Thanks for uploading this; I remember this series from 1973, & although I was only 13 years old, I do remember telling my Dad, " this show Won't last" & my Dad agreed. Monte Markham has Always been a Top- Notch actor, as the other cast members of this show, but the viewing public would Never accept Anyone playing Perry except Raymond Burr, & rightfully so! But Thanks again, I had wondered if this show was still in existence!

It was too early to think people were going to like this. We were still watching reruns of the old Perry Mason in 1973. My father religiously watched the reruns at midnight back in the 70's.

Heavens to Earl Stanley Gardner ! Thanks SO much for uploading the whole episode ! This short lived CBS series was cancelled in late Jan of 1974 (due to low ratings) so I didn't get a chance to watch any episodes when it first aired. Good cast but overall whether blah. No great shakes. I can well understand it not lasting even a whole season. And what a bad toupee Dane Clark ("Lt. Tragg") had. Very distracting ! :-)

Early on we see Hamilton Burger. Around the 10 minute mark, we see Gertie - played by Jack Klugman's character's wife from the Odd Couple. Forty seconds later we see Della. Still waiting for Paul Drake. I imagine he'll appear directly. That must be him at the 13 minute mark.

I guess Monte Markham wasn't another Raymond Burr, but he was one of the best actors of the period, and he went on to do non-fiction for the History Channel. Harry Gaurdino was a very well worked character actor of th period, appearing in several Clint Eastwood films, as well as the first season of MANIX. This Perry Mason remake didn't go, but it certainly had its moments.

PERRY MASON was Raymond Burr; and Raymond Burr was PERRY MASON. And Barbara Hale was the 'real' Della Street; William Hopper was the 'real' Paul Drake; William Talman was the 'real' Hamilton Burger; and Ray Collins was the 'real' Lt. Arthur Tragg. To try and reincarnate Erle Stanley Gardner's famous crime series in this particular modern setting with new actors (however capable they were) would never sit well with an audience who couldn't help but love the original. It also explains why the 1980s PERRY MASON Movies (again starring Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale) were far better received than this short-lived 1973 series... Interestingly enough, according to Wikipedia, PERRY MASON (which ran on radio from 1943 to 1955, and premiered on TV in 1957) might have been considered the nighttime equivalent to the popular crime soap opera, THE EDGE OF NIGHT (which premiered on CBS in April of 1956). Gardner was supposed to have written that serial as well; but it was created by Irving Vendig instead. And John Larkin (who played Perry Mason on radio) would become famous for his role as the first Mike Karr, policeman turned assistant district attorney representing the fictional city of Monticello... With two powerhouse crime shows such as these, it is no wonder that a rather devoted fan base would have trouble taking Monte Markham, Harry Guardino, Sharon Acker and Dane Clark seriously in their attempted roles...

Four other cast members of this episode were from the original Perry Mason. In addition to the judge (Byron Morrow - strangely uncredited this time around), there were: 1: Paul Richards (Jules Barron- the victim), 2: Woodrow Parfrey (Doctor Faraday), 3: Ross Elliott (Aaron Hayden), and 4: Kenneth Tobey (Detective Naismith). Some casting trivia: Richards completed the trifecta (albeit over two PM series)of victim, defendant, and murderer with this role. Parfrey became the only actor to be a murderer in both series. Elliott is best known in the original PM series as "the client who died twice" in the episode TCOT Corresponding Corpse. He also played (as himself) the Producer in the classic I Love Lucy Vitameatavegemin episode. Kenneth Tobey played an Assistant DA in a couple of episodes of the original series. In addition, Richard Collier (Erwin Beatty), while he never was in the original series, is best remembered as the doctor in Blazing Saddles who the classic line "Hush Harriet, that's a sure way to get him killed".

When the original show ended in 1966, it was doing okay in the ratings but not great, was expensive, had an exhausting production schedule, and thought to be out of fashion by the network. So it wasn't renewed. But CBS kept trying to find replacements to recapture its success for some years after. Eventually some honchos got the idea to just try rebooting Perry Mason directly and ended up with this....In the 80s crime shows had gotten popular again and NBC decided to do a proper revival as TV movies, also a lot easier for the original actors than a weekly series.

They thought Raymond Burr was too old in 1973! Perry Mason Returns in 1985 was such a massive hit, they made another 25 films, he filmed his last, The Case of the Killer Kiss in 1993 while terminally ill.

Besides, Burr was tired of Perry Mason long before it ended in 1966 and probably would not have done a weekly series at that time even if he were available. Four TV movies a year is a lot less work.

Sorry to say I totally agree. The whole cast (lots of familiar faces) tries their best but yes, it's a weak script. Rather ho hum overall. I can well understand the show being cancelled mid-season (in Jan of '74) due to low ratings. It had nowhere near the magic the original "Perry Mason" had. :-)
