I think I can claim unc status in the Sonic fandom because I'm old enough to remember some of the OLD ass Sonic fan content and discourse. It's silly some of the stuff people split hairs on within Sonic media, which was a thing even back in the day too. Like it's kind of funny listening to some of the takes about Sonic's storytelling in particular and the whole "Japanese Sonic" discourse over games when I remember their reputation for years. Like half the dialogue of the game is the cast explaining the controls and giving exposition to you and even then you'll have people fighting over singular scenes for years in moments that never come up again in later years. More than anything, I think Sonic fans of any age need to recognize that people like the idea of Sonic more than he is portrayed in any of the official media he exists in, which is also a big part of why fanmade media influences the Sonic fandom in a way a lot of other franchises don't. I don't mean that as a criticism either--I love Sonic, but I also recognize that most of the media when I actually interrogate it doesn't leave up to a constructed ideal I might think I have in mind with him. I feel like a lot of people get their Sonic causality backwards and try to twist him into this singular idea of what they want him to be when no media in Sonic's history will ever fully or continually live up to that. We don't need to engage in either generation wars, localization wars, historical revisionism or whatever way we're twisting Sonic takes and media this week.

This isn't just about Sonic, this is about all kinds of fandoms. We need to listen to younger people and people in general, I'm not unc status but I'm a young adult, the biggest struggle I had growing up was nobody taking me serious JUST because I was a kid. i didnt play sonic until around 2007 so I had a pretty big backlog to go through but I had a good time for the most part, even 06 with how broken it is gave me some fun times and internet crawling on some peoples takes on it. Fandom wasnt as toxic back then it was mostly the journalists spouting the inflammatory rhetoric back then about the series. Nowadays though no one knows how to keep it civil. I def think social media has just tarnished how fandoms work. I see the same thing in all of them.

So I became a Sonic fan in 2017, but what made me a Sonic fan was watching Sonic X and watching the cutscenes to Sonic Adventure 2. This puts me in an interesting spot where I didn't live through the 90s, and I didn't know much about Sonic during the early 2000s, yet I'd say the games that came out during the early 2000s are my favorites.

We oughta find a balance. A lot of us who grew up with the "dark" era games got to enjoy Sonic at a point when they were releasing enjoyable games at a high rate (Even tho a lot of the games were very unpolished) that portrayed the characters in a perfect way for what they were in the "golden" era of the Dreamcast. Then we had to endure the "meta" era because SEGA thought the best decision to fix what older fans and critics at the time were fairly correctly saying (that SEGA was jumping the shark at each game to see what sticks) was having the most bland, uninspired and scarce games for 13 years after 2009 And we now have higher hopes and expectations after Frontiers and Shadow Generations so we don't really want the general modern audience, who's most first-hand experience at playing a Sonic game is a low-bar like Forces or Lost World and watched like 3 videos about how 06 or Black Knight are underrated masterpieces, be the loudest feedback SEGA and Sonic Team have. As you said history will repeat itself if not taught correctly, we need to find a way to educate the new audience about the mistakes of SEGA in the past or how Sonic got into such a bad situation and how we can gear the franchise together into a better direction. We don't need Elitism but we need to teach new Sonic fans so they can catch up and give the correct feedback if the games start steering in the wrong direction again and not say literally wrong things like "06 is overhated and it did not doom the franchise" or "Forces is actually not mediocre". And this goes for all fans for the love of God stop "formula", "voice actors", "quill size", etc flame wars. We could really enjoy our franchise without every single comment section having an alienating flame war over why Roger Craig Smith is the worse disgrace to ever touch Sonic or something.

This #//Newfantalk reminds me of how people treat Ian Flynn. In a sense that it feels like a repeat of the 2000s, where people’s complaining are over the top compared to the actual problem. But when you look at it, Sonic’s friends was never a problem, it was unfinished and/or unpolished gameplay styles forced upon you to play, or playing the same game multiple times. Ian making references wasn’t the real issue, it was how many there was in Frontiers. And yet the Gens rewrite’s references gets so much hate for no real good reason for the most part, with even some of Ian’s haters thinks the hate is too much.

