Now we know who all of the vice-captains are in the present day, let's take a look at each new recruit - including a deep-dive look at the two brand new characters - and how they stack up! It might sound dumb since she doesn't play much of a role but Kiyone is one of my favorites I like her personality and bob haircuts are my weakness. Yachiru was up there too, I've always loved a small girl who's an incredibly fighter troupe in anime so she was one of my favorites off the bat too. Yuyu is also one of my favorites now too, gyaru, hyperactive personalities are fun and different in Bleach, and her power is very cool so I'm looking forward to seeing more from her. My number one favorite vice-captain though is Hiyori. In the story she was only a vice-captain for a few chapters but I've always loved her short-tempered & rude personality plus like Yachiru she's also a short woman (at 4'4½) who is a pretty good fighter. I doubt it but I really hope she shows up in the new chapters at some point.

I often feel like Akon is a bridge between Mayuri & his squad. Y'know, i can see a member of squad 12 coming up to Akon and asking him to ask Mayuri something for them because they don't want to bother Mayuri or are too scared to ask because Mayuri might deem it too unimportant. And then Mayuri would give Akon some orders to give to his squad because he himself is too busy doing experiments at the moment. And i love that thought.

Personally I see Atau being chosen as 7th Vice Captain as another connection Iba has with Komamura he loved so much. Komamura's best friend was blind and started his service in 7th division, was mistreated and that made him hate shinigami even more. Now Iba takes another person with disability, but treats him justly, and everyone around Atau mostly adapts to his problem. It's like him caring after those wolfman younglings, he really continues the legacy of his captain and the best things Komamura embodied. (Yeah, I like Iba and Komamura, I think their deep friendship and Iba's absolute loyalty are priceless.)

Not necessarily. There is more to sound than that. Being deaf and literally destroying your eardrums are very different things. Was amazing that Mask didn’t immediately start falling over after popping is eardrums. That would’ve destroyed his equilibrium. His body wouldn’t know which way is up

It is mentioned in one of the novels that Kiyone was very skilled with kido healing and was considered for a seat in sqaud 4. Unohana was the one that always went to treat Ukitake's health problems. But when Kiyone was about to become a member of gotei - Unohana selected her to be Ukitake's personal healer and suggested she be put in sqaud 13th instead of 4 to make things easier. I don't remember which novel this is refrenced. But I remember reading a conversation between Kyione and her sister, where Kiyone being offered the postion of vice-captain of sqaud 4, where this fact is mentioned.

These Lieutenants are making the replacement captains look weak in comparison. I’m really hoping we get to see Isane and others finally get some upgrades and power displays.

The issue is having Renji and Ikkaku remain lieutenants when we know they're stronger than some of the captains. I think it would've been better to leave Unohana's and Sajin's spot empty or have Hiyori (or even Hachi) and Love replace them.

@@afropirate6470 Her Bankai is gonna be a support type, so not OP but still useful. Judging from the name of her shikai, maybe it’s a cloud of ice or mist that freezes enemies, drains their reishi and transfers it to allies. That would be very useful in a big battle.

Atau's animal abilities are great and it's also interesting that others have specifically learned sign language to communicate with him. I like that Kiyone got a promotion even if she's somewhat obscure and got a rough reintroduction. We'll see them and the others in the hell arc.

The deaf/mute lieutenant highlights a glaring weakness of the zanpakuto that I always wondered about. If yours happens to have a particularly long incantation (Shunsui or Ukitake, for instance), that seems to be a big liability in battle.

I think that issue gets bypassed when one achieves bankai, since bankai users can release shikai without calling its name. Although, till that point, it would be a liability yeah.

Except the zanpakuto are an image of their own soul. So it's likely any incantation would be shortened naturally for the user. However, this will likely apply to kido etc.. as those incantations are the same no matter what

Atau's zanpakutō is probably differently abled too. It's not like he'd hear the name of his blade.

