I actually work at one of the last independent newspapers in the US. Thank you for bringing awareness to the importance and difficulties of the local newspaper industry. It’s a huge struggle to stay afloat. I hope this helps people understand that news is vital to our democracy, but it’s not free to produce, and we need readers and supporters to help keep things going. Thank you, Hasan and the rest of the Patriot Act crew. I’m going to share this with my publisher.

Thank you for covering this! My paper once had nearly 40 staff members. The paper has been around since the 1800's. But now there is only two reporters including myself. I cover three cities and one county. That includes all police, business, crime, politics, civic, education, and entertainment stories. I also curate the opinion page. And on top of that Idaho politicians want to get rid of a law that requires local governments to post advance notice of agendas and public hearings, etc. That is printed in local newspapers. How will people recieve notice about important political policies and changes if we dont print the agendas and notices ahead of time? Also it's a HUGE chunck of our revenue. We're losing on every front.

But isn't the core problem then the lack of revenue? And I guess as an addendum the lack of stimulus capital ? I am guessing it is much harder for dying papers to take out loans as compared to these Hedge funds. So the problem is one of capital.

Private equity was also responsible for the utter destruction of local radio stations in the early 2000s. I was personally a witness to this process, as my mom (an award-winning morning radio personality and news reporter) went from making a good living to making so little she had to have two other jobs to being laid off. Private equity bought up tons of independent local stations that were super successful, then did the leveraged buyout thing and fired TONS of amazing local talent. Then they basically just hired a bunch of people just out of college for much lower salaries who could just play a bunch of nationally syndicated shows and music. No more local news, sports, music, or hosts who were connected to the actual community. It was such a crime.

Hey Mackenzie! I thought it was the big conglomerates that took over local radio stations after the Telecommunications Deregulation act passed in the mid-90s. I had approved abroad at that time so I am a little hazy on the sequence of events but curious to know where private equity fits in here- unless they were given the same green signal that conglomerates were.

An American private equity firm was also responible for killing one of the oldest chains of fashion department stores in The Netherlands. They bought the company during the financial crisis, then split the real estate and the stores housed in them into 2 separate companies. Next they raised the rent for the real estate up the point that the stores were bled dry and had to file for bankruptcy... leaving the private equity with a shit ton of money that went back to the USA and prime real estate in all major cities, and thousands of people unemployed here.

There was discrepancy in every segment he covered about India, from InDian politics to cricket. He is highly biased , politically and religiously. He is highly favourable to Muslims and left wing. I agree with Hasan on everything here. However, prompted by some of the comments I see under this video, I want to remark that there is one more aspect to the bigger picture. We all need to learn how to evaluate information more objectively, how to exert a healthy dose of skepticism towards everything we learn or discover, how to self-analyze and understand our own subjective biases -- doing our best to remove this primitive heuristic lens, filter that we use to perceive the world. Think back to high school: were we not taught how to differentiate statement of fact from an opinion? What happened to "consider the source"? What are the stakes for the person delivering the message, what is their motive? Society is built on trust, so it is wrong to mistrust every source (especially wrong to mistrust the source if we don't like the message), and yes, we live in a golden-age of conspiracy theories... Just read some of the comments... But we should take the time and care to verify the information that affects our daily life. That is OUR responsibility, as much as it is the journalists' responsibility to deliver good information to us.

Honestly, I wouldn’t really call all conspiracy theorists bad in of itself. I’m not talking about bullshit like flat earthers or climate change deniers. I know most conspiracy theories are wrong, but please hear them out at least because a few ones who are really true can have a major effect on society. Conspiracy theory simply means a secret plan by the government or some powerful organization that is deeply corrupting the common people. I mean, think about it. Should we really trust everything the powerful say? I mean, back when Chinese officials suppressed the evidence of coronavirus, the idea of a widespread pandemic coming was seen as overly paranoid at best. It was seen as a conspiracy theory then. If people just looked at the evidence and at least heard it out, less people would have died today. It feels like people just use “conspiracy theory,” as a synonym for “a false theory,” when it’s far from that. The thing about critical thinking is that we can’t just latch on to certain groups as the ones with critical thinking, and have all the power on knowledge, because as a scientist - usually it’s the well funded studies that gets spread out more. Completely unfair to scientists in poverty who can get a break through. I’m not saying famous organizations are all wrong, but I just don’t want people to value the opinions of such organizations just because they’re famous. I want you to value them because you know you took the time to check both sides of the story, no matter how ridiculous it sounds, and decided what has more evidence. I suggest studying the types of cognitive biases and logical fallacies please if you would like more practical advice on thinking critically. Often people just comment for others to think critically, without actually telling people how. It’s been getting a little repetitive to me honestly.

When it comes to things like food, games, music, or anime, asians are revered, but once it goes to American politics nobody gives a single shit about us. During the Democratic debate, I had to listen to one of my favorite candidates say something along the lines of "all races, white, black, and latino"-no mention of asians. That's how little we matter in politics. It's also why Hassan had to make the video the other day because nobody blames asians for their part in horrendous incidents either. We're just invisible...

