This reminds me of when selena gomez had a TERRIBLE performance, and all her fans kept defending her with the same excuse, "Do you know how hard it is to perform in front of thousands of people?!" I was like...what? That's literally a part of the job description of being a singer.🤦🏾‍♀️ Why defend mediocrity, or even worse, a lack of talent?

How many of us are actually supporting the likes of Ari Lennox, Fantasia, Mickey Guyton, Melanie Fiona, Amerie, Bree Runway, Tiana Major9, VanJess, Teyana Taylor or even Brandy or Janelle Monae?!!! Some of these black female artists are either underrated or no longer making music because we don’t/didn’t support their GREAT music/voices and complain about what is currently out there now smh (none of these queens make music for TikTok by the way). I think it's the triumph of aesthetics over talent. Now that we're online EVERY hour of every day we respond so much more to the looks and style of an artist than we do to their actual music and talent. This means super mediocre people can blow up because of the algorithm and just based on their looks and vibe.

I totally agree with you but this has been going on since 2008, or a little after Michael Jackson death. Madonna was the first to infiltrate the idea that even a non talented punk can make it through the power of scandal and shock values. Because of her, the mediocrity became more and more rampant. She has a few good cds but is a mess, can't sing or do anything special besides acting trash to be at the center of everything. Our legends back in the day focused on hard work like Jackson, Janet, Prince, Whitney but then you had Madonna... and later on the arrival of the Internet and reality TV.... you clearly no lonnger had to be talented to make it at ALL

I truly feel like Black performers were so undeniably better than white ones that the bar just got lowered to their level + streaming made people value entertainment more than talent. If you don’t appeal to white dollars you can sound like Patti but still won’t make it. It’s ruined originality, fresh new music, and the willingness to venture out of your money making box. White dollars don’t like Black art they can’t pick apart and steal, so it has to be within their reach.

@@shippendales8543 she’s still young and finding and making her own lane. I think she hasn’t clicked into her niche yet and is playing with sounds and personas, while writing about what she’s experiencing along the way. Where I think she falls short is balance between her dynamics of her vocals and the poppy-ness of the tracks, plus the internet still sees her as a duo and she’s trying really hard to be her own individual woman, sometimes to her detriment. All this can be chalked up to being a young, up and coming Black woman in music guided by the greatest artist of this generation. Yes, I totally agree. I think it also has to do with the profitability of the commodification of music in general and artists in particular. They can take a beautiful person and dress them up, auto-tune every note, and create tons of disposable music for profit and control every aspect of it. You cannot create another Gladys Knight. Legendary talent, artistry and skill cannot be mass produced. That's probably the new girls look and sound the same and a lot of the new music is sub par.

My thing is: there is TOO much talent in the world for people to be hyping up the average singers and dancers. If you can’t sing, at least be able to dance and have stage presence. If you can’t dance then you better know how to captivate an audience when you’re on stage singing. Stop giving these girls AND BOYS passes for being barely average. Please raise the bar. And one more thing: PLEASE learn how to do runs and riffs. There is no reason why you should barely be able to sing your own songs live, especially in these bridge-less 3 minute songs. You only have 2 minutes and some change of song nowadays so please show off your voice.

We can barely get a two step nowadays unless it’s a TikTok dance lol). This is why the K-pop girls have the views right now because even if the vocals are lacking, they are dancing. Black Music Archive talks about this. He explored how politics and presidents rid performance art programs from schools within urban communities. Because of this, the practice of singing has become a rarity for younger generations especially within urban Black communities. Where as music legends like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan had extensive practice to hone their craft in dining wither through the Black church of an after school talent program, today's artist don't have that. Which is why you see many campaigns like save the music. Additionally the white ran music industry is not investing in Black talent. They stole and white washed Rock and Country music and every genre of music from African Americans and the reacst elites that run the music industry force Black performers especially rappers to be mediocre to to create horrible music that degrades the Black community. Additionally the music industry force Black artists to be relegated to the urban categories of music to perpetuate negative stereotypes surrounding Blackness while stealing Rock and Country music and every genre of music to uplift whiteness while urban music is used to disrespect Black Americans.

Thank you! I saw a tweet saying that the lack of free music education in schools has a direct impact on the music industry and it’s like how is that not obvious?!? Also the Black church is losing grounds as a cultural Institution so it’s not as connected to the music industry as it once was in the past. With these considerations, how are the new girls going to truly develop? Like you can really only get training now if you can afford it, so it’s really only available to people who can afford to get it in their youth, thus driving class divisions of who gets access to music education.

