Porsche lied about the new 911 S/T. It's not really a car made for drivers and I'll tell you why.

I have a ST coming. I will drive it in the rain, in the winter, on the track and anytime I can just like my other cars in the past. I’ve never worried about putting on miles, my challenge is getting the time to get out driving. For everyone else who buys one, do what makes you happy with it.

I think we need a part 2. There’s a lot to consider in the Motorsports theater and driving dynamics of the lessened sound deadening, the single mass flywheel, the first 911 with double wishbone without rear wheel steer… there’s a lot that could make this the most unique driving experience to date, even more so than the R

"It's expensive!" No shit! What did you expect when a no-limit production Cayman GTS is $100K? If it's out of your budget, opt for the Cayman instead. Dismissing it as not a driver's car just because of the cost is the dumbest thing I ever heard! If you can't get an allocation, buy one on the secondary market. 1,963 units is not that low and there will be many for sale. Especially now, with prices dropping fast and markups shrinking across the world.

Great perspective! Agree. To add to it-it feels like Porsche themselves are feeding the rampant speculation and flipping of the 911R now, despite hearing they re-introduced a manual in part to avoid that, and ensure people are actually driving their “driver’s cars.” Perhaps there’s a rational reason like production line capacity for the current chassis, but you’d think they’d mention that if it was the reason.
@AtypicalDriver
@AtypicalDriver 9 ай бұрын
That's a good point, hadn't thought about a production capacity limitation -- though they did say the 1,963 units is because the 911 was original related in the year 1963 it feels a little arbitrary. Or they just think there isn't a big enough market for a $290k 911.

I could not agree more. Most STs are destined to be locked away in private collections, never to be seen until they owner gets bored or the value rises enough to trade for a bigger fish. My 2024 Carrera S has about 1400 miles after only two months. Thats likely more miles than most STs will have in five years. I have been on a "list" to get a GT3 (wing) for three years. That car will be on the track as often as I can manage. Dying with a few perfect, unused cars in my garage when I die is the furthest from my goal as humanly possible.

Unfortunately, anything with a "limited edition" designation will be under lock and key, only to breathe fresh air for a Pebble Beach Concours or an RM Sotheby's auction. I think it could be self-perpetuating in that many manufacturers do it knowing it will lead to quick sales and a [somewhat] return on investment with most revenue coming from loss leaders to make up the difference, whereas the prospective owners are looking for a long/short-term flip and are the least concerned with the vehicle's performance but only its exclusivity which = appreciation - the fewer miles the better. One hand feeds the other. Meanwhile, those who would truly appreciate the vehicles are barred by the outrageous pricing.

Even If I could get one afford it (I can‘t), it is too much. I drove a manual GT3 Touring (992). It is an amazing and very special car with a magnificent na engine, but it is quite hard to unlock and experience the potential on a public road. Now I have a 911T on order. I think it is fast (and expensive) enough. And even this one was difficult to get . Many dealers stated that the production is already sold put. Maybe there will be 992.2 T, but we don‘t know yet an if yes, it probably has a hybrid system on board. So maybe this is one of the last pure real drivers car.

If you get the new blue it is automatically a Heritage package with both the lettering and roundel but you can opt the roundel off. If you don't want the Heritage package you can't get the lettering nor can you get the cool colored wheels. IKR? Kinda odd and it makes me wonder wtf is really going on.

Carrera GT is supposedly a wonderful drivers car, but because of the value very few get driven much anymore. A local guy has one here and uses it a fair bit. even for costco and home depot trips (actually his 992 GT3 does home depot since it matched their logo, see here - instagram.com/p/Cw1Ro7QrtEE/?img_index=2). Like I said about the S/T, the SPECS indicate it's going to be a great drivers car and I'd love to see more people racking up miles on them. This carrera GT with 66,000 miles gives me some hope - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKWtnqdrpptqqM0&pp=ygUSY2FycmVyYSBHVCBzYWx2YWdl There is also a McLaren F1 running around with 40k miles or so on it, which I think is wonderful.

There are a hundred kinds of Porsche buyers but I'll guess at three. One buys the cheaper car that he can easily afford. It is maybe a low three or high four but the new buyer got it for a decent price and doesn't mind daily driving it, even if that means some wear and maybe some stone chips. Money isn't an issue, he didn't pay much. The next kind of buyer is buying a Porsche, a cars he has wanted since he was a kid. He spends a lot of money but he feels it is worth it and is proud to be seen it it. He drives it on weekends when the weather is good. Don't want any rust ya know. He drives it but just doesn't want to make it look bad from overuse. The last person spends a lot more than he can afford. He won't miss any meals but it's a big payment monthly for him. He drives it sometimes on weekends and is sure to then detail it and get the cover back on it. He knows he probably spent too much but he is pretty sure he will make some money one day when he sells it. None of these guys are wrong as you so arrogantly want to pose. They each have their reason for what they spent and how much they feel comfortable driving it. But give them all a break. They are part of the club we all belong to.