@@qb4428 Once someone achieved Bankai, they no longer need to call out the name or incantations, you can re-read the Soul Society Arc for this, it was really well explained!

I appreciate the younger, attractive designs, but I also IMO it’s been a while since Kubo has really come out with a design (generally older looking) that feels truly unlike anything ever seen in the genre. Characters like Zaraki, Kyoraku, Kommamura, and especially Mayuri. I think the last time he introduced characters of that vibe would be the zero division, or maybe As Nodt. Hopefully we’ll see some later this arc.

I’m pretty sure we’ll see more in the arc, I mean like Szaelaporro and Ukitake have gotten redesigns. The zero division and As Nodt were for sure unique. The captains you listed too are the most unique, you’ll never find that in another anime. I really did appreciate Baragan’s design, both before and after he transforms. I feel like another Aizen like character is missing, Tsukishima and Ginjo were great villains/antagonists, I need to see a character with strong beliefs or goals to be a villain.

@@stealthgamer4620 imo Barragan's ressurecion was insanely cool but the design was a tiny bit generic? I'd more say Nnoitora is a character ONLY Kubo could ever have created. Def hyped to see the hell villain designs tho, the potential is crazy. Won't be easy but personally I'd prefer the main villain feel different from Aizen/ Bach but be just as memorable.

Atau was really unique with how he releases his zanpakuto. I wonder of hes actually mute or chooses not to talk for some reason. Also it's a good thing his release command is so short seeing as how he has to write it out. Imagine having Kyoraku or ukitake's release phrases lol

Yeah but the 6th Division has always been led by a Kuchiki, the Captain of squad 6 has always been the current active Kuchiki Clan Leader

Both Atau and Yuyu are archetypes I normally don't care much for in manga/anime (Quiet prettyboy and Spunky Gyaru) but Kubo renders them both with enough depth and interesting aspects that they transcend their archetypal expectations for me.

Man she's like 150 at this point, it makes perfect sense that she's completely technology illiterate, it's weirder when we get characters who are completely fine and comfortable using modern technology honestly. Having weirdos who are obsessed with tech are fine though at that point, just throw them into the 12th division, or if she was living world obsessed, make her a 13th Division member.

Yayahara is a cool character but gyaru culture was bigger in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I thought maybe she died between that time period. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her.

I dont really understand this notion of them being the weakest generation of the gotei when they took on a much stronger version of the Quincies and Hollows than any other generation did. Maybe at the beginning they were amongst the weakest generation but after the TYBW and CFYOW it could be say that they among the strongest maybe not as strong as the first generation but still up there

I have a bias towards Yuyu given I like most Gyaru character's I've seen during my time of Anime so far, so she's already instantly placed higher on my favorite list, Also happy to see her not just being a looker and is actually capable of fighting, her powers are definitely interesting. Atau though is still pretty cool, I like him already and I love the introduction of his Zanpaku-to, Being mute AND deaf is definitely unique, I look forward to seeing more of him as well. But yeah long story short, my bias of Gyaru characters has me loving Yuyu already, though I really like Atau as well, definitely hope to see more of them in the future.

The 'squares' and 'formula' is a reference to a mahjong hand. It makes more sense as a Kido than a release command, to me.

Atau's nature compared to Ulquiorra's time as a Vasto Lorde strike a hellaciously interesting contrast to each other and the realms they inhabit. It gives a lot of space to think.

I think Atau's looks may be in contrast to the seventh division as you said, but I'm gonna make the prediction by how quick he was to act in the battle that he's going to be a man of action. Truly manly things aren't portrayed by words or appearance, but the actions taken I think he's going to embody manliness in his own way like Momo from Sakigake Otokojuku he didn't necessarily look like a thug or as manly as the other characters and didn't say much, but by his actions he becomes a true leader of men. We're still too far out to know for sure, but I'm putting my prediction here.

I think maybe yayahara's shikai powers are dependant on whatever way she styles her nails. Right now her nails had fangs and a bear paw on them. But perhaps she could do different things with different colours and motives.

