably side with the UNSC. SA forces seem to be more light infantry with some support vehicles and drones, the UNSC follows a more conventional combined arms doctrine, with tanks, artillery, air support...

The Strident Class Star Defender may be just a Battlecruiser analogue of Star Defender in most cases Star defenders are more then like a different version of naming for say Star Destroyer. So if you think about it that means that that can be any size ship about Star Destroyer size ships.

Iom gets buried in ships in the first week. Iom asks Tau for help. Tau anime betrays IoM because the Mantle is a little like the Greater Good. IoM asks help from Eldar. Eldar refuses because the skeins say they'll be goners. Forerunners then assault Terra. The Phalanx turns to paste in the first hour. Then, when things get even more grimdark, the Emperor comes back to life to save the day. Emperor destroys a million ships with his mind (because he can). A million more then comes 10 minutes after. Emperor gets buried in ships in the first week.

That's kind of a dangerous category, and hard to judge. The relative power level of an energy weapon is sort of up to the writers, which can lead to moments of absurdity (Think the Zat'NikTel from Stargate with it's crazy "one shot stun, two shots kill, three shots completely disintegrate the target") that are wildly out of sync with the core of the weapon. The other issue is differentiating weapon power from user skill. If a weapon never misses it's target, is that because the user is skilled or does the weapon have a sort of built-in barrel gimbal feature to help the user's aim?

I think that the whole "Star Defender" was a direct NR analogue to the "Star Destroyer" to the LOTF writer, which meant that it was an equivalent to the ISD ships, and would call a Super Star Destroyer a "Super Star Defender". I dunno though, I never got that far into the EU.

Militarized doe not mean good at military tactics and strategy and efficiency. It means the society overemphasizes and glorifies it's military. This does mean it probably has more guns, but it is more than possibly to be a stupid militarized society (like the First Order). That being said, the only way the First Order could destroy Godzilla Earth is if they lured it into Starkiller Base's barrel and fired.

At a certain point, the Star Wars universe is going to have to do what the US Navy did after WWI and then again in 1975 to standardize classification of vessel types based upon tonnage and mission profile, because everything is a "cruiser" and relative size and mission is nearly impossible with Legends content. Like Victorys become CAs (heavy cruisers) ISDs become BBs (battleships) Executors become something like BB(X) or BB(H) to designate they're huge Venators become CVAs (Assault Carriers, which almost were a thing in real life) etc., etc.

I think the discrepancy is not too difficult to resolve. Simple answer: all the descriptions are true. There is a Mon Calamari super-capital ship called a Star Defender the size of a small city, there's a CEC light cruiser hull called a Star Defender, and so on. The confusion mostly comes from people either simply getting things wrong (which happens all the time with military stuff - ask a history buff about the Schmeisser and MP-44, or try calling a self-propelled howitzer and an infantry fighting vehicle a "tank" in front of an Armored Cavalry trooper, if you want an example), or the generally-batshit naming conventions Star Wars uses for ships. Just some examples... Star _Destroyer_ - Big-gun battleship with integrated strike craft and ten thousand ground troops Mon Calamari Cruiser - wide range of hulls with examples ranging from lightly-armored ship-killers (i.e., WW2 destroyers) to heavily-armored battleships. I guess some of them _might_ fill a cruiser role... Assault _frigate_ - well-rounded ship mostly designed to attack other capital ships with gunfire (i.e., a cruiser) Marauder _cruiser_ - lightly armored guided missile frigate Old Republic _Dreadnaught_ - heavy cruiser/gun-type battlecruiser Lucrehulk/Trade Federation _Battleship_ - starfighter carrier and troop transport; nearly helpless without fighters and support ships About the only military ship type where Star Wars gets the name right is the... Actually, I was going to say the 'Quasar Fire'-class carrier, but apparently the full term for the ship type is _cruiser_ -carrier, so I'm just going to throw my hands in the air at this point. Several different groups using the same name for wildly different ships would fit right in.