I gotta check that video out cause it's interesting. I also think that the sheer volume of music and vocals and genres that we listen too have gone up. We have much greater access to a larger body of music than we had during Beyoncé, Rhiannas, and other 2000s debuting artists. Before, you only listened to what was on the radio, your CD, etc. This also made being an IT artist or star even easier. There was far less sound competition. Then The iPad and lime wire era happened. And here we are with Spotify. The dispersal of sound has gone up and there's just way too much to explore. There's an overload of content right at your fingertips. Sometimes an artist I like will create a new song and I won't listen to it till weeks or months later because there's just so much content my mind needs to catch up with. (And other reasons too). Listening to music used to be an activity. Now, in many ways, it's just background stuff and everybody does it. There are also 2 age old problems still present. 1) relevancy garnering $$$ over talent. And 2) there are still amazing artists today. Kelela doesn't make a bad song, The Internet/ syd/Steve Lacy have been killing it, Dram, Thundercats, Kota, too many for me to name but there are a ton of people who have been at their work for decades or who started a little while ago and just had that it factor, but just like how you needed to find your favorites in niche spaces, you also need to look off the mainstream. Mainstream artist have the most general appeal. General appeal is hard to find. Something that'll draw in people from all around is tough, but you also lose a bit of something with general appeal. Not much, just something. I think that people who don't like today's music are listening to too many generally appealing artists. Because great music is always being made. But ultimately, yes. Many of today's supposed to be generally appealing artists are well... not to the standards of the artist that came out in the early 2000s. Something got lost with the kids growing up in the early 2000s. I think 9/11, Katrina, the 2008 crash, and Twitter did some back to back damage that kinda made us fall below the cracks. They called mellinials the "I" generation but nah, the people that raised mellinials were the original self obsessed druggies lol there was some collapse of community and communal spaces that happened and it's really hard to sharpen performance talent in isolation.( It's hard to sharpen most forms of talent in isolation tbh.) Folks tried free parenting around the same time that neighborhoods, churches, and centers got quiet. The weaker the community, the stronger something else has to be. Producers/beat makers are carrying the music industry on their shoulders (as they always have). But this is an interesting topic.
@broderick7932

we do realize…. the young artists of today have exponentially less resources, especially with regard to performance practice in early life, to prepare for the careers they get in their 20s- though they have exponentially more resources with regard to music production, basic music theory education, and exposure/marketing- right? we do have a fundamental understanding of how technology affects artmaking right? mediocre is mediocre, no argument there, but there are structural and cultural reasons for these things. Black Music Archive has a great video on this called “Why the girls can’t sing” and even that video missed some points about how the environments in which you train [or don’t train] and under what circumstances make a significant difference in creative and vocal output. But in it, it is mentioned that the great Vocalists/Artists you mention in this video, they sang at home/church/school/with friends starting from age 3, incessantly and with proper guidance. and it was culturally as well as structurally expected and supported that they do so. the values were different. The Black Church, especially the traditional Black Church of the past, was specifically a Black Classical Music Training Program. Because Tradition Gospel is Black Classical Music. The standards were different, the allowance for music to be a primary aspect of a youth’s life were different. Music Programs existed in schools. Vocalists weren’t mic’d in studios, the ROOMS were. So you had basically classically trained vocalists singing on dynamic mics and condenser mics of the past which were often less sensitive, singing to the room, recording what were essentially live performances as they would happen on stage. it was a very different time that created far more capable singers. You want to train as a vocalist today? Spend $$$,$$$ in undergrad or get LUCKY and find a private lessons teacher for $$$ an hour. There’s little room in the lives of the youth for noisemaking, let alone music practice. No presence in the Black Church for a myriad of reasons. No music education programs k-12 except for on occasion. And it’s never been easier to make a Record on condenser/electret mics at a time when we’re expected to quietly make music in our bedrooms. if we even have bedrooms of our own. That’s before we talk about all of the technology available to essentially manufacture performances as opposed to capturing/documenting them. Sure the girls, the artistic youth, need to put in their 10,000 hours. absolutely. no question. But there are reasons most of them have not begun doing so until AFTER 18. & otherwise have put in their 10,000 hours elsewhere. these are important things to consider. as they are affected by culture & policy, just as much as technology. it’s not just “laziness” and it’s not just “TikTok”.

