The DCEU was always a mess, timeline-wise, so the sprinkles are always going to just be there without being able to use them as firm timeline moments until there are more set and firm dates in the DCU.

1) THE SUICIDE SQUAD is canon; however, we don’t know HOW much. Margot Robbie is probably NOT going to be Harley Quinn. 2) PEACEMAKER is 99.9% canon, with the exception of the JUSTICE LEAGUE showing up at the end. 3) FLASH shows that there is a MULTIVERSE. #SnydrVerse Knightmare universes exists alongside #DCEU and #ArrowVerse and #WATCHMEN. 4) BLUE BEETLE is PROBABLY 100% canon. According to Gunn, the actor will STILL play Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle 😀

I always think when they mention those events in Creature Commandos, I think of it like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker S1 but the "DCU special edition" versions, pretty much like the Star Wars special editions when they tried to add details to correlate with the prequels. Hopefully, for these two DC stories, the same thing happens.

Gunn also said that Blue Beetle is canon to the DCU as well. Which works since there's nothing contradictory to worry about. Blue Beetle movie doesn't reference specific events from previous movies except for the fact that a Batman and Superman exist so it could totally be brought in with no issue

Right! So on Blue Beetle his answer was abit confusing. He said that Blue Beetle is the first character in the DCU and Superman is the first movie in the DCU. So it seems he was saying that the movie isn't canon, but the character is. But I honestly think he should just make the movie canon, as it was great and fits really well in canon.

Basically what Gunn is trying to say is that whatever is mentioned, regardless of whether it may have occurred in other DC products as well, is only canon because it is mentioned in the DCU, not because those products are canon. In this case, we know that Project Starfish occurred, that the Corto Maltes incident occurred, that Rick Flag died, presumably at the hands of Peacemaker, but we do not know, for example, if the members of the Suicide Squad were the same (because I honestly don't think Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn), or if the fight between the two of them was the same.

I think they will be limited to things from the DCEU, because that is what was seen in movie theaters and therefore reached more people. I think the most that can be expected is that Superman has saves like Christopher Reeve's in his films, as a tribute, like the helicopter for example, because it is the usual resource and has been referenced in a large number of series and films.

I think the best description for the DCU is that it's parallel to the DCEU, but with obvious differences. Similar in many aspects, but unique in their own ways. I've been making a connection map of all the DC movies/shows, this would not be the first time in my eyes we've had parallel worlds. Superman & Lois is a prime example of it being parallel to the arrowverse but still being a separate universe. Another example of this would be the 60s filmation cartoons and superfriends, albeit that one is kinda a stretch lol.

Yeah, that's how I view at it as well. It's not a soft reboot, as it's a totally different universe...but it does have alot of parallels to the DCEU at the same time. Excellent way of looking at it!

Yeah, that phone sure makes things interesting. I do like it being in 2020 for the DCEU, as I don't think 2021 works since we know Shazam 2 is in 2022 and that doesn't leave enough space for TSS to fit in the timeline. But for the new DCU, I think Gunn can place it where he wants and so I bet he does go with his original 2021 placement.

I chose not to watch Creature Commandos because of the TV MA rating, but I am going to be there opening day to see Superman in Theaters on July 11, 2025. I think we need to honor the DC Extended Universe timeline placements of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1, also the quotes make the most sense of where to start, Amanda Waller says this about Weasel, "It's one of the few soldiers still alive from Project Starfish in Corto Maltese" also Amanda Waller said this to Rick Flag, Sr. when she was talking about Rick Flag, Jr., "When he died in Corto Maltese he died a hero" even when Rick Flag, Sr. was telling Ilana Rostovic what happened to his son Rick Flag, Jr., he said, "He passed on about two years back" also Rick Flag, Sr. said this about Amanda Waller and what happened between her and her daughter, Leota Adebayo, "I thought Congress put a stop to all Task Force X activities." So because all of those hints, this is the Timeline, here we go! DCU 2020: The Suicide Squad 2021: Peacemaker Season 1 2022: Creature Commandos Season 1

I like considering the DCU a hard reboot. Just because some light elements from 1 or 2 of the movies/shows in the old dceu are carried over doesn't mean it's a soft reboot. It's like considering the Nolan Batman movies a soft reboot of the Burton films just because Bruce's parents died in both universes. It's best to just forget everything about the DCEU and go straight into the universe, building context just from the dialogue. On the new timeline: It might simply be the case that in this universe, Peacemaker happened more than 5 months after Project Starfish, since Steve Agee said he didn't realize CC is happening "so soon" after Peacemaker. To me, 1.5 years after peacemaker isn't "so soon" but that's pretty semantical

And you also raise a good point that perhaps Peacemaker's line will be retconned to place Creature Commandos alot closer than a year and a half after Peacemaker. But then it means Peacemaker was the hospital for a longer time and that's kinda weird too, ig?

