In the old days, many Native Americans believed that having a photograph taken of you meant that the photographer was stealing your soul. ->Max only gets her powers after she snaps a photo of the blue butterfly.

Actually Chloe can accidentally shoot herself if you tell Chloe to shoot the bumper of the car. Plus in max dorm room by her class schedule there are 5 flowers or pinwheels that symbolizes each time Chloe dies. Technically Chloe does die 5x.

I think it's so ironic that Chloe parks her car in 2 handicap spaces, and the game even gives you an option to steal from the handicap fund (while Chloe insists that they should) when in an alternate universe Chloe herself is handicapped. Intense foreshadowing early on in the game, love it.

Whenever a character says this, I always get an uneasy feeling because that's usually foreshadowing something big in the future of the game. I really hope I'm wrong and that doesn't happen, because Chloe and Max are so cute together :3

Sasaki Haise Maybe it'll be an option as a choice and we get a good ending bad ending kind of thing. *Spoilers if you haven't played episode 2 and 3* You know like saving Arcadia bay and having Chloe die means that Kate never attempted suicide because Nathan was convicted and she was able to bring up what happened to her. Then the Prescott family gets taken down and the city of Arcadia goes back to being a prosperous city. Or in the bad where Chloe lives Arcadia is destroyed and people you grew close to die, leaving Chloe and Max all alone (with or without the homeless lady depending on if you warn her or not) And then Chloe ends up dying anyways in the future by something else. I really hope Chloe doesn't have to die and there's a way around it.

I think Chloe is going to end up as the main antagonist of the game. By saving her in the bathroom, you give her a change to flap her wings. She eventually gets some power like Max, and causes the cyclone. Maybe this is out of revenge for something Nathan or others did to her and Max (i.e. getting Max kicked out of school, ruining their reputation/lives. which Nathan has the power to do with his money). To stop Chloe and save the town, you let her die in the bathroom. This causes it all to stop and create a "Good ending" for as many people as possible. The game becomes about Max's struggle to live her life in the moment and not be caught up in changing everything to her liking. It is an experience that teaches her to be more open and accepting of herself, and she ends up handing in that photo she tears up at the start of the game. Max moves on from what is keeping her held down, which probably has something to do with Chloe and mystery girl.

I agree with your theory and also believe that Max has lived through all of this before, maybe even multiple times, and keeps rewinding again and again but then forgets that she has rewound! You can see that when you rewind too much the screen gets red and Max holds her head like she is in pain. I think when she rewinds too far she forgets what happens and so now she is stuck in a time loop. I also think Amber had the same ability as Max. The question is - who is this mystery person Amber met that "changed her life" and made her leave Arcadia Bay? Is it Mr. Jefferson or someone we haven't met yet?

Oh my god this makes perfect sense. Especially how.. [[SPOILER ALERT]] When Max rewinds back to the day William dies and saves him, she comes back to the present and everything is all messed up. My bet is that she's going to have to go back and let him die to fix everything, but then with that- it 100% makes sense that she'll realize that in order to fix everything for good, she's going to have to go back and let Chloe die too. Welp I hope we're both wrong because if Chloe dies it's going to rip my heart out of my chest. Quite possibly the most upsetting video game death for me since Lee Everett in The Walking Dead.

