I was born in Paris and lived there in 2008-2009 and I can write a dissertation on how social media has really distorted people's perception of Paris. I love the city like a spouse, I always want to go there, and I will always see the beauty of it. But it's still a city with real people, not a playground for Instagram. And every now & then, usually when protests happen if we're being honest, the world is reminded of that fact.

Foreigners in Paris tend to spend their time in the wealthier parts of the city and seem to block out the reality of the cost of being dressed stylishly in designer outfits. A Chanel suit can cost as much as a car! In Paris, like everywhere else, only few people have the euros to spend that sort of money. Even the less exalted brands are not budget friendly! Thank you for the video!

My cousin lived there for 10yrs. I was shocked that her boyfriend’s car only had two front seats because he would be taxed for every car seat so I had to sit unsecured on a ledge in the back of his car 😂 They were taxed on every appliance, even the tv so no watching tv all night like I do in the US 😂 AND they lived on the top floor of a beautiful old building with no elevator so once we went out for the day, there was no going back unless it was absolutely necessary or else it’s a 6th floor walk up 😂 I loved visiting her. This video appeared on my feed, and I immediately subscribed after watching it. I was only able to spend 2 days in Paris, and I was extremely nervous because of these stereotypes you mentioned. I'm not well-to-do and have a mid-size physique. However, I blended in surprisingly well, and most of the French people I met were unbelievably helpful, sweet, kind, and, well, normal. I remember going into a chocolate shop, and the saleswoman spoke zero English while I speak zero French (besides bonjour and merci🤣). We both played an incredible game of charades in order to communicate, plus I utilized some assistance from Google translate. She was so patient and friendly and threw in some freebies for me to try. It is still the best chocolate I've ever eaten, and I can't remember where it was because it was just a small place on a tiny random street that I happened to wander into😅! Thank you for debunking some of these myths. I hope to return to France some day😊.

American women absolutely LOVE to romanticize France and especially Paris specifically. It's ridiculous, but I sort of understand it also, we all just want to have some kind of fantasy escape from what our real lives are like. That being said, it's definitely not right to be writing books about "how to be a French girl" that make all kinds of assumptions about an entire country as if every person thinks, acts, and dresses the same, or indeed that every person is wealthy and can afford $10,000 Chanel suits and beach vacations whenever they want. I think people have gotten way too deep into this fantasy these days.

Paris is amazing and beautiful, and I do think most French people have better style than the average person, but I agree that there is immense diversity and it is silly to perpetuate an untrue stereotype. Just returned from 2 weeks in Paris and saw many many “normal” Parisians - who were all different and individual, just like New Yorkers or San Franciscans. I don’t think that trying to convince people that everyone in Paris is incredibly beautiful, stylish, wealthy and chic is good for anyone - it makes others intimidated to visit, and holds Parisians to an impossible standard that I’m sure many have no interest in striving towards.

People of different origins live in Paris. This cliché is nonsense, even the wealthy are all different.I mean the "French style" is a style that is simply called that, perhaps inspired by code from some of the great Parisian fashion houses, I don't know. But Dior, Chanel etc. don't practice that, at least today. Today's clothing from these brands is different from this cliché, they are innovative and changing. Yes, it is simply a name for a certain style in fashion.

Things have changed over the years with the Amercanisation of the global diet and the predominance of fast fashion. Where I live, people have also grown heavier, started wearing Western clothes all the time instead of tailor-made traditional clothes, and changed work and school schedules so there is no longer a long break for siesta and family time. It's very sad. I won't address the idea that French people are toxic in romantic relationships, except to say that's not what I get from French novels or télévision. Merci pour finalement nous montrer comme nous sommes. Vive les français et bonnes vidéos 👍

The actual audacity of someone telling you--a french man--to dress "better" because that's more French. Wild. The Parisian girl is marketing. It's make believe for the most part. That's why this is so infuriating.

I love your destruction of this myth. I nevertheless admire French culture, food and lifestyle. I am from Frankfurt am Main. I have very often been to France and spent several months at Neuilly. Between Germany and France are some similarities (regulated economy etc.), and of course a few differences, esp if you compare it to the US. But regarding how to dress French people have more style, they think about what to put on. My sons play Rugby and we are often in French province, like Mulhouse, Besançon, Versailles. People arent dressed up like Emily in Paris, for sure. But the food is better and women are more feminine. Fundamentally, I agree with, but I would love to start a match with you. 😀👗

"Emily in Paris" style for me is more like cute /kawaii Lolita style from Japan, playful and over the top. "Parisian style" = relaxed, chic, simple, natural and quite basic - hair in natural color and texture, natural fabrics like cashmere, cotton, oversize blazers, long flowy dresses, ditsy /small prints, dark and neutral colours, cuts are loose , not super tight, basic make up with natural eyelashes red lipstick. Also no fillers, no fake eyelashes, no colourful hair.