In theory, with the literal loose canon we have, I see two ways to interpret the timeline: 1) A DCU fan can consider The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker Season 1 and Creature Commandos the first canon entries in the new universe. 2) As long as there are no contradictions, a DCEU fan could consider this a DCEU entry right between Peacemaker and Shazam 2. Gunn himself invites multiple interpretations of canon, which is a nice attitude. I just hope that attitude doesn't lead to a messy continuity like that of the Fox X-Men. Fingers crossed.

I know this is less and less likely to happen but I still would very much like to see the differences between universes explored on peacemaker season 2 as a plot point The teases for me really had hinted to that but maybe not The idea of having peacemaker be a psychopirate kind of figure making him remember the old universe but being suddenly stuck on this one is golden. And that’s the only series I could imagine they doing it and playing with it, like idk, making it so vigilante is completely different on the new universe and peacemaker just having to deal with it lol. Ok, so a random thought crossed my mind. (nothing to do with this video) Can Iron Man 3 be seen as a movie set during the blip? I know it isn't, but if that was headcanon; would it sorta work or how much would we need to overlook for it to work? Or could a fan edit be possible? I think almost everyone in the movie are alive during the blip. Pepper, Happy, Rhodey, Bruce Banner. And maybe the PTSD and flashbacks are referring to the events of Infinity War. Hope you could explore this and perhaps make a video on it if there is something to it.

Great video! I personally hope that eventually Gunn goes back and makes a re-edit or something of both The Suicide Squad and of Peacemaker and have them labeled “The DCU Cut” or DCU Verison or something. Because I know what he’s saying in the interviews, but I just think doing that at some point down the line would really help just have a definitive start to the DCU universe and for people to for sure know what happened. It would also be way better for new fans later that haven’t seen the DCU nor the DCEU, but want to watch the DCU in order, but yet might get confused watching creature commandos and peacemaker season 2, but also they shouldn’t have to watch every entree in the DCEU (because TSS and PM do reference many things in it) just to start a completely different universe. I also hope they say if Blue Beetle is following the same canon rules that he said, or if it’s straight up 100% canon, because I feel like it should be since it barely references anything else and the stuff it does could be in any DC universe, so he could say it’s always been in the DCU. So yeah it’s interesting, if he does what I said here, then Superman will be the 5th entry in the DCU.

This show is so good. Love it love it love it. It's interesting how the show is technically both DCEU and DCU because of the fact it's a follow-up to TSS. I understand TSS and Peacemaker are loosely DCU per se but still fun. I did not see the glimpse into the future though ... but Starfire in her comic accurate costume! As far as the reboot ... it's kind of in the middle. It's definitely a hard reboot in the sense of being a whole new universe but it's also a soft reboot by using elements from the DCEU.

Interesting theory! Yeah, using some of the same characters / actors does make it trickier. But I've always considered something a soft reboot if there is a direct connection between the two physical universes...like some event that ties them together. But it seems Gunn is starting over with a new universe and is just pulling in a few "sprinkles" in as well. Anyway, really appreciate you sharing your perspective on it. Thanks so much!

I have everything to say of CC (Creature Commandos) so far, as episodes 1 and 2. 1. The fighting choreography/animation is also one of the first things that really impressed me and the G.I. Robot is just a chill guy. He just wants someone to ki*l Nazis with, you know, like any chill guy. 2. Peacemaker and the suicide squad are canon, too (most of it). they are the true beginning or prologues of dcu. 3. Based solely on the face that the suicide squad is technically the iron man of the DCU, meaning starro was the first main antagonist of the entire thing. Just like starro was the first villain the Justice League fought. 4. The princess has to be clayface right (judging from his appearance in the trailers and the princess’s weird behavior so far), and I can totally see that happening, which means rick did it with clayface. 5. What about the queen? She looked like she was trying to say something to Rick, and I don't think she's the queen. I think she's the real princess. 6. I'm really happy with it so far. Definitely feels like an appetiser of what's to come from the wider world while introducing a new cast of characters that I very quickly begun to like. I don't know if anyone else feels the same but in The Suicide Squad I do loved the dynamic of the fodder team that got ki*led off and was gutted that we didn't get more of them together, and the CC team remind me so much of what they had. I'm really excited about where these characters end up in the show, both individually and together. 7. The Dr. The phosphorus fight was awesome for a small-scale intimate brawl. Also, it was good to see someone fighting a flame user actually have to worry about getting burned for once. In animation, the fire never seems to be actually hot. It functions more like energy blasts. 8. I'm stoked to see where it goes from here! The tone is really cool. Very much, James Gunn, I hope they bring this combo of grit and humor to the live action films as well. It’s like if Guardians had a little more edge, which is exactly what DC should be doing coming off of a very self serious Snyderverse.