This may sound weird but I believe Chloe saved Max's life. This video actually gave me a little bit of insight to use in that theory. I'm kinda thinking up the details as I'm writing so I hope I make sense. contains spoilers. So it is widely accepted that the blue butterfly is Chloe's spirit animal. or spirit. as is implied by its appearance in the sacrifice Chloe ending. Anyway so if this is the case why did it appear in the bathroom before Chloe was even dead? The butterfly was in fact the direct cause of Chloe's death. If max hadn't been distracted by the butterfly Nathan would have discovered Max in there and the confrontation between Nathan and Chloe would never have happened. and since Chloe was right behind Nathan it is likely that Chloe and Max would have reunited shortly after. either in the bathroom or the halls. So if that were to happen I think events would play out from there pretty similarly to how they played out in the game. Chloe and Max would have rekindled their friendship and go on to investigate Rachel's disappearance which would have led them to her grave. Chloe would have been killed by Mr. Jefferson and Max would have been captured and been his next victim. what's even more interesting ( as this video pointed out) is that the rose on her tattoo represents sacrifice, or in this case self sacrifice, and Nathan shot the skull on her shirt in the exact spot Chloe was shot by Mr Jefferson. I also believe that's why there isn't an alternate ending where Max can sacrifice herself for Chloe (which ironically is an ending that I've put a lot of thought into and this theory completely shuts it down) because if she tried, Chloe would simply sacrifice herself again creating an endless loop. Chloe can't stop herself or Max from dying. Only Max has the power to make that choice. which Chloe even says at the end of the game. "I can't make this Choice!" "No Max... you're the only one who can." It's probably wrong and I'm sure there are holes I overlooked but it's fun to think about.. Food for thought. Thanks for reading.

*DANGER: MY ENGLISH WILL MAKE YOU CRY* Now all my doubts point to the phrase "Think like a man". What does it *exactly* mean? Psichologists say that men and women think differently, women being more imaginative and intuitive and men being more realistic and methodic about life and society (through this is not a rule). Maybe it is related to Rachel and Chloe's dream about going to Los Angeles getting scrapped, making Chloe frustrated, less imaginative and more realistic... like a man. Maybe the blue bird represents Chloe when she used to think "like a woman" and the blue butterfly, that can only be blue if it's a male, represents Chloe thinking "like a man" through I'm not 100% positive about that. One think that keeps me thinking is how you can save the bird just as you can save Chloe, by rewinding. What if there is some sort of dimensional mind-break and Chloe actually exist on two realities just because she was supposed to die in one of them? That would explain her having two spiritual animals, one coming from a *window* alive (butterfly) and the other one dying at a *window* (bird). So why are there two spiritual animals representing Chloe on the same universe? Well, maybe two parallel universes mixed or something, you know this game is just as strange as life is and I'm really expecting a breath-taking plot twist. Whatever, I think I'm missing something important up there but that's the biggest part I wanted to get out of my head.

First she gets shot by Nathan, then she almost dies by getting hit by a train, in another reality she gets paralyzed and doesn't have long to live, then Jefferson kills her. As much as I hate to say it I think Chloe might get killed off but even if she doesn't there's still the tornado coming to Arcadia bay who's to say that wont kill Chloe too tbh I think there might be an Ultimatum deciding whether to save Arcadia or Chloe. Does anyone remember the men in black three movie, where that prophet alien guy with the sweaters and stuff says "Where there is death, there will always be death." In that movie, Agent K I think was going to die. Agent J saved him, but his father died instead of K. When someone was suppose to die, someone will die. In life in strange, that is the same thing. Chloe was suppose to die in the bathroom by Nathan, but Max interrupted it, and changed it. Four days later, the hurricane will come. Julie Torres SPOLIER OF EP 3 At the end max looks at apicture of her and chloe when they were 13 it was the day chloe's dad died. Suddenly she is able to go back in time to the day he died. Max hides his car keys so he cant drive so he gets the bus. But at the end Max goes back into the present time she goes to chloes house and he's dad opens the door and chloe is in a wheelchair with a windpipe in her throat. In ep 4 I think she will go back into the picture and kill her dad and tell chloe what happend.

So, this occurred to me after finishing the game, so i can't discuss it without warning people about SPOILERS!!! In one of the endings Max goes back in time to the bathroom with the help of the butterfly-photo, she does nothing and let's Chloe be killed. Another choice makes her rip the photo and they drive away from destroyed Arcadia Bay. Couldn't the two options be combined to have the best of both worlds? Max saves the photo as they leave the destroyed city. Then they live a long happy life as a married to each other and when they're both old and weak, Max goes back in time with the photo and saves the city. They would have had a long happy life together instead before and still save Arcadia Bay, if they didn't rip the photo and if Max would have her powers all her life... I'm not sure if others have thought of this, but i think it could have been worth considering...