I prefer Amelie over Emily. 😊 French people sit in sidewalk cafes with their French poodles, smoking cigarettes, and drinking champagne.😊

We loved Emily in Paris. She was irritating as heck, but it was a nice escape from being shut in during COVID. We know most people aren't like that. But you know when people tour the world we don't want to see copies of ourselves. It is a cliche, but it does promote tourism, which provides a living for many people.

Thank you SO MUCH for talking about it! I appreciate it a lot. I’m also so tired from this cliché. I want to feel the real Paris and everywhere it’s so much of instagram Paris, not the real one. Moved to Paris 8 months ago and searching for its real spirit.

As someone from the North in the UK, it equally annoys and amuses me that people actually think London is a representation of all of us, when it's very far from the majority of us. London is a bit of an enigma and is very different from almost every single place in the UK. I find North West people very on a par with the South West, Midlands and have very similar humour. Scottish, Welsh and Irish similarities to Northerners, but in truth when I've visited London I feel more disconnect as an English person than anywhere else and I have felt more at home in the South of France when on holiday. The clichés of different people annoys me because it almost becomes a caricature of the people as a whole. I can truly understand how you want to put the record straight because that's how misunderstandings occur in more serious situations....we all need to break the mould of being represented the wrong way! 👍

I'm from Argentina and I hadn't heard that stereotype until I learnt English and started listening to what the girls say on the internet and I couldn't understand those stereotypes about beauty and French women in particular. But before that, I didn't understand why people would call Paris the city of love, I never wanted to go there because everyone likes it 😂 it's so many people's dream to go to Paris that I'd rather have another dream. But maybe it's just me who found that annoying. Maybe Paris is, in fact, great! Idk.

I met some French exchange students when I was in high school. I'm American and hadn't met anyone from another country before (I lived in a medium sized town- not a city). I quickly realized that the students weren't all that different from us. Sure, there were cultural differences and language. But the things they enjoyed doing and the way that everyone interacted with each other were pretty typical of any other teen at my school. I can't say I ever really thought about what people from other countries were like as a kid- prior to my school taking exchange students that is. The internet was new back then. Fortunately, I don't think I ever bought into these stereotypes for that reason.

As a French person having lived in Paris, but now in the South West of France, it would be really nice if people, French and foreigners alike, would stop equating French people as a whole and Parisians. Yes, Parisians are French, but they live in a specific city, and have different lifestyle, than the people in my region for example. France is not that big compared to some other countries, and Paris is the capital with most of the museums and culture, but even just going from the South West of France to the South to going to Paris, one can see the differences in culture, lifestyle, architecture, food, clothes, accents, history etc… France is an incredible country, and Paris is just one city. Paris is not France. France cannot be reduced to Paris, thankfully!

A question to Americans: do you think New York is like Gossip Girl? If no then you’ve got your answer about Paris clichés
@lequoiscontreonu2 ай бұрын
I think not only Parisian style but local styles in Europe are real thing. If you go to Eastern Europe the style of young women is about showing off -colorful nails, mini skirts, stilletos, bleached hair, fake thick eyelashes, tight clothes, synthetic fabric, tanned skin, cleavage, fillers in lips. You will see high heels and mini skirts in supermarket and in church. Its high-maintenance and it keeps myriads if beauty salons going ( they are as common as bakeries). And I don't mean that everybody looks like that but it's frequent enough to to spot it. Also people are easily influenced by what they see in other people and they try to copy it to fit in that's how local styles are made.

I love the French style cliche, but somehow always knew it was an ‘idealized’ image of France and her people. It is like how Americans in T.V./movies seem to be rich robber barons and wealthy, beautiful and bitchy women, or in the other direction, severely overweight people living in poverty. These are polar opposite degrees on a spectrum, with most somewhere in the middle.

As an admirer of France, its culture and its artistic heritage, I was interested in this video. I am well aware of the silly clichées spread by the ignorants in charge of the media, particularly in the Anglo-American world; however, your unbearably long and unnecessary introduction ruined it for me. Adieu!

I have just witnessed a dawn of true inter-nationalization as opposed to globalisation. I would like to see the different world through someone decent,down-to-earth and intelligent like you. Quiet, but strong. Thank you.

travelling to/imagining Paris, while keeping Emily in Paris in mind as standard, is the same as keeping K-pop in mind while travelling to Korea. They might or might not be true representation, cause they’re mostly for entertainment purpose.

I do appreciate this video a lot. Since I was young I always thought that somehow Parisian women were superior from the rest of the world. Then later in life watching other kind of french productions and influencers I saw that they were just like another women that take care of themselves and that are chilin and relax. We have plently in America! is not frenchie exclusive. I got tired of videos like how to look like a french woman, how to dress, how to talk, how to live, how to poop jajajaja LOL Oh for my dear life! i am glad I am not alone on this.

I lived in Paris in mid 80’s. The stylish French women were 70-80 yrs old. They have died out and their children are not stylish. They dress more like people in Montana

Haha I'd love to take a picture of real Parisians and french residents.. yeah most of them, they always look presentable.. but the cliche is just over the top.