@metaltrashbucket Frankly, it's franchise killer reputation is overblown compared to offenders like Sly Cooper Thieves in Time where that game put the series on ice to this day as of this writing for around a decade or Final Fight Sreetwise PS2 where the series itself is still a dead brand even after other similar series like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon have made their comebacks with the characters largely relegated to the Street Fighter roster since then. Sonic 2006 may have been a next gen misfire but so were a lot of other games coming out around the console transitional period and we can blame most of it on Yuji Naka choosing to leave Sonic Team at a crucial point.

When it comes to the "revisionism" you were talking about, I think there is an actual point. I think it's good to appreciate good that less stellar releases. But the newer fans take it too far and basically say "you are objectively incorrect for disliking a game with egregious flaws". No, it's completely understandable for someone to dislike how unfinished 06 is. I really feel like fans are just so polarising. You rarely ever see people say "mid", "mediocre", "just okay", "fine". It's always the worst thing to grace humanity or the literal second coming. This is why nuanced conversations can never happen. People are so hellbent on being right about their blue savior that they must always go to the extreme. That way they can disregard the good of the opposition and prop up the good on their side. People never want to say anything good about games like Forces. But then never admit the faults of games like Adventure 2. Nuance is never an option with these people.

Tbh I've just kinda tuned out of most Sonic discourse online. The people my age who got into the series with the GameCube era have proven that we have not learned from our predecessors when it comes to engaging with the new generation, and are now doing the same thing to people who got into the series during the 2010s as we had done to us by 90s era fans. We have to be able to be ok with people expressing their opinions, and if necessary share our own experiences as context rather than trying to lecture newer fans about their own experiences being "incorrect" or whatever. Before even watching this video, I'ma say it. I grew up loving Sonic and thinking he was cool watching sonic x, sonic v. nazo and playing sonic rpg and sonic smash bros. flash beta. I drew fan art of dark sonic and made crazy form changes in 3rd and 4th grade and I remember being distinctly alone in my love. I remember being 18 or 19 in a family reunion when the first sonic movie came out, and younger cousins I didn't really know watching me draw characters in my sketchbook that weren't in the movies yet. And you know what? It was fun telling them all about the games and the characters, it made me happy knowing something I enjoyed was being passed onto a new generation. Literally how are there sonic "fans" out there genuinely upset that there's a newer generation of people enjoying the stuff they did when they were younger? It's ridiculous.

I'm almost 13 and I got into the franchise when I was 3 with the PS3 version of Sonic CD, bro I had like 14 Sonic games on my PS3 it was fire, I remember not getting past the second stage on SA2 and I did not even FIND the second stage on SA1. And Sonic Gens was peak. What good times.

You got further into SA2 then I could, I couldn’t get past the literal first platforming challenge after the loop in City Escape. Good that you got into the series with Sonic CD’s remake. I had the mobile version and it is my favourite Sonic Game. I will say you are lucky to be have a game like Shadow Gens come out of this series in your early teens. For my 13th I got Sonic Forces, alongside Mario Odessey.