+markotark It's not described officially during the gameplay, but I think the problem with that idea is that death is always looking for Chloe. We establish in the game that she was most likely meant to die at this point in her life,. We've seen it happen in a different timeline after her car accident and she dies multiple times in the current timeline as well. It's a lot like the Final Destination movies. If death doesn't get you the first time, it will keep hunting you until it's successful. I bring this up because I think the ending where you save Chloe and Arcadia bay is pretty futile. Death most likely is still right around the corner, waiting for Chloe. You see them drive away from a destroyed Arcadia bay, and in my mind Chloe doesn't last much longer than that scene because the balance is still upset. There's no way that Chloe would make it to old age because she'd probably die in a truck accident on the way to wherever they were going. It's sad, but that's how I interpreted the game and why I chose to sacrifice her. Also, the decision wasn't as hard for me because (unpopular opinion) I found Chloe to be incredibly irritating the entire game and took every opportunity to make sure Max ended up with Warren and not Chloe.

i realise this comment is a year old, but there is something you haven't taken into consideration. The photo is more important than you believe. judging by how the developers created both endings the "sacrifice Arcadia bay" is a "and they lived happily ever after" ending. now bear with me. In the ending we see Chloe and max driving off together in peace. there is no storm, its all over. Why? Its quite simple, as long as the picture of the butterfly is around Max can go back and fix everything the way the universe or destiny wanted it to be. however as soon as the picture is ripped up there is NO going back. What does this all mean? Well, destiny really likes having things it's own way so it keeps making things worse and worse trying to force max to undo the change. However due to the picture being ripped up the world can no longer be the way destiny wanted it to be so it takes Arcadia bay as a sacrifice instead. Conclusion, as long as the picture of the butterfly exists max CAN go back hence the universe will do anything to kill chloe. Could be a storm, a tsunami, or a meteor for all it cares. but as soon as its gone, the universe gives up and they live "happily ever after".

It just makes me wonder, if Chloe was supposed to die at the beginning why did Max suddenly discover the power to rewind time right when she wanted to save her. Also, letting Chloe die after you had to go through all this kind of feels like a betrayal - for what reason did I even play the game then if everything I did was for absolutely nothing? And what about Max? She still has all those memories of what she went through. During the ending where Arcadia Bay gets destroyed she at least has a friend by her side who went through the same together with her (also, people say that no one in the town survived but how can we know for sure - the game never shows conclusive information about that). During the ending where Chloe dies Max still has all those memories but she is completely alone with it because to the other people it never happened. I still need to finish playing through the game myself and though I tend towards picking the ending where Chloe dies since it was probably the rather intended "good" ending for the game I am still not completely sure if I actually will go for it. Mainly because of of that feeling of betrayal - "here, have a game in which absolutely nothing you do matters and before the last credits roll you will end up at the beginning anyways. We hope you enjoyed your massive kick in the balls."

Thanks to Max's power she was able to see her childhood friend again, she didnt care for 5 years and almost forgot. The gift is like spending 5 days with someone you love you will never see again. Otherwise Chloe would have died in front of Max without Max even recognizing her friend. But I know what you mean, It really bothers that Chloe in the end also dont have these memories. She just ends up dying angry, sad and unaware of everything. It's really depressing that even as the player they dont give you the power to make a happy ending happen.

They were able to find out what happend to Rachel, which they would never have if not for Max's powers. They got to spend time together which they will remember forever. Sure Chloe is dead but in an timeline she knows that max did everything to save her and was nothing but the very best friend she could ever have. I strongly believe that the powers were gifted to max by Rachel or Chloe. I also find similarities between life is strange and Donnie darko.

