Go with me here because this happened in the film industry multiple times and it's the exact thing ruing the NBA play style. - The Bourne Identity drops in 2002 and displays an entirely new cinematic fight scene concept. The fights were cut into 5-10 second long clips of mixed close up shots that made it feel like you were in the fight yourself. Beautifully done. So well done that every action movie from 2002 to 2012 and still some today have quickly cut and stitched together shots including extreme close ups. Almost NO film ever got it right until John Wick used that method and expanded on it by introducing gun-fu which is long sequences of choreography based on a few old niche Chinese movies. - Avengers drops in 2012 popularizing the beaten dead overused movie trope of "a beam of energy from the sky that will end the world" that was used in almost every mid-to-bad comic/adjacent movie until 2020 and I'm sure some still use it. Same thing happened in the NBA where the Warriors introduced a new style of play that relies entirely upon 3 point shooting. It was beautiful and history was made. Unfortunately, we are now seeing what we saw in the Film Industry and it's just as blatant if not worse. Copycat Syndrome is mimicking something, sometimes without fully understanding it and the same way those writers/directors didn't understand the styles they were imitating is the same way these coaches/organizations don't understand the Warriors. *These guys are NOT Steph Curry and they are NOT the Warriors* and imitating that play style without the necessary pieces is detrimental to the product as a whole. Slight correction: the shot clock was first introduced to college basketball, because of the dominance of the John Wooden UCLA Bruins. That’s the team who the strategy was created to fight against, and it lead to many games ending in scores of like 20-10, or 17-13. So you were right about the 50’s era being when it was first introduced, you’re right about the reason why it was introduced, just off on which team and league they were playing in.

Ppl talk like they didnt have stat nerds back in 2010. The 3pt shot is so valuable now because you can shoot balanced since guys are catching a pass with 2 foot on the floor and then shuffling their feet to square to the basket, no call. They step back with 4 steps, no call. The offensive side of the ball have NO RULES basically. That's whats killing the game. You can catch a pass, hop, shoot. Pay attention, players do this all game, every game. No call. Sometimes they catch a pass and do a quick 1,2,3 footwork before the shot, it's insane the difference of percentage you can get by doing that compared to keeping your pivot foot and steping into a shot or hopping before you catch the ball.

I think an underrated reason is how the draft/rookies don’t really turn teams around. If you are a bad team, you basically need to hope a good free agent wants to come to your team. Look at the NFL vs the NBA, the Texans have new life and fans feel like they are contenders… contrast that with the NBA, if you get a good player, it probably won’t turn your team around, and after their rookie extension, they will probably leave for a big market.
@BLee0910 сағат бұрын
That's not really true. You got luka, Ant, Ja, Trae young for a couple of years had the hawks back relevant as well. Rockets turning things around with sengun and jalen green. Look at what giannis and jokic have done with their franchises.
@tropicmix876510 сағат бұрын
@@BLee09those are exceptions not the rule, and Giannis wasn't that level of player until several years after he was drafted. Trae is all star good but not superstar good. Not to mention, even if you get a Luka or Jokic you need to have the pieces around them to win because every contender has minimum two top 25-30 players. So even when the Pistons or a team like that gets a guy like that, his confidence is immediately destroyed because he can't beat those teams alone. It's like any quarterback that went to the Browns before Baker.
@BLee0910 сағат бұрын
@tropicmix8765 bruh what? I named 7 different teams that turned their franchise around through the draft, and that was just off the top of my head. Of course you have to build around them. It is not just that teams shoot so many three’s. It’s the elimination of positions. When I watched the recent draft… players were listed as Guards, Wings, Bigs. There used to be defined positions, with coinciding roles. Because of the emphasis on the three point shot, all players are by default, are forced to play the same way. There is one outlier and that has been Denver and Jokic, who shoot on average 12 threes a game. The year they won the championship, they were near the bottom of the league in three point attempts. “The most efficient way to win”~ this is such a general assessment, by efficient does this mean shooting percentage? The 80’s and 90’s the had the highest overall shooting percentages. The games were more competitive, as the defense had a fair chance. The rules adjusted too far in one direction. It wasn’t necessarily the hand check, but the other rules, that weren’t enforced (moving screens, carrying, traveling, offensive fouls) Then the zero/gather step, freedom of movement, gave players even more of an advantage offensively ~ a subject that has led the narrative that modern players are more skilled… Which many OG fans have noted, that if they are so skilled why do they need these rules..? Then there’s analytics. It has changed the way players are evaluated, and it has eliminated post play, and mid range from the game. Fundamentally changing the game. The modern game is completely a different game of basketball, and what we are seeing is how many fans aren’t interested in watching. Now Gil’s take is a straw man argument, because the ratings in question have been the nationally broadcast games. The games available to most audiences for free. That was the measurement. The viewership for the NBA finals were down… and the ratings continue to decline for these games year to year. It’s the same thing for the illegal streaming argument. That’s not what was being debated. It was solely based on nationally televised games. Those arguments shift the goalposts, in order to defend the product on court. Those arguments don’t address the issue of the on court product. The long term consequences are that throughout American basketball system, from the youth leagues, high school, AAU, college, NBA, young players are developed and mimic the NBA. As a result the players are not even learning how to play in the post. They are taught and play the game the exact way the NBA plays. What’s the use of having a 7’0 player play like a 6’3 player? So you won’t see a young big, talented enough in all areas to challenge a Jokic… or a Giannis to a lesser degree, Embid when healthy.. Anthony Davis. Who is primarily a face up big. If there were guys developed in this manner, teams would and could still win games, it would change strategy, especially if the rules that favor the offense were scaled back. Anyway the genie is out of the bottle , and there’s no going back… the ratings will continue to decline… even the old way of marketing players has run its course. Prior to Jordan ascension in the 90’s… the NBA marketed the game and not individual players… there were rivalries, and players matched up against other great players… something you rarely see in todays game with the spread offense, and the switching on every play… trying to find the mismatch. Fans miss the individual battles ~ Kobe versus T-Mac.. as an example… The Bigs who would match up… even point guard matchups were fun to watch. They increased the competitiveness in the players. It’s alot to dislike about the modern game. The rules, the amount of threes, load management, the lack of defense, the lack of player matchups, the lack of rivalries, the media coverage… Scoring and stats have become so easier to acquire, getting a triple double is no longer considered great… because they happen so often and are so easy to obtain. I mean players don’t even have to box out and secure rebounds anymore, because all the bigs are in the corner or on the perimeter. I’m starting to see younger fans grow tired of this as well, and they are highlight driven, and have short attention spans… they are not watching games start to finish, they watch the game clips, and look at box scores.

