It's so true. I left my wife of 8 years about 8 months ago. She was overcontrolling and very degrading to me. I had to leave. I had to show myself that I was confident enough to take my one and only life back. Life is hard now. I'm struggling, but it was a struggle I saw coming. Her and I remain very cordial for the kids, but she still insists I just should have stayed. The lyrics of this song hit very close for me, no translation needed. We still try to remain friends in a way, but I can see it in her eyes and she can see it in mine. She's the only person I've truly loved. And now she's not mine anymore. my dad played this song all the time in the truck when i was younger and i would always break into tears at the last verse (along with failingly trying to not let my dad see how much of a crybaby i am). there was just an indescribable pain in “i’m with your ghost again” and even 7 year old me got it - i’ve never had to suffer through tragedies like the ones in the comments, god forbid, but it just goes to show how music can be used to share emotions that are so difficult to express, so much to the point where a tiny girl in her dad’s backseat can feel the same grief. today, this song, and i swear it, is the only song that gets me to cry every time. i could listen to it a hundred times in a row and those piano keys at the end will kill me everytime. it’s not every day we are blessed to hear such a beautifully crafted song in both lyrics and progression.

I was married for 25 years to a man who had the constant battle for needing to volunteer for missions due to his Law Enforcement job (he was an Army Airborne/Ranger/Sniper too, but became a reservist after six years of active duty - once we had kids) and his need/want of being home with me and our children. It took its toll on our marriage. When we separated this song came out and he said it described us perfectly. It’s been 8 years since we divorced, we remain best friends and are very close… every time we hear this song it takes us back to those dark days of realizing our marriage was over.