Just my crazy theory about this game : Max and Rachel are the same person. Not sure, could be multiple personality disorder, space-time warp or other things. Notice the similarity between two selfies : Max-Chloe and Rachel-Chloe : Position of Max's tied hair-Rachel's feather ear ring, Max and Rachel both have blue eyes. Chloe says "Rachel saved me". Max saves her too, twice and probably will do that again. Max and Rachel are both Chloe's savior because they are the same person. Max never contacted Chloe after she left to Seattle, well, why would she do that for? She was always with Chloe, under Rachel disguise. Chloe says Rachel's parents in denial. Does she know them personally or just heard some rumors? How if Rachel's parents never exist? This could be the reason why Sergeant Shithead is paranoid, maybe he knows Rachel's parents never exist but never tells anyone. He's afraid everybody will laugh at him. Or he's a conspiracy theorist who thinks Rachel is a CIA agent in disguise bla bla bla. And the local cop is too busy licking Prescott family's rich asses, they never care much to search a missing person so they never realize such a person never exists. In the cafe where her mom works, Chloe jokes about Max could make a move on her and rewound time after that so she couldn't remember. Max replies like "Yep I did that." Max's sub-consciousness tells the truth? She indeed did that to Chloe... as Rachel? Max got her scholarship in July 2013. That's about two months after Rachel's disappearance. I think Max (Rachel) suddenly suffered amnesia in May 2013 (possibly accident or using powers too much). Oh, and the incoming hurricane, probably is the consequence for Max who plays God.

I also think Rachel was murdered by Jefferson (the photography teacher), perhaps he pushed her off the cliff or something like that. If you read Max's diary, Max admires Jefferson so much that she wants to marry him. Since she and Rachel are basically the same person, it's no wonder if Rachel also liked Jefferson very much. Rachel could be pregnant, they argued near a cliff (lighthouse cliff???) and Jefferson killed her in anger. Seconds before she died, she used the rest of her power to warp space-time and boom! The new Rachel returned to life, but with new identity and amnesia (Max). To help picturing this, since this is a Square Enix game, FFX/FFX-2 Tidus-Shuyin may be a good comparison for Max-Rachel. Max's amnesia refers to her memories of Rachel, not of her own life. I said hurricane is caused by Max plays God. Well, it's also possible the hurricane is Rachel's wrath for being murdered, and the only one who can stop her is her other self (Max).

Jack Tournesol I too think that Rachel and Max are the same person, though Rachel could be a part of Max's psyche - the psyche that Max wishes to be or a future/past version. Remember how Max idolizes Chloe and wishes that she was more outgoing and confident like Chloe? There is even a comment in episode 2 where Chloe says how Rachel would love Max as how she is similar to Max in being artistic and friendly? If I remember correctly, Max even mentions in Chapter 2 how Amber is like Chloe and herself when she is in the room in the junkyard scene. Is it possible that in the original timeline that Rachel never existed and that maybe something really terrible happened to Chloe between Max leaving to Seattle and going back to her hometown? Maybe Max in a future timeline went so far back that she became Rachel to be there for Chloe while Max was gone. I am thinking that maybe Max/Rachel fell in love with Chloe in the original timeline and couldn't tell her how she felt because by the time she came back to Blackwell and saw Chloe, she died by Nathan or by someone else before the game starts. Maybe Chloe became so out of control in the original timeline she died a few months after Max moved to Seattle. Therefore, she went back in time to save Chloe.