Great question! So Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first DCU character but Superman is the first DCU movie. So I agree, that makes the movie soft canon and thus if events in it are referenced in a future DCU entry, then that will make those events canon. Basically, Gunn is giving himself some wiggle room to decide what parts of the movie to consider canon.

Honestly, I don’t think we HAVE to trust Gunn. If he’s wrong, this wouldn’t be the first time he said something where he’s wrong or able to be contradicted by outside evidence. I always think a creative work should rule when there are conflicts unless the creator acknowledges those conflicts, tells us the work is mistaken, and the creator’s statement is an intentional retcon/correction… Unless one of two exceptions exists. The first being new projects that come out and retcon the old project, and the second being something like what we have here where the evidence is pretty dubious. Since the 2020 date is difficult to see and not clearly part of the story, it’s okay to disregard it in favor of what Gunn says.

August, 2021 just doesn't work when trying to fit TSS into the overall timeline. Frankenstein fing the Bride creeped me out. He cheated on his wife with what is essentially pieces of dead women that he brought to life who was technically also recently born. Not to mention stabbing his first creation in the back. I'm not saying it's bad, I like the story, but damn is it weird when you think about it.

1) THE SUICIDE SQUAD is canon; however, we don’t know HOW much. Margot Robbie is probably NOT going to be Harley Quinn. 2) PEACEMAKER is 99.9% canon, with the exception of the JUSTICE LEAGUE showing up at the end. 3) FLASH shows that there is a MULTIVERSE. #SnyderVerse Knightmare universe exists alongside #DCEU and #ArrowVerse and #WATCHMEN. James Gunn’s #DCU exists in the multiverse. The #DCU is NEITHER a soft, NOR a hard reboot. It’s ANOTHER universe, like in DC’s PRE-CRISIS continuity. 4) BLUE BEETLE is PROBABLY 100% canon. According to Gunn, the actor will STILL play Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle 😀

Yeah, i definitely prefer August 2020 for the DCEU timeline, as 2021 just doesn't work in the original universe. And so I lean towards an August, 2020 for the new DCU as well. Hopefully we'll get more timeline clues in future episodes. Love trying to map things out as we go along!

I would certainly call the reboot gelatinous. It's hard except when it's not, and Gunn can change what's canon and not at will. I saw some other comments about this, but I figured I'd still point out that Gunn stated that Blue Beetle (at least the character, if not the movie) were also DCU canon. I personally don't see why the movie wouldn't be, since it has almost no DCEU references, but again, I think Gunn is just keeping options gelatinous.

I haven’t seen it yet but it looks interesting and I’ll check it out. I’m still pretty frustrated with Gunn playing fast and loose with canon because that really hurts the overall stories imo. How can we care about someone like peacemaker when we don’t know what’s happened to him? And when people ask him stuff like what’s happened he just kinda goes “eh whatever I feel like” which just isn’t cool imo. He’s a great storyteller but canon is a big weak point for him atm and it’s showing. As for hard reboot vs soft reboot I think this is pretty simple imo. Soft reboot is a reboot that takes anything from before and hard reboot is absolutely nothing from before. It’s not really a scale imo, there’s no “almost everything is different”. Either everything is different or it’s not. And in this case it’s not. So it’s a soft reboot. Do or do not there is no try so to speak.

I agree...I don't like how Gunn is approaching canon. I hope it doesn't make a mess of things down the road. The biggest reason I feel it's a hard reboot is that there isn't an event that changed the DCEU over to the DCU. It honestly feels like an entirely new universe that just has a few events similar to the other universe. Sorta like 838 and 616 have some similarities but aren't connected.

Man I don't envy being in James Gunn's position because the DCEU was such a damn mess that just making his own two projects The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker canon to his DCU that people are still confused because Emilia Harcourt appeared in Black Adam and Shazam 2 and John Economos appeared in Shazam 2 because WB was even throwing his characters in these other projects in the DCEU with no plan and because of this brain dead decision by WB to do this it's causing minor confusion with James Gunn's DCU and James Gunn is trying his best to explain this stuff like if I was James Gunn I would be a little annoyed with WB 😂😂

Yep, totally agree. Gunn was pulled into the DCEU at the point when it was carnage and yet he still produced two fantastic entries (TSS and Peacemaker) so I really feel for him. He's trying his best to start a new universe and has to deal with how to remove his entries from the DCEU so they can live on in the DCU. Not an easy task at all!