I HATE CLASSIC SONIC GAMEPLAY AAAAAA Sonic Forces was a downright bad downgrade from Gens. And I bought Mario Odyssey this year on my 2yr/o switch, it's peak. @Slimeonian I would argue Forces actually came closer to killing the franchise than 2006 did given that morale was already down the toilet after the underwhelming Sonic Lost World, the disaster of Rise of Lyric which ended Boom's prospects of being the new Sonic the Hedgehog going forward, the whole Ken Penders lawsuit and the internet discourse for the series was at it's peak. 2006 was a troubled project with a troubled production history which has been well documented, was promised as the start of the new era for Sonic as per the marketing and the transition period from the sixth to seventh console generation was rife with misfires like Sonic 2006. So much was stacked against it from the get-go, and Sega is at fault for being so set in getting it done for Christmas 2006. Sonic Forces was supposed to be the debut of the Hedgehog Engine 2 and was promised to be a return to form for the series like 2006 was after Lost World but what we got was a worse version of Generations that killed the momentum Mania had generated earlier that year and the point where confidence in Sonic Team was at its' lowest despite Forces outselling Mania by a good amount after it came to light following the Famitsu article on how long the game was being worked on versus the time it took to develop the new engine. Four years from beginning work in 2013 to its completion in 2017 and only one of those four years was used to actually make the game itself while Mania took around the same amount of time yet it was a better game overall. Sonic Team were given more time for Forces than they did for 2006 and knew the 25th anniversary was on the way in 2017. You can check the forums about Sonic Team between 2017 and 2022. The general consensus was either that people wanted Christian Whitehead and his team to take over the series from Sonic Team or were just done with them after being given that many chances to salvage themselves. Plus if the dev interviews that came out regarding Sonic Frontiers' development is anything to go by, the reception of Forces and how it affected their reputation really does make Frontiers a last chance saloon for them. Just so we're clear here, the damage 2006 caused was cushioned a little by releases like Rush Adventure and Unleashed being near enough to keep the ship afloat on top of the sales from licensed media including merchandising and among other things. Sega still saw him as a moneymaker even despite that. Forces? It came out four years after Lost World, the next console game TSR came out three years later to a severe curbstomp from the competition CTR NF was giving it, Sonic Boom's run ended in 2017 after two seasons on CN, there was a whole year in 2017 where Sonic had no new comic book on the shelf outside of Force's digital only four-part prequel, we had the underwhelming Tomy Era and of course, we have the first live action movie when they had that hideous first design for Sonic that was meant to release in 2019 before getting delayed to 2020. Yakuza was being viewed as Sega's new favourite child and Forces is symptomatic of everything wrong with Sonic's 2010's. Suppose you could say this all began because of 2006 but even that could considered be inaccurate and one could argue that the cancellation of Sonic X-Treme, the mistep of Shadow's 2005 spin-off or Sega taking away the wrong lessons from 2006 are the points that led Sonic to the slump he'd be in throughout most of the 2010's.

I believe in some interviews around Frontiers, it was said that if Frontiers hadn’t been a success that they would’ve just put the game series on a pause, and focused on other stuff, like the movies. I mean the final boss of Frontiers was literally called The End after all. Investors were getting sick of the games not being received too well after Lost World, Boom and Forces, so they were all about too pull out. Luckily with the success of the movies and Frontiers, Sonic is having a sort of renaissance right now

The absolute lows of WWF's New Gen Era and WCW Hulk Hogan still acting like it was the 80's. This was only a few years from the infamous steroid scandal during 1992-1993 that saw the 80's boom of Hulkamania come to a stop just to give you a frame of reference here. Only when ECW gained traction, the late Scott Hall debuting on WCW Nitro as a member of the Outsiders who infamously became the n.W.o when Hulk Hogan became Hollywood Hogan and the WWF letting Steve Austin get rid of the daft Ringmaster gimmick to become Stone Cold Steve Austin before Bret Hart really took him to the moon at WM13 in their famous No DQ Submission match that truly ignited Austin's rise to the top rwhich in turn led to the Rock becoming just as big of a star when Austin chose him out of everyone else to be his WM15 opponent during the popular Attitude Era. The first two examples forced the WWF or rather it's now-infamous Vince McMahon to basically give the company an overhaul to get with the times and that paid off in the end as the WWF would end up emerging as the victor after 2001 when they brought out WCW and ECW just in time for Wrestlemania 17/X-Seven. You can check out the likes of Wrestling Bios for their coverage on these topics. Why I'm sharing this history lesson with you besides the fact that a lot of what goes on in pro wrestling itself makes for great metaphors for almost everything and basically recommending Wrestling Bios? I bring it up because Sonic was in that similar slump circa 2017-2019 and 2021 to the WWF's late 1994-early 1996 with 1995 their worst year (You just have to look at the main event of WM XI and it's not Bret Hart or HBK) overall until Steve Austin came in at the beginning of 1996 after his work in ECW and like the 2020 Sonic movie, things didn't get off to a great start when they had him debut as the Ringmaster but once he started coming out as Stone Cold Steve Austin and HBK being forced into a four year retirement at WM14 after helping run Bret out of the WWF the year prior; the rest as they say is history. I do expect Sonic to go down from the heights of 2020-2024 like the WWF after 2001, it'll be hard to go any lower than the mid to late 2010's and the movies will have helped funnel in more new fans than the Meta Era ever did to offset the down period. A series like Sonic really does live and die by its ability to generate a consistent stream of new blood and new fans. Otherwise, you get the current comic industry trying to play catch up with the manga industry and most of the readerbase being made up of middle-aged adults with expendable income but even that's drying up given the times we're living in now.