Of the two new characters introduced, Atau is definitely my favorite. First of all, I like his design and his outfit. From what little we see of him, like you I'm also a fan of his kinda quiet and respectful personality as a foil to Iba being this loud over-the-top macho man. And his Zanpakuto... My god, it's already one of my favorites in the series. From the unique way he activates it, all the way to the animal based powers, it's just awesome.

We had a Father-son relation in Div 6 with Ginrei-Sajun. Also an uncle-niece with Shunsui-Nanao and Daughter-son with Mayuri-Nemu. As per Kiyone, one od the novels stated that Kiyone was good at healing hence she was taking care of Ukitake. The missing one is Iemua who was Div 7 VC as per one of the novels.

Yuyu is indeed weird. She has an unique design and I do like that, but she seems a bit more like Yoruichi Shihõin, where Yoruichi didn't fight with a blade either just with her martial arts and Shunkõ and during the Thousand year blood war arc with her massive spiritual pressure that took the form of a cat, where Yuyu Yayahara's spiritual pressure more takes on the form of a bear. Yoruichi was also more the agile kind of fighter and what we have seen from Yuyu (where she is able to crack bones with every step she takes when charging on that Hell Hollow) she's more the heavy brawler. I do like her nails though because she has bear paws and the jaws painted on them.

i loved the new editions and like you said, the growth in tech shown, I loved that the characters were doing a face time at one point and talking about getting tvs in the soul society since in the turn back the pendulum arc shinji had a record player and I thought that was a nice nod to show advancement

Thanks for the video, i kinda needed this because there is so much going on in that chapter. Changing the subject... will you ever do a top 10 strongest shinigamis (excluding ichigo obiouvsly)? Since i'm suggesting it i wanna give my own takes on that sharing my list with some explanations. 10 Toshiro Hitsugaya: i think that there were a bunch of people who could deserve this spot (like Hirako Shinji being the leader of the vizards and likely the strongest or Sajin Komamura for his power up with the human form, Nimaya being the creator of the zampakutos and they say he is an incredible swordman even if kubo didn't show us that... and you could think of other examples) but in the end i wanted to give this spot to Toshiro because of the power he reaches EoS despite the lack of experience due to his young age, i think that with time he will most probably become one of the strongest characters ever. 9 Mayuri Kurotsuchi: this spot also i was not sure who to put (on the other 8 places i'm pretty convinced) but at the end i think that Mayuri is one of the side characters that has more wins for his screentime, he is resourceful and smart and with the right preparation he can always come up with a plan to win, i think he deserves that. 8 Byakuya Kuchiki: to me Byakuya is the emblem of the perfect capitain, he is one of the most skilled in kido, he has one of the fastest shunpo, he has a broken zampakuto which he mastered inventing plenty of crazy abilities, he is also calm, collected and intelligent so his mind is also strong. 7 Kyoraku Shunsui: i don't think i have to explain this, actually maybe you thought i could put him higher but i think here is fair, maybe you could switch him up one position but not much more. He defeated the primera espada with his shikai, he single handedly defeated one of the strongest quincys, he has a confusing broken power and he is skilled in kido as well, he is also pretty smart, basically a Byakuya 2.0, he is the new captitain of squad 1 for a reason. 6 Kisuke Urahara: probably the most intelligent character capable of coming out of any situation with a plan probably even better than mayuri, you never feel like he has the lower hand, he is a crazy inventor who can pull of at any time a new crazy quirky invention which comes in handy at the right moment, probably in the top 3 best kido users with a seemingly super versatile power in his zampakuto. 5 Unohana Retsu (or should i say Yachiru Kenpachi): i don't think there are many characters who can absolutely destroy Zaraki repedeatly and kill him over and over again as she did, plus she is a master of healing, the first Kenpachi although her full capabilities and her zampakuto powers remain not clear. 4 Zaraki Kenpachi: one of the most gifted shinigamis, the only one able to defeat the first Kenpachi, he has an immense reiatsu, so much so that for the most part he doesn't have to use anything else than his base sword and his crazy strenght, i don't think i have to explain it too much, i think that he could go up the list if he manages to master his bankai. 3 Ichibei Hyosube: the next three characters are kinda difficult to place, Ichibei is the creator of bankai, he has one of the most broken zampakuto, he is the leader of squad 0, he stood strong for a period of time against Ywach... i mean i don't think i have to justify too much why theese characters are up here. 2 Shigekuni Genryusai Yamamoto: the pinnacle of power (i kinda wanted to put him at first place), master of kido (we see him use some really high level kidos), his shunpo is crazy fast (as we saw in the soul society arc against Kyoraku and Ukitake), he has an immense reiatsu, his zampakuto is probably the most destructive ever and probably the most powerful in terms of attack, he wrecked false Ywach and i think that is what would have happened against the real one too (that's why they had to sacrifice the false one to weaken Yama), i decided to put him above Ichibei because i think that his ink wouldn't even reach Yama since it would get incinerated in so many ways (if he has the cloack of fire of his bankai active he doesn't even have to defend, it would simply disintegrate in his nearings). 1 Aizen Sosuke: i'm talking about him without Hogyoku and still i think he is number one. He has Yamamoto and Zaraki level of reiatsu (or maybe even more since what he could do to the royal palace just by lifting a finger), probably the most skilled kido user, probably the most broken zampakuto power of all and that was only the shikai, we cannot even imagine what his bankai could be, he flexed on almost every strong character in the series, i think is fair to put him on number one spot.