Regarding networks, its just too many cooks. It is the NHL MLB problem. Too many and they are all spread too thin and all have different rules about if streaming is allowed. It is messy and expensive. It may not be fair to compare since it is less games and it is set days each week but the NFL has nailed it, limited networks, all available and able to be put under streaming freely. They have their own bad decisions coming as they add networks and paywall stuff which is messy but overall the unbiased commentary from set casts on set networks and channels works very well. I know its not 1 -1 due to the amount of games but... if they can find a way to secure that the NBA would fix a lot of their off the court issues regarding viewership

You seen the details coming out of the Maxey/Philly team meeting? Shit like that would have never happened pre-2010. IDK why a dude making a quarter of a billion dollars for dribbling a ball can't show up to practice. Marketing is also, like you pointed out, a huge fucking mess. All I see on ESPN is LeBron and Bronny, Bronny stories dominating headlines even when he's playing like a bum in the G League. When LeBron was having his 3 straight triple doubles against trash can teams, Jokic was on his 4th straight triple double. Fucking averaging a 30pt triple double. Not one headline. You could have easily had an amazing marketing campaign of Jokic vs Giannis or Luka vs Tatum but the NBA is so concerned with propping up their aging superstars it's wild.

I think there needs to be a conversation about tightening the amount of playoff spots. Stars have very little incentive to play nightly unless they are in an awards race and this results in teams coasting through seasons with lackluster product on the court and still making playoff/play-in games. Regular season sports are more enjoyable and competitive when the games actually hold some weight towards their record(nfl,cbb,cfb). MLB, having the longest season in sports, balances this by only allowing division winners and a few wild card teams into the postseason. it’s getting to a point in the nba where teams are just going through the motions because they know they can put the bare minimum out and still make playoffs.

When I was a senior in high school, our girls' bb team went to state. They didn't have a shot clock in the rules, and that's exactly how our team lost. The opposing team got a lead, and the last 10 minutes or so of the game was just hot potato.

If the big three weren’t doing what they are doing at such late ages (Ie. Leading the league in categories still…) would it be easier to market new talent? I feel all three of them are generational talents and it will be hard until they are gone to get someone new to fill those roles…
@alwaysboogie348514 сағат бұрын
On top of that the impact those three have had on the game since day 1 of being in the league hasn’t be reproduced by this new talent at the same level since day 1. All of them have needed time to develop unlike those three.

Ratings don't matter. The NBA as a whole is making more money than ever. Just look at the salary cap (which is based on the income the NBA makes) and the salaries players are making now.

This is what Adam Silver has done for the NBA James Dator SB Nation 5-4-24 *NBA’s new TV deal is worth $76 BILLION, and the salary cap is exploding again *A report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that the agreed to deal with NBC, ESPN and Amazon will be 11 years, $76 BILLION - shattering even the high-end of expectations. *Sean Marks, general manager of the Brooklyn Nets told the New York Post that he expects that by 2032 these supermax contracts will be worth over $100M per year due to the new media rights deal *-The future is ludicrously bright for the NBA, and players are destined to become some of the highest-paid athletes in history because of it.