I couldn't agree more. The culture is so different now and doesn't make it easy for people to take being a musician seriously. The policing of noise in suburban and urban areas makes it so hard for artist to practice their craft. The closure, time and noise restrictions of music venues, clubs, bars etc makes it hard for up and coming artists and entertainers to perform and practice. I think western based record labels not wanting to fund long term artist development programmes like they do in other parts of the world means that we get too many untrainned microwave artist and entertainers. Audiences are also to blame for not supporting new exceptional talent, we, the consumer/audience, are too lazy, time starved and poor to support new artist. Plus, people only supporting artists with a certain aesthetic means there is less variety when it comes to who gains traction on social media and the charts. Thank you! Simply blaming the 22 years old for not making good music and not also factoring in the cultural changes that got us here today is just a very lazy analysis. I’m surprised that Kim wouldn’t take these factors in lol, like it’s not hard to see how we got here. Also labels don’t invest in artist development anymore because they care so much about analytics today. Also with Spotify saying how often artist should release music, of course the music isn’t going to be good lmfaoo. Expecting artists of today to make quality music like yesterday when the industry of today looks vastly different from the industry of yesterday Is?!???

I think it’s larger than tik tok. It might just be the cultural landscape of today because I’ve seen a lot of conversations happen surrounding how we have no ‘it girls’ and I think similar could be said of the lack of icons. Everything’s so fragmented now (largely cos of social media and the internet) that it’s hard to have the same amount of cultural penetration as people did in previous eras- even if they’re supremely talented. I’m ok with the “mediocre blk girls” sometimes it’s like blk women over do it to prove some type of unspoken expectation of what black women should sound like in music. You don’t have to be screaming and dancing over the top . It’s like black women performers have to show out.
@theogturnip
@theogturnip Жыл бұрын
at some point we need to stop shaming these young girls who were never held to a higher standard by their labels and teachers, and blaming the industry that only promotes cheap music. if it was easier to make it as a Black person back in the day i guarantee you there would be mediocre singers back then but you needed to outsing EVERYONE to even be seen as a Black woman back then. and even whitney and mariah werent allowed to sing the songs they wanted bc their labels picked more white-appeasing generic pop songs to promote. its still largely the same today (Ari Lennox deserves wayy more promotion than she got and thats prob bc she isnt giving that vaguely Y2K stripper aesthetic all the Black girls are relegated to these days), but some Black aesthetics (which have been reduced down to hypersexual, flashy leotards, dancing/twerking, Cater 2 U type lyrics) are a trend now so its much easier for the likes of Chloe Bailey and Normani to just cash in on that aesthetic and get their coin fully convinced they are doing their best in the moment. Bc they are, eating up the choreo, and have incredibly solid vocals! Even though we as an audience have high standards doesn’t mean any of these contemporary girls understand what that entails especially those who are only guided by fast cash record labels and parents who just wanna live off their money and nothing else. Not everyone has parents like Beyonce who pushed her to be great by their generation’s standards and not everyone is lightskin and deemed worthy of constant promotion like Doja. The 90’s-00’s also brought about lots of producers that love to sabotage and control talented young black girls’ careers (think TLC, the other members of Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, Kelis, Nicki Minaj the list goes on and on) and its only gotten more covert and strategic in the 2010’s to now with the industry only promoting Rih and Bey alone for a good stretch of years, then suddenly we are saturated by girls who see what type of music gets attention and try to replicate that to get noticed. For their age, it all makes sense, but if they had support systems within their labels who actually cared to develop talent we wouldn’t be in this situation at all. It should not be their individual responsibility alone to do all this work to “better themselves” when they aren’t the only ones creating their image and picking their songs. We have to remember lots of these people have zero creative control due to predatory contracts that target young stars with no industry knowledge. and it also seems we disproportionately place that high expectation on Black girls bc where’s the mention of every mediocre (usually but not always male) rapper or pop-punk artist thats taken over the airwaves recently?? Surely there’s far more mid male artists and predatory record labels we can have this conversation about, but we always target the same girls (Chloe, Normani, Meg, Dua, etc.)… now why is that?? THAT’S a conversation worth having.

People forget about the actual legacy and pertinence of the Black church in everyday life for maaany, many years. You can directly correlate it’s decline in attendance and decentralization of its cultural paradigms to the overall degradation of the Black communities it once nurtured. That goes for the training grounds of its performers: great speakers, legendary drummers(their unique talent for complex syncopated rhythms and patterns) and guitarists(gospel, rock and blues guitarists making their instruments”talk” literally came from the phrase “a talk-back church”) , singers and vocalists got “free”, rigorous training (because you were singing/belting out complex compositions and harmonies 4-6 times a week due to the amount of services held. You would regularly have 3-4 on a Sunday starting at 6am, 10am, 3pm and again at 6pm for some. Add all the weekly commitments to that. These were extremely skilled people. Like the average Black churchgoer was. Not just the famous names you know like Aretha, Gladys, Patti, Whitney, etc. That’s how they learned to stand out. Everyone was decently skilled at something, so they had to be exceptional performers to “make it”. You can’t really get that today. People are learning on KZbin and other sm now.) to the other things that I won’t expound on: less nuclear families, loss of cultural identity, musical innovations, overall unity, etc. That’s why things aren’t the same. Even the crowds and audiences are different/more conservative now because of this. Such is life.

