I’m a 70+ Grandmother who scratched an itch and impulsively bought a lovely Epiphone Les Paul 50S which is a very nice instrument. I subsequently wanted to try a Fender and I have absolutely fallen in love with a beautiful Player Plus Stratocaster in Opal Blue finish. I have a smallish hand and the neck feels amazing and is so much easier for me to play than the LP. I’m relearning to play after a long gap and have a long way to go… but it’s so much fun. I love your videos Mary, your voice and your playing style.

Mary Spender! I've watched a few of your videos, always nice. I have some serious Stratocaster advice. I'm 6'. Jimi Hendrix was 6'1". If you're going to play a Stratocaster it's too big for you, unless you're that tall. Sooner or later you'll want to stretch four frets for a chord or something. The problem with getting smaller Strats, thinking offshore, is the fact Fender doesn't grant a complete license to produce accurate copies of their American products, so they don't tune or sound the same. I'd say the same for post 1964 product. When I was with George Benson in his dressing room, 1971, trading his 1955 Gibson L5 back and forth, talking about building my own left-handed Strat-style, he said the best place to install a pickup on a guitar is in the middle of the neck, where the strings vibrate the widest and have the most play-ability for fingers. You can't do that, so putting one at the end of the neck is best. That's what I like the least about your guitar. It has a humbucker by the bridge, supposed to be your lead pickup, when that began after Van Halen began to be pushed as the next Hendrix. If you're looking for tones from a Strat, you want the single coil pickups by the bridge and middle on all the time, with the single coil by the neck as a single pickup for leads, using effects with extra battery voltage. If you read this far here's an A minor chord you might not know. Bass E string, fifth fret, A. A string, third fret, B. D string, second fret, E. G, B and E strings, open. As as soft wash of a chord you can use it for background with acoustics or electrics, and it does move up five and seven frets for progressions, with minors in between. You can use feedback with an effect that makes the three drone strings make a sound, while you play lead high up on the bass strings where they sound like lead guitar. Playing lead on the bass strings gives your fingers a rest from pushing and bending thin ones. I better stop typing. And please, don't stay quiet. It doesn't work for me.

I have been such a fan of guys like John Hartford, (At the Golden Bear, a little dive bar on Pacific Coast Highway in So. Cal.) and many others who to me are the Icons of the "singer-songwriter." Took his workshops, saw him play in churches and theaters. Point... the friend I duo with on gigs always says, "My favorite way to capture the beauty of performance is with the singer-songwriter, stripped of production gloss and unaccompanied. Just guitar and voice!" Perfect Mary. sometime I'll post a link to my KZbin channel and you can see a old man learn theory, share his journey to the world because of the courage you have given all of us over the years. Sam