In the trash was a letter talking about being with a guy and she couldn't tell chloe (but now that I am thinking about it Jefferson makes sense... needing to be a secret) and that is why he has the bracelet. But maybe he took it when they drugged her at one of those parties. It will be interesting to see what they make of it. It's gotta be something no one is expecting, and I am interested to see what happens with the Jefferson character. The 14-years old Max used her powers to rewind time so she didn't need to move to Seattle along with her parents and she could stay close with Chloe, but her action caused split personalities in warped dimensional and space-time blah blah you know, that Back to the Future things LOL. So Max was in Seattle and Max 2 (Rachel) was still in Arcadia Bay. Jefferson murdered Max 2/Rachel, her anger somehow triggered Max's return to Arcadia Bay. Lighthouse cliff could be where the murder happened. Rachel was pregnant, she told Jefferson, they argued near the lighthouse, and Jefferson angrily pushed Rachel off the cliff. Since this is a Square Enix game, I think we can compare Max-Rachel to FFX/FFX-2 Tidus-Shuyin.

Jack Tournesol There was a similar theory, someone said that Max and Rachel both had slightly distinctive but similar features, the theory was that Rachel's is Max's sister, and Rachel possessed the same powers as Max did, and entered an alternate dimension where there some sort of time unbalancing. Maybe that's why watering the plant and doing simple things had consequences, that Max supposedly enter the alternate dimension, maybe Rachel saw Chloe's death and this follows along with the blue jay god, that she tried to go to the land of the dead goes on.

Jas Marie About Chloe, she wants to drop a bomb on Arcadia Bay and turn the town to glass (this refers to nuclear bomb explosion). I think she's possessed by Rachel's vengeful spirit. My guess is the last boss will be Rachel-controlled Chloe. Perhaps we will try to prevent her from sabotaging a nuclear power plant.

It's now a finite, deterministic timeline with one outcome: Nathan being unable to use his money to hide his crimes and people finding out the eventual truth about the Darkroom, etc. It's not chaos theory anymore. It's just one timeline. This explains so much. I was very confused on how sacrificing Chloe simply stopped the tornado from occurring. Now I know. Thanks so much. Third time, the eclipse. Chloe gets directly linked to the chain of weirdness in Arcadia Bay because her death initially triggered the fractured timeline. Freak weather is just one of the many ways the butterfly effect can manifest itself. The game is just using that as a plot device to show us the consequences of rewinding and messing with timelines too often.

Very intelligent observations about the colors and equilibrium of life. I'm thinking good people have to be sacrificed and die for bad people to face their karma. If it's not with Chloe's death, then the hurricane must be the other way. Also black and white have powerful meanings associated with them. Black representing power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery while white represents light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Notice how Chloe wears these during the part where she gets deep into her story. While she wears a black jacket, she talks about Rachel and the much negativity that was dwelling in her life, that is her coat of black. When Max finally comes back into her room, Chloe no longer is wearing her black coat, she starts showing more of her brighter side and you can see how she can be likeable and the good in her, smiling a lot more. Deep within that white, there is still blackness. I'm thinking we get to uncover that more as we progress through the episodes. The skull with black outlines being painted on white could symbolize that death is the needed evil to balance out the white. My theory is, without Chloe's death, the corruption of the rich keeps on going, snowballing and becoming into something much bigger and that really explains the hurricane being there to balance it out, wiping a corrupt community because Max unintentionally let it grow in size. As I stated, death balances out the white, innocence, and now without that necessary evil, everyone, including the innocent and pure has to suffer for it due to imbalance.

From the description of the Blue Jay's symbolism, I think that it is actually Max's spirit animal, as she travels in an out of different time lines, where people are sometimes dead, or not dead, compared to the timeline she lives in. Hence, travelling to the land of the dead to help her sister...this being either Chloe or Rachel :) Spirit sisters ;)

((THIS IS TRUE, if you don't believe me, watch a video of the ending at episode 2)) Towards the end of episode 2, Chloe mentions how much she wants to "drop a bomb on Arcadia Bay and turn into into glass", in other words, she wants the town destroyed. Right after Chloe said that, Max got the vision of the rain and the tornado, then Max lost conscious. But when she awoke, it started to snow and ever since, strange things happened. I think Chloe is the cause of the end of the world.