Sonic Unleashed was released in that awkward gap between 2007 and 2009 for platformers.

I've been preaching since the start of the 2010s hate train about how stupid Sonic discourse is nowadays, because when people started to go after games like Colors and treat it as 'the new worst game in the series that caused everything to go wrong', that's when it cemented in my brain that no one learned ANYTHING from when the 2010s were the current decade. The main issue with this fandom is that Sonic has evolved to a point where his character and world can be adapted in so many different ways, almost akin to comic book superheroes. This has been a thing since the whole 'JPN v. US lore' that resulted in stuff like SATAM and Archie and how there are fans of that interpretation of the character. But because there are so MANY, it causes division because people feel the need to stand by one version of the character that they consider the 'true Sonic'. Easy example being most haters of the movies literally hate them because it does not line with their 'true Sonic'. The fact people are still falling into the same traps and are now showcasing shitty behaviours that were once done to them by people back when it was cool to shit on the 2000s is just sad. It's gotten to a point where you can't even discuss lil' quirks about character designs without it turning into a fucking war, because everyone feels like they gotta preach what they prefer like it's an objective fact, practically baiting people to get into arguments. People were unironically doomposting at the first Sonic Frontiers trailer because the character model was from Forces. That's the level of pathetic we are at. I wish people opened their eyes and realised they're contributing to a cycle of bullying that does not need to exist. But unfortunately since it's Twitter, and Twitter encourages your worst aspects, the wide fandom's practically doomed to repeat things over and over again, just with a new coat of paint behind it like with this stupid new hashtag. To anyone else who reads this, if you want my advice on how to get around this community, find smaller circles or communities. There are places out there where you can co-exist and enjoy this franchise for everything it has. It's what I did once I quit Twitter and genuinely it improves one's mental wellbeing tenfold.

Gatekeeping in Sonic fandom is also terrible on Tik Tok, I’ve seen a ton of videos where ppl say that someone isn’t a ‘real’ sonic fan if their favorite character is someone like Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Eggman or Shadow. They act like u NEED to know every single character, like I’m sorry but it’s so dumb to tell someone they can’t be a fan of something if they can’t name the hundreds of Sonic characters in pure confidence. But it’s also sad to see (mainly newer fans) list off a bunch of characters and say ‘do I know enough characters to be a real fan’. If you like the franchise, characters, games, world/story etc then u are a real fan.

As someone who has obsessively looked into the development history of rise of lyric, wishes it released how big red button wanted it too, and loves the designs. Rise of lyrics is not a good game and is worse than 06 end of discussion. I was born in 2003, I only experienced the adventure and classic era games through a hand me down ps2 and re-releases, the new games coming out when I was young were the Roger games. Icl that Boom: Rise of Lyric revisionism had me cracking up when I see that 😂😂. I think this fandom has gone deep into changing the narrative of past games.