Could Atau be another sleeper or even child of Aizen? He made plays and plans for everything, having someone that seems so softhearted and in tune with nature and animals plus doesn’t speak would make sense for him. Having control or conjuring with animals like birds and butterflies may seem like a stretch but even the 7th insignia is an iris which has a variation called a butterfly iris. Long shot I know but his look is simple yet unique but took me back to aizen in his nonthreatening version when we first met him.

Yuyu makes me think of Rangiku but dialed up to 11. She always seemed a bit style focused but Yuyu takes that and combined it with Gal culture. Her nails are likely linked to her power. I'm also curious because at least one of them has an animal paw print on it. This could be linked to how it turns into that spirit beats that clamps down. I wonder if it could be fixed or changed, so like how she styles her nails changes how her power manifests. The "Unreleased form" can be a bit confusing if this is her Zampakto. Even then, if she has an always Shikai like Ichigo the question is, what is it. They don't appear like finger tip caps so would be be a literal set of acrylic nails she has to have put on or something. Its cool in the sense of what it does but outside of that the questions of "how" may be a bit weird. I like the deaf guy. I wonder if maybe its name is that it doesn't have a name because it too is deaf. It is a little contradictory, since obviously writing is possible, but it would be curious if its name is "literal silence."

It's easy to forget that most of the Shinigami are actually very old. Rukia is 100+ years old (she tells this to Ichigo in Ch.1) so it's understandable that the Soul Society is so floored by technology, and why Yayahara is such an oddity amongst them.

I’m not sure I can pick between the two new vice captains! Atau’s character seems deeply meaningful for the division while Yuyu represents the youthful new era. Both are amazing and I hope we see more of them!

Yuyu and Atau are a perfect representation of Kyoraku’s new generation of the Gotei, and bleach as a whole. They’d never have been able to join under Yamamoto, for their own reasons, but the new head captain recognized the need for change, and these two are a great start

You *might* remember?? It was *something* of a big deal?? That new Bleach content was one of the highlights of my year. I remember getting into Bleach back during the Hueco Mundo arc I believe, so the weekly releases were something to continuously look forward to. To have the anticipation regained from seeing that new content would be released was something I hadn't felt in years, and it was heightened by the fact that the manga had ended years ago.