Geek Remix well some of this is really clever, good job, have my credit (sarcasm free). But I'm just hoping it wouldn't come to another super overly sophisticated/mindblowing ending with paranormal mysteries and UFOs or something like that. I really do. IMO that's cheap and it would outshine everything else beautiful in the game. I hope it would be clarified simple and elegant. Oh and btw I believe Nathan is not that bad, seems to be heavily influenced and the prick isn't even smart to be antagonist. I think it has something to do with the nature and the catastrophy, it has green thing going all over the place and Max is the hand of it (presumably). I bet something's horribly wrong with the Vortex club and that is the key. And sorry if I offended you in some way, didn't mean to

Terramine Light thank you, how kind. Certified engineer here, I do thinking for living. I just like those characters and storyline so much and usually when something mindblowing happens at the end it feels like those characters and everything else that you loved didn't really matter. It was just a set-up to blow it, no more. Complexity's good, but if you make a complex story, you should consider it from start to finish. Watch Twin Peaks which LiS is heavily influenced by, you'll know what I mean. Or even worse, writers lately like to make plot twists for the sake of plot twists and it gets ridiculous fast, like in Lost

Just finished the game with two very good friends of mine. We kept taking turns with the controller, but we always negotiated every question and option before going on, and often went back to see what would make what in the immediate questions that appeared more important than others. Your guesses were spot on. We're currently watching the directors commentary and those two are really amazing :) Oh, and this game reaaaaaaaaaaaally made me cry in the arms of one of my friends. He recently had a hardship and the game reminded me of it. So yeah....I was glad that he is still with us... Awesome game and awesome analysis from back in February 2015 :)

You were so right about Chloe, at least with the Sacrifice Chloe ending--and I think you were right re the Sacrifice Arcadia ending, too. In both cases Chloe is one hundred percent the Great Equalizer, but in one case the death she manifests is her own, and in the other it's everybody else's after Arcadia is sacrificed in her name (rather than her being sacrificed for it's comfort Omelas-style).

My theory is that max will try to rewind to the picture taken in the bathroom and let Chloe die to restore the balance of things. She has already tried to change the outcome for people and it ended up messing things up even more. If she lets the timeline go on like it should, Nathan would be busted by the cops for killing Chloe because there wouldn't be any denying it. Kate probably wouldn't go to the vortex party and have that viral video about her. Therefore she wouldn't be suicidal. But max has to ultimately decide if she should save Arcadia bay or Chloe. Side note, I find it interesting that Rachel goes missing in either timeline. Maybe if she finds a photo from 6 months ago she could rewind time and prevent Jefferson from kidnapping her, assuming the 2 are linked. Sorry for the long post

If the theory is true, then the sentence, when you rewind in the "tutorial", "What have I done?" makes sense. I don't know if you already thought about it, but if the death of chloe stops the hurricane, and Max finds out about it, then it totally makes sense. lol Actually I still hope that she doesnt have to die. Also, I dont know how 1 life can conjure a hurricane.

This is gonna be hard to explain The heavy symbolization of the butterfly is a symbol of the butterfly effect where if you alter a timeline there are negative side effects that will hurt the future. Basic description: max fucks up time so bad that the side effects are huge. Chloe is supposed to die if chloe died everything would be right have you noticed the times shes been killed almost? The gas bumper the train tracks. Time is trying to reverse itself

chloe is a liar, i think she already knows something about Max and her power: there are all the tags "don't trust me" , there is the tag "can my dad be ok?" "regarded"(foutain, ep1) Normally Max's power influence the others, but at the beginning of episode 3 we can see that chloe continues to send sms to max (and not the sames) eventhought you rewind, that is strange, and dv seem to insist on that. And also when you are about to steal frank's keys, chloe said something as "you steal the keys and rewind", how does she know that max can do that (rewind AND keep the keys), and at the end chloe left graf to Max to say something that "amber is a bitch" (we can see it's chloe who wrote because of grafs in episode 2 ("chloe was here/rachel was here....") I don't think Chloe wants to find Amber for the reasons she gives.