Watching Dorothy Dandridge keep up with the Nicholas brothers when she was primarily a singing act was INSANE. Watching Hazel Scott look like an absolute living doll while playing TWO pianos at once. The showmanship and effortless flair that performers put into their craft was mind blowing and it saddens me to see that these singers nowa-days BARELY even show up for themselves, let alone their fans, and they don’t improve. And even the entertainers now who have great performances don’t have catalogues to match. They don’t have classics. The entertainers who make good music aren’t getting money funneled into their showmanship so they CANT have both Also BRING BACK THE DAMN BRIDGE! Why are songs only 1:45 to 2:30 these days?!?! Most people listen to rap, pop, and/or experimental music. Most of the biggest female artists are rappers or pop stars who have used rappers to gain a following. So, a lot of the mainly R&B girlies are not going to get a lot of push by the company to get better at their craft or money to market their music because it’s not in right now.

@@A-M4 Summer Walker sophomore album "Still Over It" moved 175k units the first week in the billboard 200 and broke several streaming records for a female RnB artist. Ari Lennox' sophomore debuted and peaked at like 80 something on the charts. The math ain't mathing. She should be doing Summer and SZA numbers by now

The labels are to blame because they sign singers now based on how large of an online following they have and/or how attractive/marketable they look. Or because they wrote a little song and then it blew up on tiktok. They are no longer looking for talent first.

A girl who people should watch for is Hailey Kilgore. Hailey is an actress, Tony nominated. She is on the show Power Book 3: Raising Kanan. She played Carolyn Franklin in Respect with Jennifer Hudson. That girl can SANG. If you watch Raising Kanan, you would know that she showcases her singing on the show. She has a few singles out now. One is a ballad called "Hold Me." Such a beautiful song and the way that she sings it will bring tears to your eyes.

The songs are not well-written because they all use the template of Hip-Hop as their template. Those songs aren't written like R&B, they're written like rap. 2-bar loops instead of real sections of music where the harmony and melody takes you on a journey. As long as Hip-Hop is the foundation for the music the music will continue to suffer.

People hype up the mediocre artists then turn around and complain about them being mediocre. None of these mediocre artists wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for y’all promoting it. Also Chloe has the potential but she doesn’t have any good hits. She is an amazing singer and performer and I really want to see her win.

Exactly! What's frustrating is that she has done so much better in CxH. Every new single she releases just seems like it's having more and more creativity and that Chloe bailey flair being sucked out of it. It sucks that she seems to be sacrificing her originality all in pursuit of a hit song. For the night was kinda bland and that Latto feature sucked and it frustrates me because she HAS the talent.

I completely agree w everything you mentioned. However I do think there are small musicians who are still putting in that same level of high quality effort we expect from stars, they’re just ignored cause the average person has poor music taste. Pls check out Rina Sawayama, she is a gem of today that gives hope for the future of music!

greentea peng, doja cat, doechii, shygirl, celeste...just off the top of my head. All in their twenties still I believe. And besides, I don't think it's fair to put so much pressure on super young artists, some need time to mature and develop and find their voice. This clip and the one a few months back with FD signifier and needledrop Fantano bemoaning the current state of metal music, when the scene is actually THRIVING....is giving me second-hand embarrassment for my fellow millennials tbh.

On the UK side Black Lives in Music 2021 report highlighted the pay disparity between Black Women. Sadly I feel neoliberalism killed artist development (cc: Why the girls can’t sing video by Black Music Archives on KZbin); the elders had space to develop from young in schools to church and musical instruments being the household. Sadly Artist development has moved from community spaces to institutions (who are more time are not anti-racist)

Fandoms are to blame with mass streaming, they have skewed the charts so that their favorites get the numbers therefore they get the exposure and support rather than the most talented people. This isn't just American music it's all the music of the last 10 years, social media is literally the death of qualitative ARTISTRY.

PRECISELY!!! 📣🎯🎯🎯 I'm impressed by your musical taste and knowledge. I'm at least a few years older than you and I'm very much in the same boat. And much of that inspiration included with my birthright is the reason I'm an artist myself. Even with my experience, I don't look for perfection in an artist. BUT I grew up watching and loving many of the greats in their prime & my definition of ARTISTRY, Full Package Artist, Musicality & STAR POWER is just set up DIFFERENT from this gen. So I feel u. 💯

I'm old. I think a lot of this started with MTV. Before MTV you purchased a record because you liked the song. After MTV, people started purchasing records because of seeing the videos. It was no longer about the voices, it was about how an artist looked.