The Marauder Cruiser's canon (within legends) armaments consist of 8 Dual Turbolaser Cannons, 3 Tractor Beams and a squadron of fighters. Similarly, the Lucrehulk Battleship is a Clone Wars modification of the Lucrehulk Carrier (which in turn is a modification of the Lucrehulk-class LH-3210 Cargo Freighter) designed to be able to stand up to capital ships: The pre-Clone Wars ship has 48 anti-capital guns and not much else, whereas the CW-era refit posesses 185 Point Defense Lasers, 520 Assault Laser Cannons and 51 Turbolasers. Granted, this thing could never fire all it's guns on the same target at once, but it still fits the battleship role better than some other designated battleships in Star Wars, in my opinion. Either way, its role puts it closer to a frigate or destroyer, though its size makes it only slightly different from the CR-90 corvette - despite still being called a "cruiser", regardless of role. As for the Lucrehulks, honestly most of my info comes from the Legends novel _Outbound_ _Flight,_ where a Lucrehulk without support ships or fighters is extremely vulnerable - though that might have just been the impression of the gutless Neimoidians who were running the things. Either way, once they ran out of friends, they pretty much immediately threw in the towel when faced with a half-dozen fighters and two light cruisers.

I'm designing my own battlecruiser. It has two massive 'ultra turbolaser' cannons and many heavy weapons along with a ventral hangar like the Venator but also a smaller rear hangar able to carry three CR90's and cram in a couple A-wings or Vulture droids. It's called the Terrodine class, able to take on three ISD's and half a dozen light cruisers without much of a problem it also has a PD system to help defend itself

I always saw the Viscount as a "super battle carrier" that doesn't have the raw fire power of an Executor but has more hangar bays and stronger shields.

I would imagine a Corellian Star Defender would resemble an Executor minus the cityscape, exposed bridge, and exposed shield generators. It would likely have fewer Turbilaser emplacements in order to accommodate a more balanced arsenal(laser cannons, point defense cannons, and perhaps torpedo/concussion missile lanchers). It would be a no nonsense utilitarian vessel that HEAVILY prioritized function over form.

my understanding is that the term star defender was originally intended to replace the term star destroyer and was used later to describe star dreadnought class vessels by mistake. most people put the Strident in the star cruiser or star battlecruiser size range

I'm thinking the Star Defenders were intended to be replacements for Star Destroyers as a type of ship - in Legends the ubiquity of the Imperial and Victory class Star Destroyers and the destructive power of the Super Star Destroyers kind of soured a lot of the galaxy on that design lineage. I also seem to recall that the presence of the Nebula-class as part of the New Fleet/Ship initiative caught a /lot/ of flack for being a Star Destroyer. So I'm thinking that the New Republic started calling their capital ships above a certain hull weight Star Defenders instead of Star Destroyers and identified the Viscount as one because calling it a Star Dreadnaught is kind of menacing in a way.

I personally believe that its about its Designated Role instead of its size. The MC30 was classified as a Frigate due to its mass more than just its length (assumption on ship classification), thus what differs is quite simple: Destroyer vs Defender. A ‘Star Destroyer’ is a more Offensive Ship than a Defensive Ship & a Star Defender is more Defensive than Offensive. So regardless of size, it could be how much Defensive & Offensive power it could produce, especially when shields, canons, & such run from the exact same reactor.

I think the strident, if it's a corellian design, is probably smaller than the average star defender. It's probably closer in size to a praetor than to a viscount.

I like "Star Defender" as an alternative to "Star Destroyers" when it comes to New Republic ships. Except for the ISD's they use.

I'm learning new ships almost every day. Adding these to my LEGO list. So, I've added the Viscount, Strident, and Galactic-class. I'd have to have custom figures made for these. Whom would you suggest?

I have an #askeck regarding Mon Calimari cruisers. The lore often states that each MonCal cruiser is "unique" but each time we see more than one on screen they look exactly the same. Where does the uniqueness come from? Is it internal or does it involve hull details and weapon placements we don't notice visually?

My assumption would be that there are minor differences in hull features, and possibly internal features. New RPG books have described certain differences in weapon loadout for the Home One and Defiance though (quad turbolasers for one, and dual for the other)

If the dreadnought was as big as you say it would had to have had 1000 turbolasers, 200 point laser canons, 4 ion cannons, and roughly 67 fighters squadrons and bombers and a crew of roughly 45000million!