I am a different kind of Porsche 911 buyer. I buy them new because I want to pick the color and every option to tailor it to my needs and wants. Then I drive them as often as I can, even in Chicago winters with my second set of wheels. I get them film covered so I spend less time washing and more time driving. I go on PCA club tours and also track ocassionally. I could afford a Ferrari, McLaren or Lambo but find them unreliable and the owners insufferable. Porsche is more than a car brand, its a family with lots of members and activities year round. I know there are many more of my kind than all three of your guesses. The problem is the 7speed Porsche manu sucks in comparison to 6 speed manu which is simply outstanding mechanical feast. Would never choose 7spd manual over PDK in Porsche. Will drive the car on thursday. So we will see. RS was too hardcore for me for street use. GT3 seems to be perfect choice. As of T version I love the idea but they have missed it a bit. It should be the simplest 911 with RWD and manual transmistion with no options to choose from.

That is a minority opinion about the manual. Most reviewers have called the 992's 7 speed manual one of Porsche's best ever and a significant improvement over the 991's. Yes the 6 speed in the GT3 is better but not by much. I have driven and owned both including the PDK. Getting a PDK misses the point of a 911. You lose so much involvement that you may as well get a Benz. Porsche offers the T with options because they know their buyers have different needs and wants. You can order one as you like but other buyers want to customize theirs.

Porsche is following a very deliberate strategy that they believe will enhance their brand…people go crazy for what they can’t have - the assumption is that if anyone could get one, it would not be desirable. Ferrari knows this, Rolex knows this, Porsche is simply doing what other “luxury” brands need to do to climb the desirability ladder. I think calling the S/T a “pure enthusiast driver’s car” while following this strategy is what’s causing so much cynicism. Because enthusiasts would not care if their neighbor also owned one. The Sport Classic is a much better model for this, or arguably super sports cars like the the 918 and Carrera GT.

It feels like they are going the Ferrari route as you mentioned. But honestly, that is one of the things I don't like about Ferrari, the BS around buying crummy cars in order to get allocations on others. The thing is, Porsche sold 42,000+ 911's in 2022, that's not counting other sports cars like the Boxster and Cayman. But Ferrari only sold 13,000 cars total across the whole range. So, I think Porsche striking a great balance of both luxury and volume overall. I guess my main issue is with their marketing department....the 911 S/T is going to be a great car no doubt, I just hope some true enthusiasts will get one.

Nice clickbait title. I really don't think that a car review WITHOUT driving the car is a waste of time. The price is expensive only compared to other Porsche cars. It is NOT expensive compared to the cheapest Ferrari. I would argue that Ferrari dropping the manual gearbox means Porsche are in a very unique space. As for the rarity, the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 was rare with only 600 units made but the 911 S/T isn't anywhere near as rare.

Sir, A "drivers car" needs to be low profile and not attract attention, a manual and naturally aspirated. Less is more, so it must be lightweight and devoid of drivers aids. On all counts the 991 R and 992 S/T qualify. Of course on narrow country roads a PDK Cayman would be quicker point to point. But driver enjoyment comes from mastering the car which demands skill and ability and that's what a manual naturally aspirated car offers. No allocations have been made yet, but when deliveries commence summer 2024, I hope to be one of the lucky few to then be able to say "This is the best 911 and most rewarding I've driven." That is after 48yrs of continuous race and road 911 ownership over 27 X 911's.

It is most definitely a drivers car.. What owners choose to do with their cars is their business. No offence.. You sound like so many other disenfranchised KZbinrs who are just salty because they don't think they'll ever be offered a build slot. I've been fortunate enough to have had a fair few sports / supercars and I DO drive them.. My inbound GT3 Touring will get used properly. I put 4500 miles on my last 718 Spyder in just 6 months, 5000 miles on my recently sold Huracan EVO RWD in just over a year.. 3500 miles on my F12, etc.etc. . These are considerably high mileages given I have access to other cars. I also live in the UK which has crap weather in comparison to the US, meaning that opportunities to use them properly is more limited. I even use them in winter every 2 to 3 weeks to keep all the oils circulating in the engine, gearbox etc. . Anyway.. The cold hard truth is... If YOU were on the list to get an ST... You would NOT have made this video, and you wouldn't have cared either.. I've owned 991.2 C2S (13000 miles in 30 months).. It doesn't even begin to compare to a GT3, hell.. even a 718 Spyder doesn't get close to a GT3. You need to have a word with yourself. Sorry

I mean honestly if Porsche asked during the allocation process how you plan to use the car, and sold more of them to people like yourself I think that would be a good thing. But they sell them to a lot of loyal customers (often collectors) which I think is kind of silly and smells a little too much like Ferrari-itis. Porsche needs more customers like you who are out there driving the cars and giving the cars visibility. I heard recently that Gordon Murray is planning a "driving rewards program" to encourage people to drive his T50 and T33 hyper cars. (I think he announced it during Monterey Car Week?) Anyway, I think that's pretty cool he's encouraging those to be driven as well.

I think the 991.1GTS would be the car I'd get if I were forced to get rid of mine or if it were wrecked/stolen/etc. But I'd de-badge it like my S is also.