The pick and roll is partially so broken because we do not call moving screens basically at all. I would say that around 70% of all screens set in the NBA are illegal, sometimes you dont have to change the rules, actually applying the rules would already help.

Honestly, the game has been "figured out." Just like a video game, or any game really, to change the meta you have to introduce a new variable. Former game changing rules: Shot clock, adding/removing zone defense, handchecking, 3pt line, dribbling restrictions, tech fouls etc.
@SkiLILs13 сағат бұрын
Players gotta be on board with changing the meta. Unlike Apex, the game can't just change without their approval.

The NBA needs some new rivalries. Curry/LeBron, KD/Bron, and even Curry/KD are primetime-worthy matchups and usually deliver every time. I want to see some beef. Like I want to see Ja and Ant really go at it. But I also believe the mainstream media (not limited to networks like ESPN) also do a HORRIBLE job at basketball topics. Curry, Bron, and KD are already established legends. But when you have guys like Perk, SAS, and Malika do nothing but talk about LeBron and the Lakers all day, then this is what you have and that's why lots of people are starting to deviate to non-mainstream platforms for content. Honestly, we do need to give the BIG 3 their flowers while they are here because when they are gone, I'm concerned what the NBA will be if things don't change

I have to add something to the subscription point u made. As an european, watching football (soccer) in europe here is like 10 times harder than watching sports from the US. For watching championseleague and the own leagues in my country, ur probably pay around 100 euros a month and still deal with several problems. Thats why league pass is such a blessing in the sky, because its not even that expensive. Its worse in the US but trut me, the subscription shit really has no limts its straight war between companies. The face of the league point is completely valid tho.

To add to the video game correlation nba 2k had the exact same problem. All these sweats just run the same lineups and play the same way it’s entirely too boring but if you really want to compete you run the meta lineup. The NBA needs to allow the defense to play defense. The rules have forced soft defenses and spawned boring offenses.
@wnc20044 сағат бұрын
I think the solution to this is to move the three point line back therefore it’s not as efficient of a shot and let’s not forget this isn’t the first time the NBA has done this. I believe it needs to be done again because the common NBA player’s range is far further than what it was even 6 years ago
@katiemilkey932413 сағат бұрын
The ONLY reason Im not watching games is because they're spread out across so many streaming services, and no one can afford all that. When I was working at a bar with cable and nba network, I'd literally be watching 2 games at once for 6 hours a night, 5 nights a week. Unfortunately, I didn't make any money there and it was a total clusterf*ck so I left but I didn't realize it would be so much harder to watch games at home. It always seems like the games I have access to are the ones I have little to no interest in watching. I hate to say it but greed is honestly ruining sports.

Would it be ridiculous to make midrange worth 2.5 points?? I think the would significantly change the shot diet if a game, maybe try it out in g league games?
@roybradley8539 сағат бұрын
I would propose to limit three points attempts that would count for 3. For exemple every team can attempt 40 3’s per game. Past that limit, any three point made will only count as a 2 pointer

The reason the NBA is not marketing, any of the up-and-coming players is because they’re still focused on LeBron Curry and KD. Once they retire then the league can focus on marketing the younger players.

The reason why soccer has been around for so long and its popularity is unmatched is because there isn’t really a meta. It is such a rudimentary concept with fair rules that it doesn’t allow teams to easily exploit tactics…

Once again low with a fire video Mfers saying shooting 3s is ruining the game sound dumb and stupid. its down for several reasons and none of it is due to entertainment. Reason number 1 - the whole reguler season is useless becuase the season starts at the Playoffs, 2 - most teams are playing the exact same way, and its easy to predict the winner because the more talented team is always gonna win, 3- if the game is advertised to start at 3pm there is no reason for the game to start anytime between 3-4pm and 4 - americans love to promote athletism over actual talents hence why players like Cueley Stain and D Ayton ahead of Luka etc just to name a few. These issues are simple issues to solve, so I still have faith in the team

idk bout the 3pt shooting what gets me is officiating calling weak fouls or handing out T's because some looked at them mean, and the flopping to draw fouls like toughing up and play ball. Also the league not flexing games out when you know star players are out in advance like sixers opening night shit was so ass to watch
@straitbeats12 сағат бұрын
They can slow down the 3 if the defense wouldn’t overreact to it. They run them off the line rather than just defending and once they’re ran off the line they drive, force rotation and pass to another shooter and shoot a 3. One big 3 point shooting contest. That’s why I like watching Kyrie, Ingram and derozan
