The Nothing is a metaphor for depression; people have begun to lose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the Nothing grows stronger! its an emptiness, its a despair
@Sorakeyblademaster372 жыл бұрын
Close. Despair is the inevitable results, pr rather the symptoms. The Nothing represents the belief that existence has no meaning, no purpose. The belief that is devoid of the possibility of hope, salvation, freedom, and goodness. I don't mean people PRETENDING that existence has meaning; I mean that existence actually is meaningful on a _metaphysical_ level.

@Freedomofspeechisgod5 ай бұрын
Yes and no. I do believe the nothing represents a spirit of spiritual poverty and childlike imagination. A sense of innocence and purity. A feeling of loosing yourself. And that’s the point. It first happens in your mind. Because once you loose your head. U have now lost everything. Freedom is in your mind and heart first. If the nothing can break your imagine and your connection to source. You can no longer manifest you can no longer create. That is what it is ment for. Sabastion was so important and powerful because he created that whole world. With just his thoughts and imagination. That child like innocence and energy that is often broken as we become adults. But if you can manage to keep that innocence there is no telling what you are able to manifest. That is why it is so important to heal every thing inside. It starts from with in. It has very little to do with depression. We surcome to the things we often tell ourselves not so much what ppl do or put on us. Remember everything is energy. Only we can allow truly allow it to affect us negatively. Continue to create as the Gods and goddesses you truly are!

Watching this again at 43 years old made me realize that this story has a lot more to it than I remember. I just love the ideas behind it. I also love the fact that the "villian" in this story is only seen as creepy, sporadic storms that can devour an entire world without taking a true physical form.
@jackcoleman17843 ай бұрын
Technically the villain in terms of characters is Gmork. He's specifically a vampire wolf but he really is someone not from Fantasia but not necessarily from Earth either. The wolf is just the form he takes when he is in Fantasia.

In the book, it was said that looking into the nothing was like suddenly becoming blind. You literally could see nothing, unlike the movie depiction of a giant black storm cloud. Granted, the original depiction would have been hard to create on the big screen anyways.

Normally the nothing would be a void "basically a black hole with no elements or matter" In this case it is a fairy tale so the land of Fantasia was created by believers and young dreamers who were interested in The Never ending Story. For the ones that have seen the film in it's entirely, would know when Bastian runs into the book shop, the owner was a mean old man and ask him to leave because he doesn't like kids. This was put to the belief that the old man dislike children do to the fact because they lack the imagination and creativity they he had as a child and feels that kids today are only interested in Comics, Television, and Video Games. As a result very few people at Bastian's age know about The Never Ending story so her comes The Nothing, created by Cynicism and Apathy, Fantasia starts to deteriorate and slowly all characters and scenery disappear because they is no more dreams and imagination to keep it alive.

The Nothing is the nihilistic sense of existence that has swept over the modern Western world. Creative sterility is one of the major factors of this. The root for nihilism, “nihi,” even means nothing. By “nihilistic existence,” I essentially mean the negative aspects of modern life. In the book, there’s mention of “those who sit above in shadow,” who allegedly have some influence over the Nothing. This is probably meant to refer fun sucking control freaks who have way too much power and use it to ruin everyone’s lives because they think they’re making a better world. For example, the school that’s filled with bullies? The one Bastien goes to? Those who sit above in shadow would be the bureaucrats whose policies make it that much easier for bullies to torment the actual victims because they don’t understand children, schools, or they don’t understand bullies. It’s the _banality_ of evil that’s overrun everything and the nihilism that inevitably results from it.

@Vladislak In the book the nothing didn't suck people or things into it as it spread, those who came too close to it had the uncontrollable urge to throw themselves into it. Throngs of people would march off in a disturbing ritualistic manner to throw themselves into it. If it weren't for Gmork (the wolf) biting down on Atreyu after it's death, then Atreyu would have thrown himself into the nothing as well. This is so much better to use REAL masks instead of this CGI technic. I know creating artificial beings with the computer is much cheaper for the film companies, but it looks more unreal and it feels worse. Bavaria film studios were great as long as Wolfgang Petersen directed movies, watch Enemey Mine with Dennis Quaid. And the great mask they created for his alien friend. It looks so real and it was surely a hard work for the make-up artist and also for the actor. To sit still for hours is surely not very funny ;-)