00:11 I remember in high school that every week I was to watch a news report or read a news article and write a paper on it. At the time we were learning writing skills and all of my teachers told me that the news is about being informative. News pieces should not have opinions in the articles, but any time the word should is used we can safely assume that the correct course of action is not being taken at that time. Years later in University my friends were telling me about news literacy and how to analyze the news. I told them that I do not need an update on how to analyze the news. THE NEWS STATES FACTS AND WE READ AND LEARN THE FACTS. Anything that is not a fact does not belong in the News. Opinions, baseless predictions, and fluff feel good information are to be ignored. There are other outlets for such things. I guess my high school teachers were not aware of the news ultimate goal of making money and deciding that opinions draw more attention than facts. In today's society the news can be stated in 3-5 minutes, but most of the information received is an opinion. News no longer informs, it just sways opinions. I discussed the rise of opinions, but not the downfall of factual information. I did it in this order because that is the evolution chain of the news. It started as factual information being important followed by opinions and spectacles making leading stories and finally the manipulation of stories in order to gain viewers resulting in a diversion from facts. If the news is not to inform but to sway opinion we will see multiple stations all taking their own opinions from each fact. I.E. Fox, CNN, and many more stations.

I just went to the Hasan show yesterday and remembered (I guess I was traumatized) Anyways… I remember we stopped buying product overseas, stopped paying our vendors. The company moved to Dallas and that’s when I started working for them. It was in downtown and I realized it was a sketchy company. I was hired as a sourcing import coordinator. I was stunned we kept canceling our vessels or stopped paying our brokers. Slowly the company wilted down. I’m so happy I found this video. Because I remember knowing in 2019 that our parents company was owned by Alden but had no idea what that meant. Thank you for sharing! Y’all would not believe the shit I saw while working for them.

Most of the news networks are owned by industrialists close to the govt and Govt MPs. The comedians are source of news and news channels have become comedy channels . The communal hate and brainwashing is just horrible. And a couple of journalists who are honest are harassed, thrown out of their jobs due to govt pressure and even arrested at times. It's another plandemic. The people who have taken over the government and American business don't want real news around. That's how "fake" news became a thing. One real good defense to this is for journalists and regular citizens are to break news on social media even if it means it's their second job or a hobby. What the TikTok community and K- Pop fans did to Trump's Tulsa rally showed the power social media gives to the people.

You'd be surprised how fucking resilient these journalists are, how hardworking they are. But most importantly, we strive for accuracy. It gets hard, having to juggle multiple stories a day, sleep in the newsroom, survive off of cold pizza (that is if youre not already too busy to even eat) but the thing that keeps us going is knowing how important our work is to the community. When violence broke out May 29 between protesters and city police, CNN or the Post werent there in the front line taking rubber bullets, breathing in tear gas and getting detained, it was me and other local papers.

When I was in graduate school one of my professors specialized in the evolution of tv news. We brought up this subject and he had the best explanation I ever heard. TV news divisions, back in the time of Walter Cronkite, were not expected to turn a profit. They were viewed as a public service and a national responsibility of the networks. As such, the way they tried to generate ratings through quality and credibility. That changed in the late 70’s as NBC, if I remember right, became the first to demand news divisions turn a profit and the others soon followed. Then came networks like CNN were the news was all their was to turn a profit. This marked the change to when news started to focus more on sensationalism than “real” news to get ratings. They actually did a good job of showing this change in humorous form in Anchorman 2

Don't forget that the consolidation of media which became legal from the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1997 allowed corporations to basically own all the media. So if our sources for news are beholden to corporate owners and their interests, does that then conflict with actually informing the public? In a sense then, doesn't news kind of turn into a form of propaganda? In my opinion, it is no accident that just about all sources of mainstream news are owned by a handful for corporations. Mission accomplished.

"... treat them like the essential services they are." ... I think it's kind of ironic that all the examples he gives are services that Americans either don't like to pay for or have paid for, or are tradionally badly funded in the first place ... And the way I see it, it's a problem that tends to arise, when public services are more and more required to turn a profit instead of providing value via them providing their services. That said, great video with a lot of insights, wasn't aware how dire this particular situation is over there :/

It’s just what we don’t pay in taxes. Instead of giving the requisite money to the government, there’s more freedom of spending.

Hasan and your team, thank you!! I just watched this episode yesterday and The Journal podcast on WSJ happened to talk about private equity on the show today! Thank you for being the forefront of in investigative journalism and props for pointing out the major stakeholder behind news industry or even every industry in America! With the pandemic, private equity firms have become the reason why companies have gone bankrupt. Why do they not get in trouble when dumping bunch of debts on companies..

Here in Germany, we have a handful of taxpayer funded news stations. They are legally seperated from political leadership and they aren't profit driven, meaning that they don't have any incentive for clickbait and partisan scandals. You guys look like you could use that approach right now.