I'm sorry but it's always going to be MCU --> DC(E)U "The Suicide Squad" is probably the only DC(E)U film that I've truly enjoyed from start to finish and thought that it wouldn't look out of place in the MCU. Now I'm not a DC hater by any stretch. Batman & Batman Returns are brilliant. Batman Forever is fun. The Dark Knight trilogy is epic, especially the middle installment and Joker is a work of art. (& technically Ben 10 would fall under the DC banner if his film hadn't been shelved!)

Also, I get where you are coming from with the technically, but just because it's made by the same company or produced under that comic company doesn't mean that character is a part of that franchise. Marvel made Transformers and Power Rangers comic, but they don't know those characters. They were just the platform they were released under.

@@jeremymorris345 Fun fact: Doctor Who's "Whoniverse" has a Marvel Multiverse designation, despite it being owned by the BBC and not Marvel/Disney. The reason being that Marvel did in fact once have the rights to a Doctor Who comic. So it's not a stretch to think of the Ben 10 "Omniverse" having a DC Multiverse designation one day. (Apparently Ben 10 did feature alongside other CN properties in a DC comic series around 2013 time too!) As for the Ben 10 TV movies, they were produced in house by CN, the recently cancelled theatrical Ben 10 movie was going to be made by Warner Bros. I'm not sure whether it's a blessing or not that it's not going ahead anymore tbh)

They said in The Flash that when Barry messes with time some events can cross over and also occur in other timelines, allowing James Gunn to pick and choose what he wants to carry over from the DCEU with it still making sense. Also I think the joke with GI Robot is he was misidentifying people as Nazis until the 50s, and probably killing them for it.

I have an incredibly crazy crackpot theory as to how this all makes sense. Bear with me here: Remember Barry's time-travel/multiversal shenanigans in his film? Well, we clearly saw that when he attempted to change the past, it effectively ripped open holes into other universes. It sent Ben Affleck's Batman into another world, and replacing him with Michael Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton universe, hence why he was there. So what if when Barry "fixed" everything, it actually sent characters like Peacemaker, Blue Beetle and their supporting cast into another universe, where instead of Henry Cavill, David Corenswet is Superman. This could also explain what James Gunn meant in that the Flash film would "reset the DCU." So that way, the characters themselves and the arcs they went through stay intact for the new DCU, but events around them change because of Flash. Season 1 of "Peacemaker" is pre-Flashpoint (thus explaining the Justice League's cameo) and Season 2 is post-Flashpoint. And if James wanted to, he could bring it all together into a Crisis on Infinite Earths film a decade from now and perhaps finally give the DCEU/Snyderverse a proper farewell. Let me know what y'all think. It sounds far-fetched I know, but it's the only possible way I can wrap my head around it lol.

Oh wow...now that's a very cool theory. I discounted the ending of the Flash, since it clearly wasn't the new DCU...but I hadn't considered that we weren't seeing the new DCU at the end,of the film, but that what Flash did ended up creating the DCU. Niiiiice!

I think the DCU is a hard reboot. Most of the events taking place in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were disconnected from the DCEu in the first place so it already feels like a new universe now.

I genuinely don't understand why people care about what someone else says is canon. If I'm watching a series of movies or shows my head canon is the only thing that informs my experience. Why should I care about what is canon to someone else?

Good question! So at the end of the day, each fan's personal experience is what matters the most, so I agree that your own head canon is ultimately what will define your enjoyment level. The reason the canon question becomes important , at least to some extent, is that the creative team for the DCU will be operating from a "Bible" that Gunn has created. Thus, the question of what is and isn't canon in that "Bible" will dictate how the DCU proceeds from here. So in that regard, I like to try to understand what Gunn considers canon since it will greatly influence the overall direction of the DCU.

@AbitofEverything4U oh sure that makes sense for what your doing. And as an artist I'm prone to think that everyone is entitled to their own experience with art and how they choose to engage with it. That's why I get confused when people are upset that a corporation has said "this is canon but these other things are not canon " like Disney did with the old Star Wars stories. I just don't understand why anyone should care if Disney says the old stories are no longer canon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it though, I appreciate it.

i am not entirely convinced the suicide squad and peacemaker were EVER canon to the dceu. they share actors and characters, sure, but they do necessarily act in line with the dceu side at all. in peacemaker, task force x was dissolved and everyone was on waller's sh*tlist, but in black adam they have a black site more advanced than ever and harcourt is now seemingly promoted? And the idea of Superman and the JSA working directly with Waller kinda works with the DCEU Waller but absolutely NOT with Gunn's Waller. She is far too evil in TSS to be considered by any hero.
