The Nikon Z6 Mark III: 2 Reasons It's Not Worth the Upgrade FOR ME

The Z6 III is a camera that everyone's been talking about. But there are reasons I won't get it. The camera is great! But do I need it?

I won't pick this camera. But if I had no camera, then it would be a potential buy. It covers most of my needs, and it is cheap and light. But I hope the R6 MKIII will beat it in specs and price. Anyway, I'll get the R5 MKII, and this one should beat my R5C at least in three points: dynamic range, IBIS, and animal AF.

What made you pick up the R5C?

@magnus547 it was the time when the overheating issues with the R5 were real in 8K-RAW 30, and I wanted the 8K-RAW-LT in 60fps what was only in the R5C.. These two things had been the main reason for me. Later, when the overheating issue had been solved, I liked the possibility to slow down feom 60fps in the best resolution, and so I soled the R5. Also, the RAW-LT is nicer to work with than the RAW from the R5. I also like that with external powerbanks you can work for hours, so I never had battery life problems with the R5C. The only 5 things that I miss on the R5C are: 1) 60fps RAW-LT with autofocus by using only the internal battery, 2) IBIS, 3) Animal AF, 4) better internal battery, 5) internal ND-filters internal ND. And I think 4 of the points will come with the R5 MKII ,and it will have an even better DR than the R5C.

I'm interested by this camera. First because I use Panasonic cameras and lenses a lot, and I don't like how they changed their video engine, nor the fact that they still use the same sensor for their full frame cameras since 2019 and also because they stopped to release Pro lenses since 2020, they seems less and less serious. The Z6III with Proresraw will allow to get excellent rolling shutter, perfect fine details (nothing altered like on the S5II) comparable with blackmagic raw cameras but with good AF and acceptable IBIS. My big question is how good the colors are ? Since the Samsung NX1 and GH6, I struggle to get the colors I want, every other cameras I own like the S5II or G9II are disappointing in this regard.

Colors are difficult to get exactly right to your liking. I purchased a Lumix GH5 years ago, and even though I could get passed the autofocus issue, I couldn't stand the colors off of that camera.

The relevance of this review has been narrowly tailored to describe somebody who 1) has multiple cameras, 2) doesn't mind spending additional time in post trying to match footage, & 3) has specified needs that don't match the abilities of the Z6iii. There's nothing wrong with that as long as the larger audience doesn't forget that the parameters of the reviewer are probably quite different than their own. The question I'm wondering about, is why do you need so many cameras?

Good points. Perspective definitely matters. Thinking about your question basically leads me to answer this way, but the answer may change in the future: None of my cameras really are great at everything I may need, thought he Canon R5 comes close. Each camera is good at certain things. For example - R5 is great for detailed high quality footage for some shoots, though I'm limited with it's 30 minute time limit. Blackmagic cameras are great for their impeccable image quality, though they require a focus puller. My Lumix GH5 is great for a compact 4k beast and controls for video in a small body, but it's low light and auto-focus is terrible. My Samsung cameras produce great footage at very small file sizes, but their bit depth of 8 bit 4:20 doesn't really let you adjust colors in post very much, and it's rolling shutter is bad. I can go on and on, but different shoots prioritize different cameras. But that's all up to the person. You can grab any camera and make something wonderful in any situation, you just gotta work around it.

I bought the Z6III to replace my D500 for shooting college football from the sidelines at night. Why did I buy it? It's lighter, faster 14 FPS in shutter mode, sharper view finder with almost no blackout between frames, absolutely superior auto focus, unlimited buffer, and just a bunch of other stuff. I'll be shooting it in crop mode so all my DX lenses will work perfect. I'll be shooting it with the new 28-400 which equates to 42-600. The only open question is will the processor manage the extra noise from a relatively slow lens.
