I am a huge (and I mean HUGE) fan of The Band and although nobody will ever sing this song as well as Levon Helm this is a fantastic cover version. The Zac Brown Band is an amazing group in their own right and they did The Band massive justice with this beautiful rendition.

I agree. Levon Helm's vocal performance of this song in The Last Waltz is perhaps THE best ever recorded. This is one of the better cover versions I've heard. I probably won't listen to it again though.

Good cover. Nothin beats what Scorse captured. This song captures the darkest time in American history...yet today, “everyone” tries to ignore it...sad. So many brothers died. Our nation is riddled with the bones of basically children.

Wonderful. Robbie Robertson and the Band, and these guys. Nuts! Song means a lot about our American history, and futility of sending our young men off to war.
@atlarge9886 жыл бұрын
Agreed it is a great cover and tribute to The Band. Also it does mean a lot to US history and so many people now misinterpret that. But the song is not about the "futility of sending our young men off to war". Rather, and let's specifically refer to the lyrics and how they are explained in wiki : "The song is a first-person narrative relating the economic and social distress experienced by the protagonist, a poor white Southerner, during the last year of the American Civil War, when George Stoneman was raiding southwest Virginia. Written by Robbie Robertson, the lyrics were prepared arising from research by Robertson and Levon Helm. That shows the quality and depth of The Band. A fantastic legacy of The Band and a great account of history through music.

Ok i'm going to start with saying in general im not a HUGE personal fan of covers. I do like the fact that they get the songwriters work out to a broader audience so Iappretiate that part of a good cover. Now when I came across this I cringed just because how much individuality and passion and soul Levon Helms blessed this world with. but I decided to give it a shot. i'm impressed what more can I say. This is a great interpretation of this classic ballad THANKS ZBB for this piece of art you have blessed us with and for keeping Levon's dreams alive

This is one of those songs that people should just leave alone... no one sings it as well as Levon and no band has that earthy swagger that THE BAND delivered. Sure, this version sounds alright, but it's lacking soul and passion.
@warpathh8 жыл бұрын
+desideriumincarmen That's a ridiculous comment; I just watched the original Levon version and he has half of the depth, power, soul, and emotion that Zac Brown Band put into this song...
@SoulShines4Music8 жыл бұрын
Mark Johnson II With all due respect, you're nuts. lol You obviously haven't seen Helm perform this song in The Last Waltz because if you had you wouldn't be making such a ridiculous comment. Nobody will ever sing this song better than Levon. I'm a big fan of this cover but I'm sure every single member of the ZBB would agree, Levon Helm was a brilliant artist and The Band's original is the definitive version of this song.
@tbcass8 жыл бұрын
Hey you're both right and both wrong. It's all a matter of opinion. I like both versions and Joan Baez's version as well. All this rigid narrow mindedness about music is just stupid IMO.

Levon Helm can only do this. no one else. If so it's just noise. For some reason it's more believable with Levon singing it.

Ok let's not over do it. They didn't slaughter the song but this is by NO means the best cover of the song. It's not that great at all . It's just all you Zak Brown fans boys want to make this out to be more than it is.
